Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "This Time" was a Top 10 hit in 1961 for this heartthrob. Who was he?

Answer: Troy Shondell

Billboard number six, October 23, 1961. Shondell, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, began recording in 1958, and had some local success in the Midwest, before hitting the national charts with this song. He was gone from the music industry by 1963.
2. "Wild Weekend" made it to the Top 10 in the winter of 1963. Which artist was responsible for that?

Answer: The Rebels

Billboard number eight, March 9, 1963. From Buffalo, New York, the group was asked by a local disc jockey to record this song to be used as his theme song. They had written the song two years earlier and only had regional success. The 1963 re-release was the one that made them one hit wonders.
3. In 1965 "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" cracked the Top 20 for this artist. What was his name?

Answer: Jonathan King

Billboard number 17, November 6, 1965. King was a British singer and songwriter whose success with this song only propelled him to greater heights. He was a TV producer, he ran Decca Records in the late 70's and also had an American radio program in 1980. He has also written for newspapers and magazines, as well as a run for public office in Great Britain. Busy guy.
4. A hit with a psychedelic sound made it to the Top 10 in 1966 for this group. "Psychotic Reaction" hit paydirt for whom?

Answer: Count Five

Billboard number five, October 15, 1966. Founded in 1964 in California, they were actually a garage rock band that had many incarnations and members before this hit. Incredibly, they broke up in the next year or so, because 5 of the members decided to pursue college degrees. What a concept!
5. This spoken lyric recording made it to the Top 10 in 1967. "An Open Letter To My Teenage Son" was recorded by whom?

Answer: Victor Lundberg

Billboard number ten, December 2, 1967. Lundberg was a radio personality in Grand Rapids, Michigan when he released this recording, which was about patriotism. This was when the US was heavily involved in the Vietnam War.
6. In 1968 "Journey To The Center Of Your Mind" continued the psychedelic craze in music. Who recorded it?

Answer: The Amboy Dukes

Billboard number 16, August 24, 1968. Originally from Detroit, the song was the first and only hit for the group, but the song launched the career of Ted Nugent.
7. "The Worst That Could Happen" was recorded in 1969 by this group. It REALLY was a one hit wonder. Who did it?

Answer: The Brooklyn Bridge

Billboard number 3, February 3, 1969. Johnny Mastrangelo (Maestro) was a Brooklyn boy who made good in the late 1950's with "The Crests" with songs like "Sixteen Candles", "Step By Step", and "Trouble In Paradise", among others. After briefly retiring from music, he joined with the "Del-Satins" in 1967, and formed "The Brooklyn Bridge".

This song was smash hit for the group who recorded some others later on, such as "You Husband/My Wife", "Blessed Is The Rain", "Welcome Me Love" and a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" which was from the Broadway show "Carousel". Maestro and the group continue to perform these days and are tremendously popular on the oldies curcuit.
8. Back to 1963 for this female soloist's hit. Who sang "Mama Didn't Lie" that year?

Answer: Jan Bradley

Billboard number 14, March 9, 1963. A Mississippi girl, Bradley auditioned for Curtis Mayfield who was best known as a member of "The Impressions". She recorded this song as well as a couple of others which Mayfield had written. Mayfield then got into a legal battle over ownership of the songs he had written, effectively derailing Bradley's career.
9. Number 2 was the position for this instrumental in late 1963. "Washington Square" was a hit for which group?

Answer: The Village Stompers

Billboard number two, November 23, 1963. Not surprisingly, they were from Greenwich Village in New York City. They had a few other songs which actually cracked the Top 100, but never duplicated their success.
10. Late 1965 saw this catchy tune crack the Top 10. Who made"Keep On Dancing" a hot hit?

Answer: The Gentrys

Billboard number 4, October 30, 1965. Formed in 1963 by a bunch of Tennessee high school buddies, this song was their only foray into the Top 40. They did however appear on major TV shows, and toured with The Beach Boys as well as Sonny & Cher. They disbanded in 1966, and reformed again in 1969 for a brief time.

Their lead singer, one Jimmy Hart, is well known to all wrestling fans, as he gained great fame in the 80's and 90's in the WWE as "The Mouth Of The South", as he portrayed a professional wrestling manager.
