Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I can see it in your eyes, that you despise the same old lies You heard the night before And though it's just a line to you, for me it's true It never seemed so right before" What was the title of this smash hit?

Answer: Somethin' Stupid

This was a huge worldwide hit for Frank and Nancy Sinatra closely following on the heels of their individual successes - "Stranger's In The Night" and "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" respectively. It was #1 in the U.S. for four weeks and in the U.K., Australia and Canada for two weeks. Ironically, it would be the last top ten song either would record! The song was written by a virtually unknown Pennsylvanian musician and writer, C. Carson Parks. Suffice to say, it would also be his biggest selling composition although the Mills Brothers recorded another one of his songs in 1968, "Cab Driver".
2. "Running just as fast as we can Holdin' onto one another's hand Tryin' to get away into the night And then you put your arms around me And we tumble to the ground And then you say" He (or she) said what?

Answer: I Think We're Alone Now

This was a #4 song for Tommy James and the Shondells and their first top ten hit since their #1 debut "Hanky Panky" in 1966. This song eventually became a #1 song when Tiffany covered it in 1987. Ironically, after two weeks at the top spot it was dislodged by another Tommy James' song "Mony, Mony", this time performed by Billy Idol. Tommy James, and his banker, were very happy fellows!
3. "When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher But that's what they were aimin' at And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass" You may recognize it, but do you know the title?

Answer: Creeque Alley

"Creeque Alley" was a song written about the formation and early years of The Mamas and The Papas and was a #5 song in 1967. Believe it or not, there's a website which explores and interprets the song line by line! Here's the URL - http://www.creequealley.com/
4. "All across the nation such a strange vibration People in motion There's a whole generation with a new explanation People in motion, people in motion" Where are all these busy people?

Answer: San Francisco

If any song was the anthem of the "peace and love" movement of the Haight-Ashbury crowd, this Scott McKenzie song was it! It only made it to #4 on the Billboard charts but was a #1 hit in the U.K. for four weeks. The song was written by John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas as a promotion vehicle for the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Phillips and McKenzie were close friends dating back to their childhood. McKenzie dropped out of the music business altogether in the late 60's not to return until the mid-'80's when he was regularly a member of the re-vamped Mamas and The Papas until 1996.

He co-wrote "Kokomo" for the Beach Boys in 1988 with Phillips.
5. "Why do all the boys just pass you by Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy So shed those dowdy feathers and fly... a little bit" Who was this gal?

Answer: Georgy Girl

"Georgy Girl" reached a peak chart position of #2. Words and music were written by Jim Dale and Tom Springfield, respectively, and the song was recorded by The Seekers for the movie of the same name starring Lynn Redgrave, James Mason, Alan Bates and Charlotte Rampling. I recall a lot of cringing by "George" males whenever this song was played!
6. "Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever, forever, we never will part, oh, how I'll love you Together, together, that's how it must be To live without you would only be heartbreak for me" A Bacharach lyric - it's title?

Answer: I Say A Little Prayer

This was released by Dionne Warwick in 1967, was a #4 hit and a gold record. The song was then covered by Aretha Franklin early in 1968, became a #10 hit that year and also was certified a gold record. Hal David, Bacharach's composer, wasn't that keen on releasing Warwick's version especially at the tempo it was sung at... too fast.

It worked for Warwick and if anything, Franklin's version had an even quicker tempo.
7. "Who's tripping down the streets of the city Smilin' at everybody she sees Who's reachin' out to capture a moment Everyone knows it's _______" It is whom?

Answer: Windy

"Windy" was written by Ruthann Friedman and she claimed it was about a man - a San Francisco hippie - who was her lover at the time. When The Association recorded it, they turned "Windy" into a girl. It was a million selling Gold Record, a #1 for four weeks and their biggest hit of all time.
8. "Now once I was downhearted Disappointment was my closest friend But then you came and he soon departed And you know he never showed his face again" A big R&B dance hit in 1967 entitled?

Answer: (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher

This was a #6 hit for Jackie Wilson. He started singing with a number of R&B and gospel groups in the early 1950's but went solo in 1957. He was a longtime stalwart on the R&B scene throughout the late 50's and early 60's and occasionally, a song like this would cross over to the pop charts and have a modicum of success. Altogether, he would have six top ten pop hits but "Higher and Higher" would be his last.

In 1975, while performing in New Jersey, he suffered a major stroke from which he never recovered.

He remained hospitalized until his death in 1984. He was a R&R Hall of Fame inductee in 1987.
9. "There's nothing you can do that can't be done Nothing you can sing that can't be sung Nothing you can say, but you can learn How to play the game - it's easy" What was the title of this #1?

Answer: All You Need Is Love

This Beatles song was #1 all over the world in the summer of 1967 - one week in the U.S. and Canada, three weeks in the U.K. and four weeks in Australia. The first public performance of the song occurred during the "Our World" project, a premiere worldwide TV special.

It was broadcast in selected countries around the world and featured music from every civilized continent. It was broadly advertised that The Beatles would be singing this song live. I vividly remember a few friends and I rushing to someone's home purposefully to watch The Beatles' segment. During the lengthy, ongoing "All you need is love" refrain at the end, many identifiable personages were in the chorus singing along, among them, Jagger, Marianne Faithful, Jane Asher, Patti Boyd, Graham Nash and Keith Moon.

It was a global "love-in".
10. At the very start of this song, a voice speaking in carny fashion utters these words: "A preachment, dear friends, you are about to receive on John Barleycorn, nicotine, and the temptations of Eve". Then the group, The Hombres, sang the song starting with these lines: "No parkin' by the sewer sign, hot dog, my razor's broke Water drippin' up the spout, but I don't care". Do you remember the title of this one?

Answer: Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)

Bill Cunningham, a member of The Box Tops, wrote this song and The Hombres were a quartet out of Memphis which included Cunningham's brother, B.B. Cunningham. It would be their only hit at #12 on the Billboard charts and a top forty song for ten weeks, just enough for it to be rated the 95th most popular song for the year. Most of the members of The Hombres were the touring group for Ronny and The Daytonas in the mid-60's when that group was big.

It would seem that after this song, The Hombres just faded away - a "google" search revealed very little.
