Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1980: Which Bruce Springsteen hit single, originally written for The Ramones to perform, was his first Top Ten hit in the U.S.?

Answer: Hungry Heart

After seeing The Ramones perform in Asbury Park, NJ, Bruce Springsteen decided to write "Hungry Heart" for the group to perform. However, his manager convinced him to keep the song for himself. His manager was right - "Hungry Heart" off of "The River" album was Springsteen's first Top Ten hit in the U.S., with many more hit singles yet to come.
2. 1981: There are many phone numbers you may have forgotten during your lifetime, but I bet this wasn't one of them: What was Jenny's phone number?

Answer: 867-5309

"Jenny, I've got your number...8-6-7-5-3-0-9...", Thank Tommy Tutone for this infectious tune you'll probably still remember even after you're too old to remember your own name! (Whatever happened to him, anyway? Another one-hit wonder, I guess...)
3. 1982: Dexy's Midnight Runners released a single that scored high on the US pop charts and commanded Top Single of the Year on the pop charts. Unfortunately, they could not follow up on the single's success and faded into pop music history as a one-hit wonder, at least in th US. What was the single?

Answer: Come On Eileen

"Come On Eileen" featured a different, unique sound in an age when over-synthesized pop dominated. Fortunately, thanks to its upbeat tempo and lively rhythm, its popularity still endures with party crowds, especially in karaoke bars!
4. 1983: The Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart, while working on the group's album that would be released this year, accidentally played a track backwards. The odd sound produced by this mishap inspired the notable synth-bass heard in the group's most successful single. What was it?

Answer: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)

Singer Annie Lenox and guitarist Dave Stewart first gained recognition as members of a British group called The Tourists. The two launched Eurythmics in 1981. The duo continued to produce music until 1990, when they split up. (Note: Annie Lennox has since done well as a solo artist, and the pair restarted Eurythmics in 1999.)
5. 1984: A new artist with a one-word name, 'Shannon', burst onto the dance and pop scene. What was the name of her first and biggest single, which hit #8 on the U.S. Pop charts and #1 on the Dance/R&B charts?

Answer: Let the Music Play

"I Feel For You" was a hit for Chaka Khan; "Encore" was a hit for disco diva Cheryl Lynn (of "Got To Be Real" fame); and "You Give Good Love" was a hit for emerging diva Whitney Houston. By the way, Shannon (born Brenda Shannon Greene) has continued in the music biz but has not duplicated her former success.
6. 1985: A group called "USA For Africa", comprised of many of the day's top artists, collaborated under producer Quincy Jones to create a historic tune to address the famine crisis in African countries. What was the name of this single?

Answer: We Are The World

"We Are The World" featured a massive and impressive assembly of the top music artists of the day, including Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie (who co-wrote the song), Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. "Live Aid" was actually a live concert held simultaneously in the US and the UK to combat famine in Africa. "Hands Across America" was a 1986 event where over 5 million participants across the U.S. held hands in a fundraising effort to combat hunger and homelessness. (By the way, many artists have produced songs called "Healing Hands".)
7. 1986 was a great year for this former member of Genesis, who not only scored a #1 hit single from his album "SO", but also saw two other cuts from that album make it into the Top 40. The video for that #1 single, incidentally, racked up 9 MTV Music Awards, the most in history. Who is this very fortunate artist?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

The video for the #1 single in question, "Sledgehammer", was unquestionably one of the most wacky, colorful, creative videos ever made. Gabriel's other two songs in the Top 40 were "Big Time" and "In Your Eyes" (a wedding reception staple).
8. 1987: Up to this point, U2 had achieved considerable success in their native Ireland as well as the UK, but had never achieved a #1 hit in the U.S. That all changed in May of this year with what single from their "Joshua Tree" album?

Answer: With or Without You

The "Joshua Tree" album topped the U.S. charts for 9 weeks in 1987 and sold over 7 million copies in the U.S.
9. 1988: A skinny 22-year old British kid (who looked all of 16 years old) with an extraordinarily HUGE voice saw his album, "Whenever You Need Somebody", reach #10 on the U.S. pop charts and #1 on the Canadian pop charts in June of this year. (It had already reached #1 in his native UK the previous November.) Name this singer who had such hits as "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Together Forever".

Answer: Rick Astley

Rick Astley's last major commercial success was the single, "Cry for Help", in 1991. Fans, don't fear, however: in 2004, he was rumored to be making a comeback at the tender age of 38.
10. And finally, an easy one for 1989: The Andrae Crouch Choir provided background vocals on this single whose video started a controversy in the religious community. What was it?

Answer: Like A Prayer (Madonna)

The controversy over Madonna's "Like A Prayer" involved the Catholic church setting and religious images featured in the video. Combined with the sexual innuendo of the song (and Madonna's sexy bad girl image), a scandal was born. Incidentally, the scandal cost Madonna a lucrative Pepsi endorsement.
