Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which movie did Bette 'author'ize?

Answer: Old Acquaintance

Davis played author Katherine "Kit" Marlowe who had a life long rivalry with best friend, Mildred Drake, played by Miriam Hopkins. The scene-stealing in this Vincent Sherman directed movie is over the top and worth a look if you can find it. The story was remade in the early eighties as "Rich and Famous" , co-starred Candace Bergen and Jacqueline Bisset, and was the last film directed by the great George Cukor.
2. What film had Bette 'eulogized'?

Answer: Dark Victory

'Dark Victory' starred Bette Davis as society girl Judith Traherne battling an inoperable brain tumor. She gets one of the most dramatic and beautiful "dying" scenes on film.
Joan Crawford dies in 'Baby Jane', Gladys George dies in 'Now Voyager', and no one dies in 'Pocketful of Miracles'.
3. In what film did Bette 'social'ize?

Answer: Mr. Skeffington

Bette Davis played 'social butterfly', Fanny Trellis Skeffington, in 'Mr. Skeffington'. Over the twenty-six year span of the film she makes dates with fellow 'society girl' Janie Clarkson (unseen throughout the movie) only to cancel every time.

In 'The Old Maid' she plays a spinster, in 'Madame Sin' a female 'Dr. No', and Queen Elizabeth I in 'The Virgin Queen'.
4. What film saw Bette Davis 'villain'ize practically the entire cast?

Answer: In This Our Life

'In This Our Life' has Bette at her most selfish and wicked in the role of Stanley Timberlake. The John Huston directed film features Bette's character dumping her boyfriend, stealing her sister's fiancee, eloping with him, driving him to suicide, stealing back her old boyfriend from her sister, killing a little girl in a drunken hit and run, blaming and framing an innocent young man, and carrying on 'inappropriately' with her favorite uncle.

The other three films do not feature Bette Davis as a villain.
5. What film saw Bette 'drama'tize?

Answer: All About Eve

Bette as the great dramatic actress Margo Channing. All the other films are comedies.
6. What movie saw Bette Davis in 'disguise'?

Answer: All three films.

All three films starred Bette Davis disguised as someone else. 'A Stolen Life' and 'Dead Ringer' both feature her as a twin who upon the death of the other twin takes on her sister's identity. In 'A Pocketful Of Miracles' she pretends to be Mrs. E. Worthington Manville when in reality she is street peddler Apple Annie.
7. Bette is "hospitalized" in which film?

Answer: Phone Call From A Stranger

Bette in the only scene in her long film career history that is played while she lies in an iron lung.
8. In which movie did Bette 'burglarize'?

Answer: Bunny O'Hare

Bette and Ernest Borgnine play motorcycle riding bank robbers.

She is a murderess in 'The Letter', an adultress in 'Beyond The Forest', and a teacher in 'The Corn Is Green'.
9. What film saw Bette Davis 'royalized'?

Answer: All of these

Bette played the Mad Empress Carlotta in 'Juarez', Queen Elizabeth I of England in 'The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex',
and as Catherine The Great in 'John Paul Jones'.
10. What film saw Bette 'scandalize' proper society?

Answer: Jezebel

I think 'Jezebel' is one of Bette Davis' greatest performances in a long career of great performances. The scene where Henry Fonda forces her to follow through and dance in her flaming red dress at the ball is one of the greatest screen moments of all time.
