"Driving Miss Daisy" starred Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn. The story takes place over 20 years and commences when Miss Daisy's son hires an Afro-American, Hoke Colburn, as her driver because she can no longer drive. Miss Daisy at first is very resistant, but over time a trusting relationship develops between the pair.

This movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four: Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Writing (Screenplay on Material from Another Medium) and Best Makeup. It won three Golden Globes and one BAFTA. At the time of winning the Oscar for Best Actress, Jessica Tandy was the oldest person to achieve this. She was 81 years old.

"Chariots of Fire" starred Ian Charleston as the devout Scottish Christian, Eric Liddell, and Ben Cross as Jewish Harold Abrahams. It also starred Nigel Havers, Ian Holm and John Gielgud.

Harold Abrahams is a student at Cambridge University where he wins numerous running competitions. He and Scottish Eric Liddell plan to participate in competitive running, much to Eric's devout Christian sister's disapproval. The two men meet and become rivals. They both eventually win a spot on the British Olympic team and both go on to each win a gold medal.

The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won four: Best Picture, Best Writing (Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen), Best Costume Design and Best Music original Score. It also won one Golden Globe and three BAFTA Awards.

The name of the movie was derived from words "bring me my chariot of fire" from a William Blake poem. The poem was adapted into the popular British hymn "Jerusalem". The phrase "Chariot of fire" is from the Bible and appears in 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17.

In the famous scene where men dressed in white run along a beach, they are nearly all golf caddies from St Andrews.

The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won nine, including Best Picture, and Best Director. The movie also won two Golden Globe Awards and three BAFTA Awards.

To get the accent right, Meryl Streep listened to the real Karen Blixen reading from her works. The role of Karen was originally offered to Audrey Hepburn.

"Big" starred Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, and Robert Loggia, among others. A 12-year-old boy wants to go on a carnival ride, but he is too short. He finds an old fortune-telling machine and he makes a wish to be "big". When he wakes up the next morning, he has the body of a 30-year-old man, but is still a 12 year old inside. Then the fun begins.

Director Penny Marshall became the first woman whose movie grossed more than $100 million for "Big". At first Tom Hanks was offered the role, but due to other commitments, he was unable to take it. Robert De Niro turned down the role because the pay was not enough. Hanks then became available, so took the role. Penny Marshall wanted John Travolta for the Hanks role.

"The Elephant Man" starred John Hurt as John Merrick (real name Joseph Merrick), together with Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, and John Gielgud, among others. A doctor finds John Merrick in a freak show in Victorian England and vows to help him, as he is an intelligent and sensitive person. His skull is so deformed that in order to avoid smothering, he has to sleep with his head on his knees. The real Joseph Carey Merrick was born in England in 1862 and died in 1890.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three, Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director. It also won two Golden Globe Awards and three BAFTA Awards.

The make-up for the Elephant Man took seven to eight hours to put on and another two hours to take off. Because of the long hours in the make-up chair and filming, John Hurt worked every other day. The make-up was based on actual casts of Merrick's skull held at London Hospital. Some of his organs had been preserved after his death, but they were destroyed by German air raids in World War II.

This was British Director Ridley Scott's first American film. Dustin Hoffman was originally chosen to play the Harrison Ford roll and some of the other actors also considered were Tommy Lee Jones, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher Walker, among others.

Some of the actors considered for the role of Ferris Bueller were, Michael J Fox, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jnr, Rob Lowe, John Cusack, Tom Cruise and Jim Carey. Many actresses were considered for the role of Jeannie, Ferris' sister, including Linda Blair, Goldie Hawn, Meg Ryan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Melanie Griffiths, Madonna and Jodie Foster.

Ben Kinglet's father's family came from the Indian State of Gujarat, as did Mahatma Gandhi. Ben Kingsley's real name is Krishna Bhanji, and he took his name from Kingsley Hall in London. Gandhi stayed at that hotel in 1931. The funeral sequence had 400,000 extras, most were volunteers but about 94,000 were paid a small fee. All the extras had to wear white. The filming of this sequence took place on 31 January 1981 and was the 33rd anniversary of Gandhi's real funeral. Some of the actors considered for the role of Gandhi were Alec Guinness, Albert Finney, Anthony Hopkins, Dirk Bogarde, Tom Courtney, John Hurt and Peter Finch. After winning the role of Gandhi, Ben Kingsley went to India and tried to live for a time as Gandhi had.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869. He trained in law in London at the Inner Temple. He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, who fired three bullets at point blank range into Gandhi's chest. In India he is known as "The Father of the Nation".
