Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which naval rank does James Bond hold?

Answer: Commander

Bond's rank is referenced throughout the series. We even see him in uniform in 'You Only Live Twice', 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies'.

It would be easy to assume that, in the rebooted Daniel Craig era, this part of his backstory had been dropped as it's not referenced overtly. However, those of you with a keen eye may have spotted that in 'Skyfall', he is indeed referred to as Commander James Bond in the obituary M is reading after his presumed death.
2. What were the names of James' parents?

Answer: Andrew and Monique

In 'Skyfall', Silva passes a gravestone on his way to the chapel on the Skyfall estate. It reads, 'In memory of Andrew Bond and Monique Delacroix Bond'. James' father's hunting rifle which he uses in the defence of Skyfall is also initialed AB.

Their identity is faithful to the novels - despite being so often identified as quintessentially English, Bond's parents were, in fact, Scottish and Swiss! Although we don't learn a great deal about them in the films compared to the books, their deaths in a climbing accident are referenced in both 'Goldeneye' and 'Spectre'.

The hardcore fans out there may have noticed something about the wrong answers I provided for Bond's mother (Holly, Andrea, Stacey) ...they're all Bond girls.
3. What was Bond's weapon of choice when the series first began with 'Dr. No?'

Answer: Beretta 418

At the start of 'Dr. No', James Bond's preferred firearm was the Beretta. However, due to it jamming on a mission and Bond ending up in the hospital as a result, he is ordered by M to carry what would become his signature weapon for most of the series: the Walther PPK.

Bond wielded a 44 Magnum in 'Live and Let Die' and switched from the Walther PPK to the Walther P99 in 'Tomorrow never Dies'.
4. In which of these films do we NOT see inside Bond's apartment?

Answer: The Man with the Golden Gun

We don't get to see much of Bond's home life but we do get to see three different versions of his bachelor pad throughout the series in 'Dr. No', 'Live and Let Die' and 'Spectre'.

My favourite of these glimpses is in 'Live and Let Die' - much to M's chagrin, he has a really loud coffee maker.
5. He's fluent in many languages but which of the below courses does James Bond claim to have taken a first in at university?

Answer: Oriental Languages

In 'You Only Live Twice', Moneypenny throws James an 'Instant Japanese' book for his trip to Japan, which he tosses back, wryly remarking that he took a first in Oriental Languages at Cambridge.

Oddly enough, in 'Tomorrow Never Dies' he is stumped when faced with a Chinese keyboard, which leads us to debate just how much of that course sank in!
6. James Bond has had many a love interest but only married once. Who was the doomed bride?

Answer: Tracy Di Vicenzo

Poor Tracy - murdered by Blofeld shortly after the wedding, she is the only Bond girl to have officially tied the knot with James. She remains one of the most memorable though, played by the outstanding Diana Rigg in 1969's 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

Bond did 'marry' Kissy Suzuki in 'You Only Live Twice' as part of his cover but since he's pretending to be a Japanese guy I think we can safely discount that one.
7. Boy, does James Bond like a drink. We all know he loves a Vodka Martini but he's also partial to a glass of bubbly. Which brand of champagne does he prefer?

Answer: Bollinger

I won't bore you with a comprehensive list but James Bond orders Bollinger champagne a LOT.

My favourite occasion has to be in 'The Living Daylights' when he arrives at an MI6 safehouse from Harrods and has purchased a bottle of Bollinger instead of the champagne M sent him to get. He found the brand on the list 'questionable' - oh James!
8. James Bond has few friends. So when one is fed to a shark, he is, unsurprisingly, incensed enough to go after those responsible. Which friend am I talking about?

Answer: Felix Leiter

Not to be confused with the Felix Leiter played by Jeffrey Wright in the rebooted Daniel Craig films, this Leiter was played by David Hedison, the first actor besides Wright to play the character more than once.

In 1989's 'Licence to Kill', Timothy Dalton's Bond goes rogue after druglord Franz Sanchez has Felix's wife killed on their honeymoon and feeds the CIA agent to a shark. Felix survives but this is his last appearance until the reboot, 'Casino Royale', in 2006.
9. James has a fondness for gadgets. In 'Die Another Day' he takes a walk through memory lane in R's underground workshop, where we see many of the gizmos used in previous films. In which other film do we see him take a look through equipment used on previous missions?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

This is also one of the few times we see Bond's office at MI6 headquarters. Reminiscing on previous missions, he pulls out Honey Ryder's knife from 'Dr. No', Red Grant's Garotte watch from 'From Russia With Love' and the breathing apparatus he used in 'Thunderball'.

Obviously, the makers of the film were keen to bridge the gap between the iconic Sean Connery and this young upstart, George Lazenby, by reminding you this is the 007 you know and love.
10. I've already mentioned Bond's wife and her untimely death. In which film's opening is he seen paying his respects to her in a graveyard?

Answer: For Your Eyes Only

Roger Moore's Bond is seen placing flowers at Tracy's grave in the film's opening teaser, just before he has a death defying experience aboard a helicopter. He can't even visit his wife's grave without an assassination attempt - Bond just can't catch a break!
