Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're looking for a weather forecast and turn on the radio. It's station ABBA where the weatherman, Benny Bjorn, tells you that, today, there is a 100% chance of rain. In fact, he enters into a little reminiscence, remembering another day when he's pretty sure it must have rained. Yes, he says, he must have heard the sound of rain rattling off the roof. Which day does he think this was?

Answer: The day before you came

"And turning out the light I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night
And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
The day before you came"

"The Day Before You Came" (1982), written by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus, was the last studio recording made by Swedish group, Abba. It had the working title of "Den Lidande Fågeln (The Suffering Bird)" and postdates their final studio album release which was 1981's "The Visitors". As a single, it fared poorly (in comparison with most of the rest of Abba's catalogue) only reaching Number 32 in the UK and not entering the Billboard Hot 100. Its reputation has, however, grown with the years, certainly amongst Abba fans.
2. You switch channels trying to find a more optimistic assessment of the weather. Here's Claude Berger from radio station HAIR. He reaffirms that there is, indeed, a 100% chance of rain but suggests that, until it comes, you let the sunshine in. He adds that his age is the age of his horoscope sign, which is what?

Answer: Aquarius

"Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" is taken from the musical "Hair". Claude and Berger are two of the musical's main characters.

The song, sung by the 5th Dimension, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969 and reached Number 11 in the UK. It won a Grammy in 1970.
3. Still not satisfied, you change channels again. Here's weatherman Bob Dylan from the BAND radio station. Rain is definitely gonna fall and it's a-gonna be which of the following?

Answer: Hard

"A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" was recorded in 1962 and appears on the album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". Although claimed by some to have been written in response to the Cuban Missile crisis, its composition actually pre-dates the crisis by a few weeks.

For the pernickety among you, Dylan's involvement with the Band wasn't until 1965.
4. If it's going to rain then you need to make provision. You hurry down to the Rihanna department store. There you find something that's been available since 2007. What do you buy?

Answer: An umbrella

"Umbrella" was a massive worldwide hit for Rihanna in 2007. It reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, in the UK and in many other countries. The song included a contribution by Jay-Z and, in 2008, won a Grammy for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration".
5. You stop to talk to the men behind the counter in the shoe section. They're brothers and turn out to be walkers too. They engage you in conversation and are particularly gloomy about the weather prospects. What do they think is going to happen?

Answer: The sun ain't gonna shine anymore.

"The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)" was a hit for the Walkers Brothers in 1966. It reached Number 1 in the UK and Number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. They obviously were gloomy weather forecasters because, the following year, they returned with "Walking in the Rain".

Although known under the names of Scott, Gary and John Walker, the three Walkers aren't actually brothers. They adopted the names because they sounded like they fitted the music business better than their own.
6. By now the clouds are definitely gathering outside. Across from the counter you see a man with a young woman. You can't quite catch his name but it sounds like Tim Tatience. He's telling his companion that, with her, he's "got sunshine on a cloudy day". From this you conclude that she must be his what?

Answer: Girl

"I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May.
Well, I guess you'll say, what can make me feel this way?
My girl. Talkin' 'bout my girl."

"My Girl" was a 1965 hit for the Temptations. The song was written by Smokey Robinson with fellow "Miracle", Ronald White. They wrote it specifically for the voice of David Ruffin. It reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 43 in the UK. A subsequent UK release reached Number 2 in 1992. This was in the wake of the film of the same name which starred Macaulay Culkin, Anna Chlumsky, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The personnel of the Temptations has changed through the years and has included many Motown greats. They have also gone by the following names:
The Cavaliers, The Distants, The El Domingoes, The Elgins, Otis Williams and the Distants, Otis Williams and the Siberians, The Pirates, and The Primes.
7. You're still in the store where the radio is tuned to station CSNY. Their weatherman, Neil Young, is advising that everyone should hurry indoors because the rain will be accompanied by which meteorological phenomenon that hasn't hit since 1978?

Answer: Four strong winds

"Think I'll go out to Alberta,
Weather's good there in the fall."

"Four Strong Winds" has become a folk standard without ever really becoming a major hit in the US or UK. It was written by Canadian Ian Tyson of "Ian and Sylvia" and they had a big hit with the song in Canada. In 1964, a version by Bobby Bare reached Number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 3 on the US Country chart. Neil Young's 1978 cover reached Number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 57 in the UK. The song has also been considered as a possible provincial song for the Canadian province of Alberta.

Various combinations of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young have existed although, in 1978, Neil Young was not part of any of them.
8. You run home and switch on Radio FunTrivia in time to hear movies correspondent, Nettie Fowler. She's just flown in from Hollywood and is speaking live from the airport carousel. Her advice to listeners is to walk on through the wind and to walk on through the rain. At that moment, interference cuts her out. What was Nettie going on to say?

Answer: Though your dreams be tossed and blown

"Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone"

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is sung by character Nettie Fowler in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, "Carousel". Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles and Roy Hamilton have both had US hits with the song but it is probably most associated with the Liverpool band, "Gerry and the Pacemakers". Their version topped the UK chart in 1963 and reached Number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. In the UK, it was their third single release and their third Number 1, and they became the first act to achieve this feat. The previous two singles had been "How Do You Do It?" and "I Like It".

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is well-known in soccer circles for being the anthem of the English club, Liverpool. Less well-known is the fact that it's also the anthem of Celtic and Hibernian (Scotland), Feyenoord and FC Twente (Netherlands), Club Brugge (Belgium), and F.C. Tokyo (Japan). (Source : Wikipedia)
9. Radio FunTrivia has a message sent in from a Ms Donna Summer and a Mr Richard Harris. They've come back from the park and realised that someone (no-one's accepting responsibility!) left something out in the rain. They're concerned because they'll never have the recipe again. What did they leave?

Answer: A cake

"MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!"

MacArthur Park was written by prolific singer-songwriter, Jimmy Webb, and was first a hit for Richard Harris in 1968. Harris took the song to Number 1 in the UK and Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also annoyed Webb by insisting on singing the incorrect "MacArthur's Park" in the lyrics. Harris also enjoyed a successful acting career which saw him portray King Arthur, Oliver Cromwell and Albus Dumbledore in the first two "Harry Potter" movies.

A decade on, MacArthur Park returned to the top of the charts courtesy of disco diva, Donna Summer. Her version topped the Billboard Hot 100 and reached Number 5 in the UK.
10. That forecast for 100% rain was definitely correct. There's so much of the stuff that flooding is imminent. Which appropriately named Scottish band are working on flood control by holding back the river but probably wishing they were lucky enough to have love all around?

Answer: Wet Wet Wet

Wet Wet Wet was formed in 1982 by Marti Pellow, Tommy Cunningham, Graeme Clark and Neil Mitchell. "Wishing I Was Lucky" was released in 1987 and reached Number 6 in the UK and Number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Hold Back the River" (1990) was a Number 31 UK hit.

Their biggest UK hit was a cover of the Troggs' "Love Is All Around" which hit Number 1 in 1994 and Number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100. It spent 15 weeks at Number 1, narrowly failing to beat the record held by Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do". In its 15th week at the top, Pellow ordered that distribution be halted as he did not feel the song worthy of the honour, but it is questionable whether or not this affected its subsequent placing at Number 2.
