In the movie, seven gunmen are hired by the residents of a small village to protect them against Calvera and his bandits who constantly plunder the village. Calvera and the bandits are eventually killed and beaten by the gunmen of which only three of the seven survive the gun battle. Hilario ( Jorge Martinez de Hoyos) and Sotero (Rico Alaniz) are two of the farmers of the village, and Chico is played by Horst Buchholz, one of the seven gunmen. Eli Wallach (1915-2014) was an American film, television and stage actor whose career spanned from 1945-2014.

His last film role was in 2010 at the age of 95 in the movie "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" starring Michael Douglas.

Tom Doniphon, played by John Wayne, admitted to Stoddard (James Stewart) that he actually shot Valance from an alley way across the street and fired at the same time as Stoddard. In the gunfight Stoddard had been shot in the hand by Valance and had trouble retrieving and holding his gun. Marshal Link Appleyard was played by Andy Devine and Dutton Peabody was played by Edmond O'Brien. Gene Pitney recorded the song "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. However, it was written for the movie but never used on the soundtrack because John Ford (director) did not like it.

The actual music in the movie was from a 1938 Henry Fonda movie called "Young Mr. Lincoln".

Spencer Tracy (1900-1967) was an American actor who was nominated nine times for the Academy Award for Best Actor from 1937-1968, winning twice in 1938 and 1939. He was to star in "How the West Was Won" but the scheduling of the filming clashed with his role in the movie "Judgement at Nuremburg"; however, he was able to record the film's narration track. The film follows four generations of a family as they move westwards from the periods 1839-1889.
In the movie James Stewart played Linus Rawlings, John Wayne played Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and Henry Fonda played Jethro Stuart.
