Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jasmine and Aladdin: "It's all so magical." "Yeah" "It's a shame ________ had to miss this." "Nah, he hates fireworks. He doesn't really like flying either. That is... oh no!" Who missed the carpet ride?

Answer: Abu

This scene in "Aladdin" takes place as Jasmine, Aladdin and Carpet are watching fireworks in China, after their 'magic carpet ride'. Jasmine realizes that 'Prince Ali' is actually the boy from the market who had helped her escape from the guards, and she confirms her suspicions when she gets him to slip and admit the existence of Abu, his monkey.

"Aladdin" was released in 1992 with Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin as Aladdin and Jasmine, along with Robin Williams as Genie. Based on the story from "The Book of One Thousand and One Nights" ("Arabian Nights"), the story of Aladdin was actually added into the collection by its French translator, Antoine Galland, and was not originally part of the book of stories.
2. Briar Rose, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather: "You're already betrothed." "Betrothed?" "Since the day you were born." "To Prince Phillip, dear." "But that's impossible! How could I marry a prince, I'd have to be..." "A princess." "And you are dear!" "Princess Aurora. Tonight, we're taking you back to your father, King ________." What is the name of the King?

Answer: Stefan

The film, of course, is "Sleeping Beauty". Immediately after meeting the mysterious prince (and singing a duet with him), Briar Rose (Aurora) returns to Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, who immediately see that she has fallen in love with someone. They decide that now is the time for her to learn the truth of her situation. Little do they know that the prince that she has fallen in love with is in actuality the very prince to whom she is betrothed!

"Sleeping Beauty" was made in 1959 with Mary Costa as Princess Aurora and Bill Shirley as Prince Phillip. The classic fairytale was first published by Charles Perreault in 1697 under the title "La Belle au bois dormant" ("The Beauty in the sleeping wood"). The Disney version was based upon the Brothers Grimm version entitled "Dornröschen" ("Little Briar Rose").
3. Shenzi, Ed, Banzai and Zazu: "Well, well, well, Banzai. What have we got here?" "I don't know, Shenzi. Uh... what do you think, Ed?" --crazy laughter-- "Yeah, just what I was thinking. A trio of trespassers!" "And quite by accident, let me assure you. A simple navigational error. Eh heh heh..." "Whoa, whoa, wait wait wait... I know you. You're ________'s little stooge." "I, madam, am the king's majordomo." Whose 'stooge' is Zazu?

Answer: Mufasa

This is the scene in "The Lion King" where the hyenas have discovered young Simba and Nala at the elephant graveyard. Zazu, the hornbill assistant to King Mufasa, tries to talk their way out of the predicament, but it takes an intervention by Mufasa himself to save the cubs. Of course, they were only there because Scar had put the idea into Simba's head in the first place.

"The Lion King" came out in 1994 with the voice talents of Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the young Simba, and Matthew Broderick as the adult Simba. Pumbaa and Timon were voiced by Ernie Sabella and Nathan Lane, while Mufasa was played by James Earl Jones and Scar by Jeremy Irons. The three hyenas were played by Whoopi Goldberg (Shenzi), Banzai (Cheech Marin) and Ed (Jim Cummings). The story of redemption and justice in the setting of the African animal kingdom was well orchestrated by directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.
4. Ariel and Sebastian: "O.K. So far, so good. I don't think the king knows. But it will not be easy keeping something like this a secret for long." "He loves me . . . hmmm, he loves me not. . . . He loves me! I knew it!" "Ariel, stop talking crazy." "I gotta see him again - tonight! ________ knows where he lives." "Ariel - please. Will you get your head out of the clouds and back in the water where it belongs?" Who knows where Eric lives?

Answer: Scuttle

After seeing Prince Eric on the ship, a huge storm causes the ship to break apart. Ariel ("The Little Mermaid") saves him from certain death and returns him to land. Afterwards, Ariel is mooning to herself over the experience while Sebastian tries to figure out how to prevent a disaster in the making.

"The Little Mermaid" was released in 1989 with the voices of Christopher Daniel Barnes and Jodi Benson as Eric and Ariel. The story follows the attempt of a love-stricken mermaid to be with the one she loves - at nearly any cost.
5. Shang, Chi Fu, and Mulan: "Yes. My name is ________." "Let me see your conscription notice. Fa Zhou? THE Fa Zhou?" "I didn't know Fa Zhou had a son." "Er, he... doesn't talk about me much." "I can see why. The boy's an absolute lunatic!" "Okay, gentlemen, thanks to your new friend ________, you'll spend tonight picking up every single grain of rice. Tomorrow, the real work begins." What name does Mulan claim for herself?

