Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Western did Arnold Schwarzenegger play a handsome stranger who protected a charming woman from getting robbed?

Answer: The Villain

Before playing Mr. Freeze in "Batman and Robin", Arnold Schwarzenegger played a classic Western good guy in "The Villain". Charming Jones (Ann-Margret) was being protected by Handsome Stranger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) while Cactus Jack (Kirk Douglas) attempted to rob her, wearing disguises and setting traps at various places. Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger has starred in many famous movies over the years, including "Conan the Barbarian", "Terminator", and "Commando".
2. Which movie told the true story about multimillionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt trying to take over Nicaragua in the 1880s?

Answer: Walker

Ed Harris played as William Walker, who tried to help Vanderbilt take over Nicaragua in the 1800s in "Walker" (1987). Starting out as a normal Western involving a hired army trying to grab land, the movie became more odd as it progressed. Filmed during the real life Contra War, the story involved American multimillionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt (Peter Boyle) hiring Walker to secure rights to overland shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific by taking over the government of Nicaragua.

There seemed to be comparisons between the past and present Nicaragua as anachronisms popped up, including people reading 1980s magazines, helicopters, lighters, automatic rifles, a car passing a horse carriage, etc. Of course, Ed Harris has appeared in various movies ("Stepmom", "The Right Stuff").

He played as Hank Blaine in "Creepshow".
3. In which movie did Leslie Nielsen play Col. Bedford?

Answer: The Sheepman

Leslie Nielsen played Colonel Steven Bedford, local cattle baron, in "The Sheepman". He didn't like it when gambler Jason Sweet (Glenn Ford) won a herd of sheep in a poker game and took them to cattle country. Bedford's fiancée, Dell Payton (Shirley MacLaine) became attracted to Jason, which caused more trouble between the sheepman and the cattlemen. Of course, Leslie Nielsen appeared in many different kinds of movies over the years, including "Forbidden Planet", "The Reluctant Astronaut", and "Airplane".

He played Lt. Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun".
4. Which movie involved Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Bat Masterson, and others helping the bad guys start a war between Native Americans and settlers?

Answer: The Outlaws Is Coming

Kenneth Cabot (Adam West), a newspaper editor, left Boston to go out West and find out why so many buffalo were getting killed. It was because Rance Roden (Don Lamond) wanted the American Indians to get angry so they would kill the settlers and Rance could take over the land.

He also sold weapons to Chief Crazy Horse. Rance hired just about every famous Western character to drive Cabot out of town, including Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Bat Masterson, etc. However, Annie Oakley (Nancy Kovack) liked Cabot and helped him. Also helping Cabot were, believe it or not, the Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Joe DeRita). Adam West is famous for playing the title role of "Batman" in the TV series of the 1960s.

He has appeared in movies, including "One Dark Night" (1983), and "Hooper" (1978), TV shows ("The Drew Carey Show"), and his voice was used in "Family Guy", "The Critic", and the voice of Batman in many cartoon series.
5. In which movie did a man escape hanging by getting married?

Answer: Goin' South

Henry Moon (Jack Nicholson) was escaping a posse into Mexico. He crossed the river and jumped around shouting they couldn't get him now. The posse ignored the river which bordered the U.S. and Mexico and grabbed him anyway. He was brought to town and prepared for hanging, until Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen) said she would marry him.

There was a local law that said if a local woman married a criminal, he wouldn't be executed. (This sounds insane.) She needed a man to help her in the mine. Of course, Jack Nicholson played Jack Torrence in "The Shining" (1980) and the Joker in "Batman" (1989).

He appeared in many movies, including "Easy Rider", "Chinatown", and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
6. In which movie did Don Knotts play a dentist who fought criminals?

