Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent

Answer: Giant Monster Attacks

This was an early movie directed by Roger Corman and starring Abby Dalton who later played the wife in "The Joey Bishop Show" and made appearances on "The Hollywood Squares", "Match Game", and other shows. "The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent" involved a group of Viking women who were living alone after most of the men left them and never returned.

The women got in their boats and went off looking for their men until they were captured by an enemy tribe. Near the end of the movie the great sea serpent attacked.
2. Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Answer: "Fail Safe" Failed

Ripper got depressed and sent airplanes to drop bombs on Russia. Operation Fail Safe, in which American planes maintained a safe distance from Russia while observing Russia and could only attack if the President ordered it, was supposed to prevent this from happening.

However, if the Pentagon and Washington, D.C. were wiped out in a first strike, a general could send a secret code to order his planes to attack Russia without Presidential approval, if the President was dead. Ripper used the provision to send the bombers when the President was still alive.

He didn't know that Russia had a doomsday device which would destroy the surface of the Earth if any bombs hit Russia.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze

Answer: Professor Kidnapped

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze" was based on a cartoon TV series which was based on a series of comic books and toys. This movie had the most in common with the cartoon show than the other movies. This time the turtles (Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael) and the rat (Splinter) found the mutagen ooze which had mutated them. Professor Perry (David Warner) of the Techno Global Research Industries explained things to the turtles after they rescued him from the evil Shredder, who had kidnapped him. Shredder used the mutagen to create his own large mutants (a wolf and snapping turtle) to attack the Ninja Turtles. Rapper Vanilla Ice sang some songs.
4. Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Answer: Women Protesters Arrested

This was another one of those movies in which Abbott and Costello made a mockery of a classic horror story. In this movie the boys were policemen in London at a time when women were arrested for protesting for equal rights and a hairy man sometimes attacked women.

The hairy man was Mr. Hyde who was the respected Dr. Jekyll in disguise. A lot of the movie involved a romance between Vicky and a newspaper man. Vicky's guardian was Jekyll. There was also a lot of slapstick with Tubby (Costello) getting changed into a "Hyde" monster and biting police, who also turned into monsters.
5. The Man With Two Brains

Answer: "Screwtop" Doctor Married

Dr. Hfuhruhurr was a medical genius who invented "screwtop brain surgery". He accidentally hit a woman with his car and operated on her. They got married, but she would not consummate their marriage, claiming that she still had a headache since the operation.

In the meantime the doctor became friends with Dr. Necessiter, who invented a way to keep brains alive in jars. Dr. Hfuhruhurr could hear the thoughts of the brain of Anne Uumellmahaye. They fell in love, which made his wife jealous. She boiled the brain in water until her husband rescued the brain. Dr. Necessiter (David Warner) told Dr. Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) that the brain would soon die unless he transplanted it into someone's body.
6. The Three Stooges Meet Hercules

Answer: Time Machine Invented

The Three Stooges (Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe) became friends with Schuyler, who invented a time machine. The four men and Diane went back in time to ancient Greece. They met King Odius and Hercules. Odius wanted Diane for himself so he sold the four men into slavery.

After several weeks of rowing a large ship, Schuyler built up his muscles so that he was as strong as Hercules. They fought their way back to save Diane from King Odius. They recovered the time machine and went back to the future.
7. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Answer: Heartland In Depression

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978) was a movie featuring Beatles songs sung by people who were not the Beatles. The setting was the mythical town of Heartland where the Future Villain Band stole the magical musical instruments. This caused a depression. Characters were named for people in Beatles songs: Billy Shears, Strawberry Fields, Lucy, Mean Mr. Mustard, Mr. Kite, Maxwell Edison, etc. Strawberry Fields died and was buried, but was later resurrected by Sgt. Pepper. Most of the songs came from the 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and the 1969 album "Abbey Road".

Some of the songs were already sung by the Beatles in the movie "Yellow Submarine".
8. Escape From the Planet of the Apes

Answer: Taylor's Spaceship Recovered

The novel "Planet of the Apes" involved talking chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans which took over the universe. In this movie the chimpanzees from the future were the size of people. The future Earth was said to have been destroyed in the previous movie, "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".

In "Escape From the Planet of the Apes" the apes in Taylor's spaceship were said to have been accidentally sent to the United States in the 1970s because of an explosion. The three clothed chimpanzees were taken to a zoo where one of them was choked to death by a gorilla.

The husband and wife chimpanzees became celebrities when they spoke in front of a commission, but Hasslein wanted to kill them when it was discovered the female chimpanzee was pregnant.

The Hasslein Curve, theorized by Dr. Otto Hasslein, was mentioned to explain how the astronauts traveled ahead in time in the first two movies and back in time in the third movie.
9. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Answer: Project Genesis Tested

This was the second big screen movie based on the TV series "Star Trek". In fact, it was a follow up to an episode ("Space Seed") of the series involving a violent genetically enhanced man, Khan, who wanted to take over the Starship Enterprise. Kirk had placed him on an alien planet with his people.

However, in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" it was discovered that the planet had shifted orbit which made the weather rough. When Chekov found Khan, Khan went to the Starship Reliant and took it over.

After Admiral Kirk and the Enterprise got involved, Khan got his hands on the Genesis Device, which could destroy all life on a planet while replacing the matrix with new life.
10. Abbott and Costello Go to Mars

Answer: Venus Explored

Abbott and Costello accidentally took off in a rocket ship which landed in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. They thought the people in strange costumes were aliens on another planet. Two escaped prisoners forced them to fly away into outer space. They had been on the way to Mars when a switch was flipped.

They instead landed on Venus, in spite of the movie being called "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars". They found beautiful women (real life beauty contestants) on Venus, but they found out the women had previously gotten rid of all the men on the planet hundreds of years ago.