Answer: Ping

Under the guidance of Mushu, the guardian sent by the family ancestors, the scene takes place as Mulan tries to enter the military camp, representing the Fa Zhou family. Since her father had no male heir, the conscription would have meant that her father would have to serve again. Mushu suggested the name Ping after their conversation inadvertently went through 'Ling,' 'Ah-Chu,' and Mushu.

"Mulan" was a 1998 release with the voices of Lea Salonga (Mulan) and Eddie Murphy (Mushu) featured. The story was based on a traditional Chinese poem that can be traced back to the 5th century. Many variations on the story have been penned over the years, but the original was written by Tzu-Yeh.
6. Mrs. Potts and one of her sons: "Momma. There's a girl in the castle!" "Now, ________, I won't have you making up such wild stories." "But really, momma, I saw her." "Not another word. Into the tub." Who saw Belle?

Answer: Chip

Of course, Chip had a small chip out of the lip of the cup that he was, making the name very appropriate. This scene takes place just as Belle is searching the seemingly empty castle for her father.

"Beauty and the Beast" was released in 1991 and holds the distinction of being the first animated feature-length film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Belle was voiced by Paige O'Hara and the Beast by Robby Benson. Mrs. Potts was voiced by long-time Disney actress Angela Lansbury. The traditional fairytale "Beauty and the Beast" was originally published as "La Belle et la Bęte" by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740.
7. Quasimodo and Esmerelda (speaking of the bells): "Follow me. I'll introduce you." "Never knew there were so many." "That's Little Sophia, and... Jean Marie, Ann Marie, and Louise Marie. Triplets, you know." "And who's this?" "Big ________. --Esmerelda hollers "Hello!" which echoes richly.-- "She likes you. Would you like to see more?" What is the name of the last bell?

Answer: Marie

In the above scene, Esmerelda has just been relegated to imprisonment within the Notre Dame Cathedral, where she ran for sanctuary from Minister Frollo and the city guards.

Based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was released in 1996. It featured the voice talents of Tom Hulce as Quasimodo and Demi Moore as Esmerelda. Kevin Kline voiced the soldier Phoebus, and Tony Jay played the part of Frollo.
8. Snow White and various dwarfs: "She's wakin' up." "What do we do?" "Hide!" "Oh dear! I wonder if the children are... oh! Why-- why, you're little men. How do you do? ... I said, how do you do?" "How do ya do what?" "Oh, you can talk. I'm so glad. Now, don't tell me who you are. Let me guess. I know, you're Doc." "Why-- why-- why, yes! Yes! That's true." "And you're-- you're ________." "Oh, gosh!" Which dwarf spoke last?

Answer: Bashful

This is, of course, the scene where the seven dwarfs return home from their day at the mines to discover young Snow White sleeping in their bedroom. Is there any other dwarf that would respond with, "Oh, gosh!"?

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" came out in 1937; the first animated feature film in the history of film. The story was another collected by the Brothers Grimm, and the origins of any potential original are steeped in confusion and mystery, with multiple possible origin stories scattered throughout Europe. The first instance where the seven dwarfs were named was in a 1912 Broadway play, but the names were changed for the Disney film version.
9. Pocahontas and Powhatan: "Father, for many nights now I've been having a very strange dream. I think it's telling me something's about to happen, something exciting." "Yes, something exciting is about to happen." "Really, what is it?" "________ has asked to seek your hand in marriage." "Marry ________?" "I told him it would make my heart soar." "But he's so... serious." Who must Pocahontas marry?

Answer: Kocoum

This scene takes place near the beginning of the film before the sails of the English fleet are seen on the horizon.

The historical account of Pocahontas was made in 1995, featuring the voice talents of Mel Gibson (John Smith) and Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), along with David Ogden Stiers as Governor Ratcliffe. "Pocahontas" was the first film by Disney to be based on an actual historical figure, and while the film was successful in theatres and spawned a direct-to-video sequel in 1998, it also received criticism from Chief Roy Crazy Horse, leader of the Powhatan Renape Nation, for being historically inaccurate and offensive.
10. Mr. Potato Head and Hamm: "Hey, Hamm! Look! I'm ________!" "I don't get it." "You uncultured swine!" Who is Mr. Potato Head impersonating?

Answer: Picasso

This scene is at the very beginning of the movie, after Andy has taken his little sister Molly out of the room and all the toys come alive for the very first time (that we see).

"Toy Story" was a 1995 release movie, combining the digital animation of Pixar with the creative (and monetary) power of Disney. With the voice talents of Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), among others, the successful film has spawned more than one sequel to make for a successful film franchise. The story follows the conflict between a well-loved cowboy toy (Woody) and the new fancy space toy (Buzz) that owner Andy receives for his birthday.
