4. "Schindler's List"(1993), a movie that depicted the brutality of WWII was 195 minutes long. Which of the following options about the movie is true? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. "The Last Emperor" (1987) was 160 minutes in length (but felt a lot longer) was set in the 1950s about the last emperor of China who was a political prisoner of the Soviets and who was sent back to China. The film was a series of flashbacks essentially about the last emperor to reign in China, from his upbringing in the Forbidden Palace, to being a political prisoner in the Palace, his exile to Japan, his imprisonment in Russia, and finally back to China as a gardening peasant. What was the last emperor's name? Hint

Question 6 of 10

Question 7 of 10
7. "The Green Mile" is 188 minutes long and is a movie that requires an intermission but it would be difficult to place one as you are intensely involved in the story the whole time. Which movie co-starred Olga Kurylenko? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Giant"(1956) was a giant of a movie, over 200 minutes long, starring Rock Hudson and James Dean. Who played the female lead character?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

"Giant"(1956) was an American family drama set in Texas starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. It received an Academy Award for Best Director. Rock Hudson and James Dean were nominated for Best Actor (but Elizabeth Taylor did not receive a nomination for Best Actress).

The American Film Institute 100 movies in 100 years voted the movie at number 82 in 1998. "East of Eden" (111 minutes) and "Rebel Without a Cause"(115 minutes)(both 1955), were James Dean's other starring roles. No doubt there would have been others if Dean has not died from a car crash in 1955 when he was 24.
2. At 320 minutes (theatre release), the movie "Cleopatra" (1963) certainly warranted an intermission and really gives the saying of "Epic Theatre" validity. The movie has been known for the affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, of 70 lavish sets and amazing 26,000 costumes. The blown out budget nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox, who had to close for six months, and lay off 2,000 workers. Which actor had third billing, playing Julius Caesar?

Answer: Rex Harrison

"Cleopatra" had many incidents in filming, Elizabeth Taylor, nearly died from pneumonia and required a tracheotomy to save her life. The movie had to be moved from England to Italy, as the weather was better for Elizabeth's health. Despite being overshadowed by the principal stars, Rex Harrison was the only one of the triumvirate who received universally positive reviews and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
"Cleopatra" is truly an epic film of ancient Egypt and Rome. The film starts with Cleopatra and Julius Caesar's lives, both in Rome and Egypt, wars, winnings and losing, power struggles, treachery, wealth and love. After the death of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra becomes involved with Marc Antony, again with battles, loves and intrigue. The finale of the film is when Antony believing Cleopatra is dead, falls on his sword, and dies in her arms. Cleopatra kills herself with an asp.
The 320 minute movie was originally going to be two movies, "Caesar and Cleopatra" and "Antony and Cleopatra".
3. 'Dr Zhivago' was a 1965 movie, starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. It is essentially a love story, set in Russia, but which turbulent period of Russian history serves as the backdrop?

Answer: WWI and Russian Revolution

Dr Yuri Zhivago and nurse Larissa (Lara) Antipova meet just before the Russian Revolution of 1917 at an army hospital. Despite both being married, they fall in love; however they are separated at the end of the war. Years later, their paths cross again. Lara's husband has been killed and Yuri left his wife to be with her. Yuri is thrown back into war, and his family is deported.

He meets up with Lara, yet again. However, Lara is accused of being a spy and has to go into hiding. In the final part of the story, Yuri sees Lara in Moscow, but has a fatal heart attack before he can say a final goodbye.

This movie ran for 3 hours 17 minutes.
4. "Schindler's List"(1993), a movie that depicted the brutality of WWII was 195 minutes long. It needed an intermission, not so much for its length but to give the audience a break from the horror it depicted, remembering that this was a true story. Which of the following options about the movie is true?

Answer: The movie was shot in black and white save for one symbolic gesture made in colour.

"Schindler's List"(1993) starred Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler and Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth. It is based on a book by Australian Thomas Keneally called "Schindler's Ark"(1982). The movie was shot on location in Kraków, Poland but Auschwitz was not allowed to be used so a set was assembled in a nearby quarry.

The movie was shot in black and white except for one little girl who was seen in a red coat. In the movie when Schindler saw the little girl again in a pile of corpses on a cart, he was changed forever.

In an interview in 2005, Spielberg explained the girl's coat represented a bloodstain as all of Germany's opponents knew about the holocaust but no-one did anything to stop it.

Answer: Pu Yi

The film was very controversial by bringing the communist and imperial political ideology to the forefront. From a cinematic point of view, it gave those who had never been to China a great view and insight of the Forbidden Palace, with its extravagance, culture and intrigue.

