Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays Helen North, the mother?

Answer: Lucille Ball

Although Lucy was 57 when this film came out, she plays a younger woman. Young enough to get pregnant, anyway! There's a great drunk scene which brings back memories of "I Love Lucy".
2. Who played Frank Beardsley, the father?

Answer: Henry Fonda

According to IMDb.com, in a Barbara Walters interview, Jane Fonda said that Henry was deeply in love with Lucille Ball and they were "very close" during the filming of this movie. It shows!
3. How many chidren did Helen and Frank have at the beginning of the movie when they meet?

Answer: Helen had 8 and Frank had 10

After they finally find out how many children each other have, they decide it would be insanity to go out on another date!
4. How does Helen get so drunk when she meets Frank's children?

Answer: The boys each put extra booze in her screwdriver without knowing the others are doing it

This is a classic "Lucy" scene - she has the loud laughter, tears, etc. After a trip to the bathroom to be sick, she comes back marvelously sober and graciously accepts the boys' apologies.
5. When Helen finds out she is pregnant, she decides not to tell anybody. How does Mike find out?

Answer: When he goes for his physical, Helen's doctor lets it slip.

Of course, all's well that ends well, and the baby magically softens Mike's major attitude towards Helen. I personally couldn't figure out whether the baby was a boy or a girl - blue blanket at the hospital, and a pink blanket in the final scene.
6. Where is Frank when he finds out Helen is pregnant?

Answer: On a ship

Frank gets a letter saying she's pregnant, and then a drawing from one of the daughters which shows Helen is huge - he rushes home, only to find out he had a little more time than he thought.
7. Who stars as Mike Beardsley?

Answer: Tim Matthieson

This guy has had an incredible career - over 100 parts in movies and TV shows, from "Animal House" to "Bonanza", and even "West Wing". He currently goes by Tim Matheson, but the above spelling is how he was credited in this movie, his third.
8. This film was based on a true story.

Answer: True

Yes, the movie was based on a book written by Helen Eileen Beardsley, who died on the same day as Lucille Ball. In the movie, only one baby is being shown - in real life, Helen was younger (30s) and had a baby boy and a baby girl with Frank - bringing the grand total to 20 kids!
9. Frank and Helen go shopping for groceries together; about how much do their four carts of groceries add up to?

Answer: A shocking $126

Yes, this was a shocking amount for them. Today, I can spend $126 with half a cart! According to www.dvdverdict.com, The U.S. Navy actually listed their family as a restaurant so they could buy groceries from the commissary at wholesale prices, since the Beardsleys would buy 50 loaves of bread at once.
10. What is the name of the book this movie is based on?

Answer: Who Gets the Drumstick?

"The Beardsley Story" was the working title of the movie while Desilu Productions attempted to get the movie made - they acquired the rights in 1959 but the movie didn't begin production until 1967 for a variety of reasons - one of which was financial problems which required Lucy to go back to TV for a while. "Full House" was another working title, briefly.
