Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which combo played behind Bob Dylan for several years and had their cover of "Tears Of Rage" included on the CD "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: The Band

The Band evolved out of several lineups and were busy as Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks between 1959 and 1963. They parted company with Hawkins in 1963 just before they met Dylan, who was looking for musicians to support his new electrified sound. From the spring of 1966 they played with him on tour.

The association lasted for about two years and included numerous recording sessions. The Band continued to play and record until 1976.

"Tears Of Rage" was included on the 1968 album "Music From Big Pink", so named because they recorded in the basement of a pink house in New York State.

The song was written by Dylan and The Band's lead singer Richard Manuel. It also appeared on Dylan's LP "The Basement Tapes", which was recorded in 1967 but not released until 1975. The release was credited to "Bob Dylan & The Band".
2. They were in the forefront of the English folk rock movement in the 1960s. Which band's cover of the Bob Dylan number "Percy's Song" was included on the CD "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Fairport Convention

Dylan wrote "Percy's Song" in 1964. In 1969 it was picked up by the English folk-rockers Fairport Convention and featured on their "Unhalfbricking" album.

Sandy Denny, who was a short-lived member of the Fairports for two spells, sang the lead. She had one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices of the 1960s and 1970s.

"Si Tu Dois Partir", another Dylan composition, was Fairport Convention's most successful single, reaching number 21 in the UK in 1969.

They also recorded Dylan's "Jack O'Diamonds"; "I'll Keep It With Mine"; and "Million Dollar Bash". As time passed, they concentrated on more of their own compositions.

Dylan included Percy's Song on "Biograph" (1985).

(Okay: you're annoyed that I put Steeleye Span in there as a red herring. So, sue me.)
3. Which singing and acting star had her cover of "Buckets Of Rain" included in the CD of Bob Dylan covers "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Bette Midler

Midler recorded it on "Songs For The New Depression" in 1976.

People tend to forget that Midler was a singer and songwriter before she was an actor.

"From A Distance" (written by Julie Gold) was a US number one for Midler in 1990. "The Rose" (written by Amanda McBroom) was number one in 1979; "The Wind Beneath My Wings" (Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley) topped the Billboard charts in 1988.

Midler's own best composition "You're Movin' Out Today", written with Carole Bayer Sager and Bruce Roberts, was number 11 in 1977. Bayer Sager's version reached number six in the UK.

Dylan included "Buckets Of Rain" on the 1975 album "Blood On The Tracks".
4. He was a gravelly-voiced crooner known for singing to prisoners. Whose cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" was included in the CD of covers "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was one of the most important and influential country singers of his era.

Billboard records 119 songs in the Hot 100; 40 in the top 10; and nine at number one. "It Ain't Me Babe" reached number four in January 1965.

Dylan included the song on "Another Side of Bob Dylan" in 1964.

Can I let you into a secret? Every time I play "And The Times They Were A-Changin'" I skip "It Ain't Me Babe". I just don't like the version.
5. At times she was romantically linked with Bob Dylan, certainly she sang a lot of his songs. Whose cover of "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word" was on the Billboard Hot 100 and was included in the CD of Dylan covers "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Joan Baez

In 1969, the Baez version peaked at number 86 on the Hot 100.

Baez and Dylan were friends; she encouraged his early career; and they often sang together. Was their relationship closer though? - that was a frequently asked question. "USA Today" was in no doubt, in June 2019 stating they had been lovers.

That relationship seemed to sour on Dylan's 1965 British tour, when he refused to let Baez share a stage.

And Peter Howell, movie critic of the "Toronto Star", wrote in 2009: "Joan Baez finally got a public apology from Bob Dylan for the callous way he treated her when he broke up their 1960s love affair."

He quoted Dylan as saying in Toronto: "I feel very bad about it. "I was sorry to see our relationship end."

According to Dylan's own website, he has never recorded the song and has never sung it live.
6. Hailing from New Orleans, which singing brothers had their cover of Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side" included on the CD "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: The Neville Brothers

Although it failed to chart in the USA, "With God On Our Side" was a UK number 47 in 1989. The song was on the 1989 LP "Yellow Moon".

In a business where brotherly singing groups were not always related to each other, Art, Charles, Aaron, and Cyril Neville were the real things.

Formed in 1976, although they had little chart success in the USA, they won a Grammy in 1999.

The song traces some of the disastrous wars America has fought while claiming it had "God on our side." Dylan recorded it on "The Times They Are A-Changin'", but according to his official website sang it in concert just 29 times between 1963 and 1995.
7. Which African singer, businessman and politician recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Chimes Of Freedom" and later saw it included on the CD "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Youssou N'Dour

Born in Senegal in West Africa in 1959, Grammy winner Youssou N'Dour had a busy career as a singer, songwriter and businessman. He formed a group called the Etoile de Dakar. He later turned to politics and served as his country's Minister of Tourism and Minister of Culture.

Reviewing his album "History" in 2019, the British Sunday newspaper "The Observer" wrote: "Aside from his sublime voice and onstage charisma, Senegal's premier star has always been a musical innovator, fusing tradition and modernity".

Dylan included "The Chimes Of Freedom" on "Another Side Of Bob Dylan" in 1964.
8. Whose cover of "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" appeared on the soundtrack of the movie "Easy Rider" and was later included on a compilation of covers of Bob Dylan songs "And The Times They Were A-Changin'"?

Answer: Roger McGuinn

As lead singer of The Byrds, Roger McGun was well acquainted with the songs of Bob Dylan. His arrangement of "Mr. Tambourine Man" was to take the name 'Bob Dylan' out of the New York City coffee houses and into mainstream music. (He also made a hit out of Pete Seeger's "Turn, Turn, Turn".)

McGuinn was to record a number of Dylan songs over the years. In an interview with songfacts.com, he was asked who his favourite singers were and said "I like Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, Pete Seeger, and Joni Mitchell."

Dylan sang "It's All Right Ma, I'm Only Bleeding" on the 1965 album "Bringing It All Back Home."
9. Which band rewrote a Bob Dylan song, renamed it "Wagon Wheel" and took it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart?

Answer: Old Crow Medicine Show

The first of two bonus questions in this quiz since the song was not included on the covers album "And The Times They Were A-Changin'".

During the making of "Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid", Bob Dylan recorded several demos, one of which was the chorus of a song he called ""Rock Me Mama":

"So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me."

Ketch Secor wrote several verses, renamed it "Wagon Wheel" and recorded it with his band Old Crow Medicine Show.

The song was recorded by several other artists, including Darius Rucker who won a Grammy with it in 2013.
10. In the 1960s, many artists covered Bob Dylan songs. In that decade, which trio's cover of "Blowin' In The Wind" took them to number two on the Billboard Hot 100?

Answer: Peter, Paul, and Mary

The second of two bonus questions in this quiz since the song was not included on the covers album "And The Times They Were A-Changin'".

Like Dylan, PP&M were graduates of the coffee houses of Greenwich Village. They first played there in 1961.

The trio recorded several Dylan songs and were to have 19 songs in all on the Billboard Hot 100. Their sole number one was a cover of John Denver's "Leaving On a Jet Plane" in 1969.

The song was on Dylan's LP "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" in 1963. According to Dylan's official website, he had sung it 1,585 times between April 1962 and July 2019.