The film covered a wide ambit of Pu Yi's life through the use of remembrance and dreams. It covered a lot of political matters including Taiwan, Japan and Russia's involvement in the internal events of China. The film concluded with the matter of fact statements of a tour guide saying Pu Yi died in 1967.
6. "The Sound of Music" (1965) at 174 minutes actually had an intermission built into the film. The story is based on a true life WWII Austrian Naval Captain, von Trapp, and his unwillingness to be involved with the Nazi invasion. Maria is a nun from the local convent who is sent to be the governess of the von Trapp children, seven of them, and a love story evolves. Maria and the Captain return from their honeymoon to find that the von Trapp Family Singers are performing at the Salzburg Festival. What song do they perform prior to their escape?

Answer: So Long, Farewell

On returning from their honeymoon Maria and Captain von Trapp understand the Nazi takeover of Austria. As their children were already entered into the Salzburg Festival, Maria and the Captain join them on stage. The idea of the Nazis was that as soon as the festival was over the Captain would go to Germany to undertake specific orders. Through the performance of "So Long, Farewell" where each of the members leave separately they trick the Nazis of their leaving and they go immediately to the convent and hide in the cemetery.

The nuns assist in their escape and the family actually trek over the Alps to freedom. Incidentally, if you watched the movie on television like the author, you do not realise there is an intermission but there were too many breaks for ads.
7. "The Green Mile" is 188 minutes long and is a movie that requires an intermission but it would be difficult to place one as you are intensely involved in the story the whole time. The movie starts at the end and then goes back to the start; a winning formula that works with this film. Paul is old and tells the story of how he achieved being that age because of an event that happened in prison in 1935 with John Coffey. Other than Paul and Mr Jingles who does Coffey help?

Answer: Warden Hal Moore's wife

This is a haunting story of how a giant man can be considered scary to others around him because of the unknown. Coffey is a gentle giant that is not quite in sync with the world around him, and because of this, is on death row for murder. Through the movie Coffey shows his healing powers, firstly by curing Paul's urinary tract infection. Mr Jingles, the beloved mouse of Eduard Delacroix is brought back to life, and he helps with Warden Moore's wife's (played by Patricia Clarkson) brain tumour. The movie also depicts the horror of unscrupulous wardens and their cruelty, especially vivid in the execution of Delacroix.

The film ends with Paul (now 108 years old) and Mr Jingles still alive.
8. The local Movie House decides to run a "James Bond" Triple. It decides to play the first three Daniel Craig movies. As none of the first 23 Eon Bond films exceed 150 minutes,(but some seem much longer), it is decided to have an intermission after each of the first two movies which is reasonable for a movie marathon that will last just over six and one half hours. Which movie co-starred Olga Kurylenko?

Answer: Quantum of Solace

"Quantum of Solace", the second Daniel Craig movie was the shortest of the first 23 movies at 107 minutes. It was book-ended by the first and third Craig movies, "Casino Royale"(2006) and "Skyfall"(2012) at 144 and 143 minutes respectively. It is either amusing or bemusing that the longest movie is based on the shortest corresponding novel.

While Olga Kurylenko had co-starred in several movies prior to this one, this was her breakthrough role. She later starred with Tom Cruise in "Oblivion"(2013). Incidentally if you wanted to play all 23 "James Bond movies", end to end WITHOUT a single intermission it would take two days and 95 minutes to watch them all.
9. When James Cameron was directing, he wasn't known for his brevity. Most Cameron movies were well over two hours long. Which one of the following was *not* a James Cameron directed movie?

Answer: Alien

In descending order, we have "Titanic"(1997) at 194 minutes, "Aliens"(1986) and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day"(1991) both at 137 minutes. "Alien"(1979) was directed by Ridley Scott and was a mere 117 minutes long.
Whilst all the Cameron movies were long, one would think that any intermission would have spoiled the continuity of three (four if you count "Alien") very entertaining movies.
10. Speaking of "Terminator" movies, both "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" (1991) and "The Godfather Part II"(1974) were two of only a handful of movies where the sequel was considered superior to the original movie. Both were also longer than each original respective movie. Did both movies win Academy Awards for Best Actor?

Answer: No

In fact neither movie starred an actor who won a Best Actor Oscar. Al Pacino was nominated but did not win. "The Godfather Part II" was nominated for 11 Oscars winning six (including Best Movie, Best Director). "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" was nominated for six Oscars and received four (all for technical aspects). "The Godfather" (1972) was 175 minutes long; its sequel was an even 200 minutes. "The Terminator" (1983) was 107 minutes long; its sequel was 137 minutes long. If you wanted to watch "The Godfather" trilogy end to end without a bathroom break, you would need to watch continuously for an excruciating nine hours, 45 minutes. If you wanted to watch the first three "Terminator" movies you need a more modest five hours 43 minutes.