Answer: The Shakiest Gun in the West

Jesse Haywood (Don Knotts) graduated from dental school in Philadelphia in 1870 and decided to become a frontier dentist. Meanwhile, Penelope Cushing (Barbara Rhoades) was arrested for robbing a stage and offered a pardon if she got evidence against Rev. Gant (Don Barry) who used his church to smuggle guns to the American Indians. To join the wagon train she had to be married, so she married Haywood. Along the way they were attacked by American Indians who were shot by Penelope, but everyone thought Haywood did it, including Haywood.

He became famous as "Doc Haywood" and was made the sheriff of the local town where Rev. Gant hired a gunslinger to kill Doc Haywood. Of course, Don Knotts was famous for playing Barney on "The Andy Griffith Show" and Ralph on "Three's Company".

He appeared in various movies, including "The Reluctant Astronaut" and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".
7. In which of these movies did a sheriff throw rocks at a gunslinger and chase him out of town instead of having a shootout?

Answer: Support Your Local Sheriff

Jason McCullough (James Garner), an expert shot, found himself in the gold rush town of Calendar, Colorado. Mayor Olly (Harry Morgan) appointed McCullough sheriff, which McCullough went along with because he needed money to finance his trip to Australia. McCullough arrested Joe Danby (Bruce Dern) for gunning down a man. Pa Danby (Walter Brennan) expected the new sheriff to release his son Joe, but the new sheriff wasn't scared of Danby like everyone else was. Pa Danby hired various gunslingers to kill Sheriff McCullough, but the sheriff outdrew them. One day a gunslinger showed up to challenge the sheriff just before lunch.

The sheriff complained that killing a man before lunch spoiled his appetite, so he threw rocks at the gunslinger and chased him out of town. Of course, James Garner appeared in TV shows ("Maverick", "The Rockford Files") and movies ("The Great Escape", "Victor/Victoria").
8. In which movie did Tim Matheson play an undercover agent investigating supply robberies blamed on Native Americans?

Answer: The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again

Pvt. Jeff Reed (Tim Matheson) was really an undercover government agent investigating supply robberies blamed on American Indians. While at the fort, Amos (Tim Conway) and Theo (Don Knotts), two clumsy recruits, accidentally burned down the fort. Reed rescued Milly Gaskill (Elyssa Davalos) the daughter of the officer in charge of the fort, taking her to his hideout where she helped a blind old woman. Meanwhile, Amos and Theo were sent to a prison. Calling themselves the "Apple Dumpling Gang", they found prisoner Big Mack who lived in a secret area where his gang hid after robbing supply wagons on the way to the fort. Tim Matheson played Eric "Otter" Stratton in "Animal House" and appeared in various TV shows ("Tucker's Witch") and movies ("Fletch").
9. In which movie did Crazy Knife (Henry Silva) capture Wild Bill Hickok?

Answer: The Plainsman

Wild Bill Hickok (Don Murray) was captured by Crazy Knife (Henry Silva) and taken to the Native American Indian tribe. His life was spared by Chief Black Kettle (Simon Oakland) who set Wild Bill free, but without his horse or boots. Eventually, Wild Bill warned the fort that the Cheyenne were armed with repeater rifles and could attack. Later, General Custer (Leslie Nielsen) took over the fort. Simon Oakland played as the psychiatrist, Dr. Richman, in "Psycho" and appeared in various movies and TV shows ("Kolchak: the Night Stalker", "Toma").

Henry Silva (born Sep 15, 1928) made guest appearances in many TV shows and movies, including "Ocean's 11" and "Above the Law".
10. In which movie did Quincy Drew (James Garner) sell his friend into slavery?

Answer: Skin Game

Quincy Drew (James Garner) sold his friend Jason O'Rourke (Louis Gossett Jr.) into slavery, but then he would sneak back and break him out. They would go to another town and do the same thing again. However, one time Plunkett (Ed Asner) recognized Jason as a runaway slave and captured him, selling him to a southern plantation where escape was difficult. Louis Gossett Jr. appeared in TV shows ("Roots", "The Powers of Matthew Star") and movies ("Jaws 3D", "Enemy Mine").
