Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Tiptoe," Ani sets her scene as she is "Standing on the piers" of which highway?

Answer: West Side Highway

"Tiptoe" is one of Ani's lyric poems that appears on her album, "Not a Pretty Girl" as well as on her compilation album, "Living In Clip."
2. From "Fuel": "And they say that alchoholics are always alchoholics even when they're as dry as my lips for years. Even when they're stranded on a _______ _______ _______ with no place in two thousand miles to buy beer."

Answer: small desert island

"Fuel" appears on Ani's album, "Little Plastic Castle." Much like "Tiptoe," this song is occasionally referred to as one of Ani's pieces of poetry, despite its distinct rhythm scheme, because it is primarily a spoken piece.
3. From "Hello Birmingham": "So they went and stuffed ______ down the barrel of a gun and after him they stuffed his only son."

Answer: God

I love Ani's use of metaphor in this song. She writes "Hello Birmingham" (from her album, "To The Teeth") in the true spirit of the Folk Songs of 1960s tying the assasination of Dr. King to the bombing of an abortion clinic. Through the powerful lyrics of "Hello Birmingham," Ani compares the 1960s civil rights movement to the pro-choice movement of contemporary America. From describing the distance to Birmingham as "Two miles as the crow flies" [an allusion to Jim Crow], to "the blood poured off the pulpit, yeah the blood poured down the picket lines" [relating to both Dr. King's role as a religious figure/social activist and to the religious right's harsh anti-choice stance], Ani's lyrics in this song are truely inspirational.
4. Which song is this lyric from? "...to take swings at each other on talk show tv, why don't you just go ahead and turn off the sun 'cause we'll never live long enough to undo everything they've done to you."

Answer: 'Tis of Thee

"'Tis of Thee" is off of Ani's album, "Up up up up up up." In light of the near-manifesto I wrote about the last song in the quiz, I will allow you all to glean your own meanings from this one.
5. True or False: This is the correct lyric as found in Ani's song "Superhero." "Every slow song on the radio is suddenly speaking to me, life may imitate art, but art imitates T.V."

Answer: False

The words that were incorrect in the question are indicated below in [brackets] "Every [pop] song on the radio is suddenly speaking to me, [art] may imitate [life], but [life] imitates T.V."
6. The following is a lyric from "Garden of Simple." "And what I meant to say is xxoo which means I'm thinking of you, which means I've been thinking of you all along." On which Ani album can you find this song?

Answer: Revelling

Found on "Revelling," the first of the two CDs in Ani's "Revelling/ Reckoning" 2 CD set, this is probably my favorite lyric in any of Ani's songs. I think it says a lot about the phrase "I love you," and how it is not used in its full glory by far too many people.
7. Fill in the missing words... "And when we leave the landlord will come and paint over _______ _______. I am walking out in the rain..."

Answer: it all

This lyric was from "Both Hands," which was first recorded on Ani's first album which was self-titled. It also appears on Ani's album, "Like I Said" as well as on "Living in Clip." For the longest time, I thought this lyric was, "And when we leave the light on we go, paint over the wall. I am walking out in the rain..." Maybe I'm just strange.
8. In which song does Ani tell her listeners that, regardless of their location, "The same rule always applies: smile pretty and watch your back?"

Answer: Every State Line

The full chorus that contains this line, which incidentally comes from the song "Every State Line," is as follows: "And every state line there's a new set of laws, and every police man comes equipped with extended claws. There's a thousand shades of white, there's a thousand shades of black; but the same rule always appies: smile pretty and watch your back." I have always wondered what inspired Ani to write this song, and if it was in response to a sentiment she held, or to a specific experience...
9. Fill in the blank phrase from this lyric found in "Cradle and All": "Youth is beauty, money is beauty, hell, _______ _______ _______ _______."

Answer: beauty is beauty sometimes

"Cradle and All" is on Ani's 1995 "Not a Pretty Girl" album. In terms of the lyric, I hear that "it's the luck of the draw, it's the natural law, it's a joke-- it's a crime" anyways. ;)
10. Last one. What is the correct wording of the first few lines in the song "Little Plastic Castle?"

Answer: "In a coffee shop in a city, which is every coffee shop in every city, on a day which is every day."
