Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although she was originally known as a child actress, Demi Lovato has also had success as a musician and as a model. In 2015 she released a song that reached number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100. What is the name of this seemingly contradictorily titled song that includes the line "Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite"?

Answer: Cool for the Summer

Born in 1992, Demi Lovato first gained fame for her work on television shows like "Barney & Friends", "Camp Rock", and "Sonny with a Chance". Lovato's first song in the Billboard Hot 100 was a duet performed with Joe Jonas titled "This Is Me" that peaked at the number nine position.

The song "Cool for the Summer" was Lovato's first single off of her "Confident" album and its suggestive lyrics are accompanied by a synthesizer beat and guitar riffs.
2. For several years leading up to 2015 Taylor Swift has had multiple top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hits. In 2015 one of her songs occupied the number one position for two weeks. What is the name of this song, a satirization of both the media and Swift's personal relationships, that features the line "Boys only want love if it's torture"?

Answer: Blank Space

In addition to being number one for two weeks in 2015, "Blank Space" occupied the top spot in 2014 for five weeks. Incredibly "Blank Space" propelled Taylor Swift to be the first woman in the fifty-six year history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart to have two straight songs at number one as "Shake It Off" was the top song before "Blank Space". Both of these hit songs came off of the extremely successful "1989" album from Swift that is both a homage to the pop music scene of the 1980s and recognizes the year of her birth.
3. Justin Bieber released his first studio album in three years in November 2015. One of the songs from the album was praised as a mixture of dancehall and tropical music. Sharing its name with a board game, which song that reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015 contains the lyrics "You know I try but I don't do too well with apologies"?

Answer: Sorry

"Sorry" actually peaked at number one on the charts in 2016 for three weeks and it was replaced at number one by another song of Justin Bieber, "Love Yourself". Surprisingly given his popularity, before 2015 Justin Bieber had never had a song reach the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 as his song "Boyfriend" was his previous top song at number two in 2012.

The song "Sorry" sounds like a public apology and although he didn't specify who the apology is directed toward, I'd guess that Selena Gomez is a possibility.
4. Although the song "Waves" was originally released in 2013, it wasn't until 2014 when a remixed version from DJ Robin Schulz came out that it cracked the Billboard Hot 100 top 20. Which Dutch musician born with the name Dennis Princewell Stehr released the song "Waves" which climbed to the eighteenth position in 2015?

Answer: Mr Probz

As well as being Mr Probz's first song in the Billboard Hot 100 top 20, the Robin Schulz inspired remix of "Waves" peaked at number one on the charts of seven different countries. In the Netherlands Mr Probz has released songs in both English and Dutch and his first song to reach number one on the Dutch charts was "Nothing Really Matters" in 2014.

The music video for "Waves" was shot in Tulum, Mexico, a beautiful place that I have visited that is well-known for its beaches and ruins of a walled, Mayan city.
5. The Canadian rapper Drake released a song in 2015 that reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. What is the name of this song about an ex-lover that includes the line "You used to call me on my cell phone late night when you need my love"?

Answer: Hotline Bling

Similar to many songs about an ex-lover, "Hotline Bling" evokes emotions of both being hurt and being bitter about the relationship having ended. Drake is the stage name of Aubrey Drake Graham who was born in Toronto, Canada in 1986. The artist's first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 also peaked at number two when "Best I Ever Had" was released in 2009.
6. Similar to Drake, Shawn Mendes is also a Canadian musician but he is better known for his pop songs rather than rap music. Which song did Mendes release in 2015 about moving on, a number four hit on the Billboard Hot 100, that included the line "Needle and the thread, gotta get you out of my head"?

Answer: Stitches

Born in 1998, Shawn Mendes released his first album, "Handwritten", in 2015 and it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. "Stitches" was a song from this album as was his "Life of the Party" song that propelled Mendes to be the first person to debut a song in the top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100 at under 16 years of age.
7. You'll need to focus on this next question to come up with the correct answer. Which artist who was born in Boca Raton, Florida, in 1993 and who previously appeared on the Nickelodeon show "Victorious" released the song "Focus" in 2015 that reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart?

Answer: Ariana Grande

In addition to "Focus", Ariana Grande also featured on the songs "Bang Bang", "Love Me Harder", and "One Last Time" which also cracked the top 20 in 2015. Ariana Grande's first two albums "Yours Truly" in 2013 and "My Everything" in 2014 both reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

In addition to her solo work, Grande has also collaborated with Mac Miller, Big Sean, Liz Gillies, Iggy Azalea, Zedd, and Andrea Bocelli among others.
8. Our next song spent an impressive fourteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015 and it was the fourth song collaborated on by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. What is the name of this 1980s inspired song that includes the line "Girls hit your hallelujah (whoo)"?

Answer: Uptown Funk

In addition to its chart success, "Uptown Funk" was also critically acclaimed and it won the coveted Grammy Award for Record of the Year. While "Uptown Funk" was Ronson's first song to crack the Billboard Hot 100, Bruno Mars had four songs before 2015, "Just the Way You Are", "Grenade", "Locked Out of Heaven", and "When I Was Your Man" reach the number one spot. "Uptown Funk" was an homage to the Minneapolis sound of the early 1980s that featured artists like Prince who utilized boogie and electronic dance music.
9. In 2015 Ed Sheeran released a song that was inspired by his ex-girlfriend that reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also accompanied by a music video that showed images of Sheeran as a child doing things like playing with musical instruments and Lego. What is the name of this song that includes the line "Hearts are never broken and time's forever frozen still"?

Answer: Photograph

The lyrics for the song "Photograph" were written by both Ed Sheeran and Johnny McDaid who was a member of the band Snow Patrol. "Photograph" was the fifth single released from Sheeran's "x" album and it was the fourth song from the album to make it into the Billboard Hot 100 top 20. Similar to many top songs, "Photograph" is filled with emotions and fond memories of a break-up and the hope that in time our love will move on.
10. Our final song was released by Ellie Goulding and it was featured on the soundtrack of the 2015 film "Fifty Shades of Grey". Similar to the movie, the song's lyrics discuss being in love and desiring more in spite of how much it may hurt. What is the name of this song that reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015?

Answer: Love Me Like You Do

In 2014, Goulding released her first song for a soundtrack of a popular movie with "Beating Heart" that was featured in "Divergent" and which peaked at the number eighty-eight position. In addition to her work on the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack, Goulding also released an album titled "Delirium" in 2015 that peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. "Love Me Like You Do" reached number one in more than twenty countries and it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
