Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start out with my favorite Bette Davis movie. In 1944, Bette Davis portrayed the gorgeous Fanny Trellis Skeffington in what movie?

Answer: Mr. Skeffington

This was a great movie about the prettiest and vainest woman in New York City (Fanny) who married Mr. Skeffington only for his money. She continued to encourage suitors through her marriage and only learned to appreciate her husband after she lost her beauty.

This movie also starred Claude Rains as Job Skeffington, a great actor who also appeared in another classic movie, "Casablanca"(1942). This movie was nominated for two Oscars, but unfortunately didn't win them.
2. In this movie Bette Davis played a spinster named Charlotte Vale. What 1942 film was this?

Answer: Now, Voyager

This movie also had Claude Rains and included Gladys Cooper and Paul Henreid. It was nominated for three Oscars but won only one of them. This movie was about a dull woman (Davis) who got turned into an elegant lady and fell in love with an already married man. She later befriended his daughter and gained her love's affection.
3. In what 1940 film did Bette Davis star as the sly Leslie Crosbie?

Answer: The Letter

This movie had a very interesting and suspenseful plot. It was about a woman (Leslie Crosbie) who murdered a man while her husband was away. The man's widow had a letter that Leslie wrote and charged a high price to get the letter back. This movie was nominated for seven Oscars! It's hard to imagine that it didn't win any, but it must have up against some tough opponents.

This movie also starred James Stephenson, Herbert Marshall, and Gale Sondergaard. Gale Sondergaard was also in my favorite Shirley Temple movie, "The Blue Bird" (1940).
4. This 1943 film starred Bette Davis as Sara Muller. Name the movie.

Answer: Watch on the Rhine

"Watch on the Rhine" also starred Paul Lukas and Lucille Watson. It was about a woman and her family returning from Europe to America after a great number of years. This movie was very well done and nominated for four Oscars. It won one Oscar for Best Actor (Paul Lukas).
5. In 1950, Bette Davis played Margo Channing in possibly the greatest movie of her career. What movie was it?

Answer: All About Eve

A Bette Davis quiz is not complete without "All About Eve", the greatest film of 1950. This magnificent movie won six Oscars, fourteen awards, and was nominated for fourteen more. It was about an aging movie star who met her greatest fan. Only, Margo's fan, Eve, seemed to be studying Margo. Soon, Eve wove her way into the Margo's career and she started stealing her fame.

There was an awesome cast consisting of Anne Baxter as Eve, George Sanders as Addison, and Celeste Holm as Karen. Another great movie came out the same year, "Sunset Boulevard". That movie won many Oscars as well, but lost a lot of awards to "All About Eve".
6. What film starred Bette Davis as Apple Annie?

Answer: A Pocketful of Miracles

This was another awesome movie that also starred Glenn Ford and Hope Lange (who was a supporting role in "Peyton Place"). This movie was nominated for three Oscars! It also won a Golden Globe and a second place Golden Laurel award. The film was mainly about a beggar who gave her apples to a man who believed them to be good luck, and the two became friends.

When Annie's daughter came to visit, Annie had to convince her that she was a member of high society.
7. In 1938, Bette Davis portrayed the saucy Julie Marsden in what movie?

Answer: Jezebel

This wonderful movie won two Oscars and a Special Recommendation award. It was also nominated for four more awards. The movie was about Jezebel, a pretty and carefree woman who completely controlled her fiance. He eventually stopped loving her, and she tried to win him back.

This movie had a great cast including Henry Fonda and George Brent. Henry Fonda would later make the film "Yours, Mine, and Ours", (1968) another one of my favorites that also starred Lucille Ball.
8. Judith Traherne was portrayed by Bette Davis in this sad film. What movie is it?

Answer: Dark Victory

Out of all of Bette Davis' films, this movie had one of my favorite casts. It included Humphrey Bogart who was famous for "Casablanca" (1942) and "The Maltese Falcon" (1941). It also included Geraldine Fitzgerald who also appeared in "Watch on the Rhine." But to top it off, it had the wonderful Ronald Reagan, who later became the fortieth president of the United States! This movie also had a good plot.

It was about a woman diagosed with a brain tumor and who ended up marrying the doctor. Judith (Davis) later learned she was about to die and went into a depression before she learned to live the rest of her life to the fullest.

It was nominated for three Oscars, winning none.
9. The characters in this 1946 film faced double the trouble with Bette Davis taking on both Kate and Patricia Bosworth. Name the movie.

Answer: A Stolen Life

This unforgettable movie was about twin sisters, one evil and one kind (Patricia was the evil one). They both fell in love with the same man and Patricia ended up marrying him. She later drowned and Kate, the good sister got her happy ending after all. This movie also starred Glenn Ford and Dane Clark.
10. Now for one of Bette Davis' last films. She played the evil Letha in what 1978 movie?

Answer: Return From Witch Mountain

Even though it wasn't one of Bette Davis' best films, I decided this film still deserved at least some recognition. It was about twins Tia and Tony who had supernatural powers, only to get them controlled by an evil scientist and his partner. This movie also starred Christopher Lee (or Count Dooku from "Star Wars") and Jack Soo.

The original of this movie "Escape To Witch Mountain" (1975) included another one of my favorite actors, Eddie Albert who was the star of the show "Green Acres" (1965-1971).
