Jacob and his friends bump into Bella at the beach and that's where Jacob tells her about the stories of the Cullens and what they are. In the book, the beach is called First Beach but in the movie they just call it La Push.

Edward can read people's minds. Bella is the first person whose mind he can't see inside. That is what drew his attention to her in the first place. It drives him crazy, trying to figure her out. That's why he's constantly asking her what she's thinking. By this time Edward and Bella have both realized that they're in love and don't want to live without each other. Bella wants Edward to turn her into a vampire so she can be with him forever. Edward thinks of himself as a monster and doesn't want to turn Bella into a monster too. So at the prom Edward asks Bella if she dreams of becoming a monster.
