Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For words that end in -x, you can't just put an 's' on the end to get the plural. You need to add -es to the end. What would the plural of box be?

Answer: boxes

Having a word ending in -x makes it sound like it ends with an 's'. Words that end in -s or -ch sound, like box and witch, get the -es ending to make them into their plural forms of boxes and witches.
2. If you have a word ending in -y, and the letter before that is a vowel, you simply add an 's' to the end. So, what would the plural of monkey be?

Answer: monkeys

There aren't any changes to letters needed when there is a vowel before the ending 'y', so it's as simple as putting an 's' on the end. Donkey becomes donkeys, bay becomes bays, and toy becomes toys.
3. There are a few animals which don't have any changes or additions at all when finding their plural, like deer and fish. Is sheep the plural of sheep?

Answer: Yes

Sheeps doesn't make any sense! Of course it's just sheep. Some other animals that are like this include salmon and moose.
4. If a word ends in -um, then sometimes it can be made into a plural by simply replacing the -um with -a. What would the plural of medium be in this situation?

Answer: media

Other words which follow this rule include bacterium/bacteria, spectrum/spectra, and forum/fora (although this plural isn't used often). Some words that end in -on also change to -a when they become a plural, like phenomenon/phenomena.
5. If a word ends with 'y', and there is a consonant before the 'y', then the 'y' is changed to an 'i' and -es is added on for the plural. So now that you know, which of these is not correct?

Answer: lady / ladys

Remember from a previous question that you only add an 's' to the end if there is a vowel before the ending 'y'. Keep an eye out for those vowels or consonants, and make sure you change to the right plural!
6. Let's look at the word fungus. If we want to make it a plural, we change the -us to -i, giving us fungi. Now, what would the plural of cactus be, if we followed this rule?

Answer: cacti

Some words ending in -us change to -i for the plural, like radius/radii, focus/foci, and alumnus/alumni. However, some words don't follow this rule, like octopus/octopuses and platypus/platypuses. It always helps to ask someone else if you don't know which to use.
7. Some words that end in -f or -fe can change to end in -ves when we look for the plural. Take knife, for instance. It ends in -fe, so we take that off and replace it with -ves, to get knives. What would the plural of leaf be?

Answer: leaves

Other words like this include calf/calves, life/lives, and elf/elves. Sometimes, though, there are words that don't follow this rule, and it can be a bit confusing when you don't know, like roof, which becomes roofs.
8. Now that you know the basics, it's time to let you work some plurals out by yourself. What is the plural of gallery?

Answer: galleries

Because there is a consonant before the 'y', we change the 'y' to an 'i' and add -es. Keep in mind that using 's doesn't change it to the plural; it only refers to something about the object (for example, the gallery's entrance).
9. What is the plural of boy?

Answer: boys

The 'o' before the 'y' means we just have to put an 's' on the end to make the plural.
10. What is the plural of millennium?

Answer: millennia

Millennium ends in -um, so we replace that with -a, giving us millennia. Some people do use millenniums, but it isn't common and it's more correct to use millennia.
