Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What label signed Charley Pride to his first recording contract?

Answer: RCA Victor

After hearing a tape of Charlie singing, Chet Atkins signed him to a recording contract in 1965. His first single, "The Snakes Crawl At Night" failed to make the country Top 40 chart. He was initially called "Country Charley Pride" in the promotional materials sent to radio stations along with the single but no photo accompanied the materials causing speculation that the label was concerned about his acceptance because of his race.
2. In 1971 Charley Pride recorded a song called "All His Children" for the movie "Sometimes A Great Notion". Was the song nominated for an Oscar?

Answer: Yes

"All His Children" was composed by Henry Mancini. Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics. Charley performed the song at the 1972 Oscars with The Mitchell Singing Boys Choir. The award, however, went to Isaac Hayes for "The Theme from Shaft". Charley's recording, however, peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
3. Is Charley Pride his real name?

Answer: Yes

He was born Charley Frank Pride on March 18, 1934. In 1971 he was named Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association. He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry on May 1, 1993--only the second African-American to do so, the first being Deford Bailey. Charley performed the National Anthem before game five of the 2010 World Series between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants.
4. In what year was Charley Pride inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2000

Charley was inducted in 2000 along with the late Faron Young. Faron was one of Charley's biggest supporters early in his career. After years in its original location on the area of Nashville known as Music Row, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum closed its doors and moved to a new location the following year in downtown Nashville.
5. In what state was Charley Pride born?

Answer: Mississippi

Charley was born in Sledge, Mississippi on March 18, 1934. He was the fourth of eleven children. Like Charley his older brother Mack played professional baseball in the Negro League. Charley's mother bought him his first guitar at age 14 and he taught himself to play.
6. In what year did Charley Pride win the Country Music Association's "Entertainer of the Year" award?

Answer: 1971

"Entertainer of the Year" is the highest, most prestigious award given by the Country Music Association. In 1971 Charley beat out Merle Haggard (the previous year's winner), Loretta Lynn, Jerry Reed and Conway Twitty. Loretta would win the following year. Charley was nominated again in 1972 and 1973, losing to Loretta Lynn and Roy Clark respectively.
7. In the 1970s, Charley recorded a tribute album to the late Hank Williams, Sr. What was the album's title?

Answer: There's A Little Bit of Hank In Me

"There's A Little Bit of Hank In Me" was released in January, 1980. It peaked at number one on the "Billboard Country Albums chart". Charley had been performing Hank Williams songs throughout his career. With the exception of the title track, which was written by John Schweers, all of the tracks were written or co-written by Williams.
8. Which of these place names is NOT part of the title of a Charley Pride hit?

Answer: Missouri

"You're My Jamaica" was the first single released from Charley's album of the same name. It was written by Kent Robbins. It was released in July, 1979 and went on to become Charley's 22nd number one country hit according to Billboard's "Hot Country Singles" chart.

"Roll On Mississippi" was the title track of Charley's 28th album. It was written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan. It peaked at number seven on the Billboard "Hot Country Singles" chart in May of 1981.

"Is Anybody Going to San Antone" was released in February, 1970. It was the first single from his album "Charley Pride's 10th Album". It became his third consecutive number one country record.
9. True or False: Ronnie Milsap was once Charley Pride's opening act.

Answer: True

Charley saw Ronnie Milsap perform at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles and immediately saw his potential as a country artist. He persuaded him to move to Nashville and hooked him up with his manager Jack Johnson who secured a recording contract for him with RCA Records. Charley hired him to tour with him as his opening act.

When Ronnie's career really began to soar he was replaced by the late Gary Stewart.
10. Where was Charley's first live album recorded?

Answer: Panther Hall, Fort Worth, Texas

Charley's first live album peaked at number two on the Billboard country album chart in 1969. It remained on that chart for 34 weeks. His rendition of the Hank Williams classic "Kaw-Liga" was the only single released from that album. It peaked at number three on the Billboard "Hot Country Singles " chart.
