Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Green Day
Answer: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" was from the Green Day album "American Idiot" (2004) and reached number two in the Billboard charts, kept off the top slot by 50 Cent's "Candy Shop". A version of the song is by Dwight Shrute (Rainn Wilson) and Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) in the TV show "The Office" during gift opening, in a Christmas episode.
2. Eddy Grant
Answer: Electric Avenue
Grant's biggest hit in USA and Canada, and second biggest in UK, was written about the first street in Brixton, London to be lit by electric light. Electric Avenue in Brixton has a high Caribbean population and was the focal point of the 1981 Brixton riots against high unemployment, racism and lack of opportunities.
3. AC/DC
Answer: Highway To Hell
From the 1979 album of the same name, "Highway To Hell" was written about the punishing touring schedule the band maintained in order to get success. The album was the last studio album recorded with vocalist Bon Scott before his death in 1980.
4. Suzi Quatro
Answer: Devil Gate Drive
Bass playing, leather clad Suzi Quatro paved the way for many female rock musicians with this and other hits in the 70s. "Devil Gate Drive" was her second UK number one, although she is better known in the USA for her 1978 duet with Chris Norman, "Stumblin' In", which was released after she played bass playing, leather clad Leather Tuscadero on the TV show "Happy Days".
5. Gerry Rafferty
Answer: Baker Street
Rafferty started his career with folk music band The Humblebums, the most famous ex member of which is comedian Billy Connelly. Following The Humblebums' split, he formed Stealers Wheel who had success with "Stuck In The Middle With You" in 1973. A solo career followed and in 1978 he recorded the "City To City" album from which "Baker Street" was released as a single and a top ten hit all around the world.
6. Rod Stewart
Answer: Gasoline Alley
Rod Stewart was a member of Faces while releasing solo albums "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down", "Gasoline Alley" and "Every Picture Tells a Story". The "Gasoline Alley" album featured covers of tracks by Elton John, Bob Dylan and Eddie Cochran as well as heavily featuring appearances by Faces members such as Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan. Stewart became Sir Rod when he was knighted in 2016.
7. The Beatles
Answer: Penny Lane
Penny Lane is a street in Liverpool which was a major bus terminus in the 60s.
The sights of Penny Lane were familiar both John Lennon and Paul McCartney as they would have to change buses at Penny Lane in order to reach the other's house. Although "Penny Lane" reached number one in USA, Australia and Canada, it was kept off the top spot in UK by "Release Me" by Englebert Humperdinck.
8. Kraftwerk
Answer: Autobahn
Electronic band Kraftwerk released "Autobahn" in 1974. The track has lyrics in their native German and is intended to capture the feeling of driving for hours on end, with the synthesizers recreating the sounds of the wind, rain and passing vehicles. Although the single went top ten in Germany, it found its greatest success in New Zealand, where it reached number four in the charts.
9. Chuck Berry
Answer: Route 66
Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Bing Crosby, Depeche Mode, Rolling Stones, Them, John Mayer - the list of stars that have recorded this track from 1946 is endless, but it is Chuck Berry's 1961 version that most people know, even though Berry never released it as a single.
10. Bruce Springsteen
Answer: Thunder Road
"The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves. Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays" are the opening lines that set the scene for one of the best journeys ever taken through a song. From the classic 1975 album "Born To Run", this track was not released as a single but still has become one of Springsteen's most recognisable songs all the way to the final lines of "So Mary, climb in.
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win"
