Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ext., River. Arwen halts her horse and turns back towards the river, raising her hands in a magical gesture. Arwen: "You shall not pass!" Which race of creatures was soon to regret their decision not to heed this warning?

Answer: Nazgûl

After Frodo was wounded at Weathertop, Arwen carried him to Rivendell for healing, pursued by five of the nine Nazgûl. Fording a river, she arrives in her homeland, where she has a powerful connection to nature, causing the waters of the river to rise and sweep away the Nazgûl.

While this powerful magic saves her and Frodo from immediate danger, the Nazgûl survive, losing only their horses. They would later reappear riding flying fell beasts.
2. Ext., Mountain Pass Nine figures make their way through the blizzard. The storm intensifies and, booming through the clouds, we hear the disembodied voice of the wizard Saruman. Saruman: "You shall not pass!" Whose magical powers were insufficient to counteract this prohibition, forcing him and his companions to look for another way?

Answer: Gandalf the Grey

At the pass of Karadhras, the Fellowship of the Ring's progress towards the east was rudely interrupted by Saruman, who hoped that, by denying them passage over the mountain, he could get them to take the detour through his own domain where it would likely have been easy for him to attack them. To his chagrin, the Fellowship did not take that way, but the even more dangerous route through the abandoned Dwarven mines of Moria.
3. Int., Library Saruman's visitor becomes visibly agitated. He turns to leave. With a magical gesture, Saruman slams shut all doors to the room. "You shall not pass!" Who, having come in peace for guidance, found himself involuntarily extending his stay at Orthanc?

Answer: Gandalf the Grey

Having heard of the One Ring's rediscovery, Gandalf traveled to meet the leader of the order of the Istari, Saruman the White. However Saruman had already made an alliance with the Dark Lord and was not intent on letting Gandalf spoil his plans. He engaged him in a magical duel which he won due to his greater power and experience, imprisoning Gandalf at the very top of the tower. Gandalf was ultimately able to escape with the aid of one of the Great Eagles.
4. Ext., Forest The Fellowship of the Ring traverses the dense forest when they are suddenly being stopped by a number of Galadhrim warriors led by Haldir. Haldir: "You shall not pass!" Whose presence in Lothlórien was Haldir most opposed to?

Answer: Gimli

While it is never explained in the movies, the Elves had a long-standing tainted relationship with the Dwarves dating back to the First Age. Haldir, guarding the Lothlórien forest with his troops, objected to Gimli's presence based on this old racial conflict. In the film, he additionally opposed bringing the One Ring into the forest as an evil that should never taint this sacred place.
5. Ext., River Anduin Frodo paddles his boat across the Anduin when he notices another person attempting to pursue him. Frodo: "You shall not pass!" Who, as a result of not heeding this command, almost drowned?

Answer: Samwise Gamgee

After the attack of Boromir on him at Cirith Ungol, Frodo realized that he would not be safe within the Fellowship, surrounded by too many others who could be influenced and corrupted by the vile One Ring. He set out to complete the remainder of his journey alone but did not count on the loyalty of Samwise Gamgee who would rather drown in the river than let Frodo leave without him.
6. Ext., Ruins In the middle of a savage attack, two hobbits argue with a human captain about their next destination. Hobbit (pointing): "It must be brought there". Captain: "No. It must be brought to Gondor. You shall not pass." I am sure you know which hobbit is speaking here, but where shall he not pass, according to the captain?

Answer: Mount Doom

This scene is the encounter in Osgiliath, where Frodo and Samwise, after having been detained at Henneth Annûn, argue with Faramir about their quest to destroy the ring. In order to please his father, Faramir wishes to claim the Ring for Gondor and use it against the enemy.

The savage attack of Sauron's forces and in particular the Nazgûl together with Frodo's reaction however ultimately convince him that this decision would be unwise and only hasten Gondor's defeat. In this portrayal, the makers of the movies departed rather far from Faramir's decision in the books - in the literary equivalent, Faramir already knew about Boromir's failing at Henneth Annûn and let the Hobbits (along with Smeagol) continue on their quest right there.
7. Int., Cave In the midst of a veritable necropolis, a pale green figure rises from the skulls, only to be joined by hundreds more, all ghosts of traitorous warriors. Ghost: "You have entered here, but you shall not pass!" Which three persons have so disturbed the unrest of the spirits?

Answer: Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas

Deep under the Dwimorberg, the Army of the Dead - oathbreakers of an age long past - existed in troubled undeath until they were to fulfill their oath of loyalty to a heir of Isildur. Again departing from the book version, the king of the wraiths is shown as a quite menacing presence in the movies and only through the use of the reforged sword of Isildur can Aragorn prove his claim to the kingship. Of all the scenes in this quiz, this one's true dialog is closest to the quiz title - the real line is "The way is shut".
8. Int., Cave Sticky webs abound in this cave, with the giant spider Shelob waiting for her prey. A juicy hobbit - Frodo - approaches. Shelob: "You ssssshall not passsssss!" Although he succumbed at the end, which item did Frodo use to initially keep Shelob at bay and almost escape her fangs unhurt?

Answer: The Phial of Galadriel

As a creature of darkness, Shelob was repulsed by the powerful, pure light of Galadriel's Phial. Holding the Elven glass up high, Frodo was able to keep Shelob at a distance until he had already passed the worst of the webs, but just before he would have escaped her lair, he stumbled and dropped it, allowing Shelob to attack and paralyze him.
9. Ext., City Two guards stand watch in front of a large pile of wood. A hobbit approaches and wishes to get closer to the pile, but is denied. Guard: "By order of the Steward of Gondor, you shall not pass." Who had to take an alternate, sneaky, route to get to this pile of wood to take an important action against the wishes of the city's ruler?

Answer: Peregrin Took

Steward Denethor refused to call for the aid of Rohan even when the siege and fall of Gondor were imminent. Gandalf, wishing to defend the city even in the face of its ruler's apathy, thus had to find a way to issue this call against Denethor's express wishes.

It was Peregrin Took, the hobbit, who climbed the rock wall to the alarm beacon and lit it, thus triggering the chain of beacons that signaled Edoras that Gondor needed to invoke their ages-old alliance.
10. Ext., Shores The last Elven boat waits to carry Frodo into the West, to live with the Elves in a place where the pain from having carried the ring would be more bearable. Frodo: "You shall not pass - your place is here." Which of Frodo's friends could not join him on the boat, still having a life to live in Middle Earth?

Answer: Samwise Gamgee

Staying true to the novel, the ship that took Frodo to Valinor carried the two ring-bearers Frodo and Bilbo, and the three last bearers of the Elven rings - Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf. In spite of having been a ring-bearer himself, Sam was not chosen to accompany them and remained behind as heir of Frodo's estate, living out his remaining life in the Shire.
