Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How will I know

Answer: Whitney Houston

The third single to be released from Whitney's debut 1985 album, and the follow up to "Saving All My Love For You", this was the track that cracked MTV as well as the charts for her as it hit number one in USA and Canada, as well as reaching the top ten around the world. Backing vocalist on "How Will I Know" was none other than Whitney's mother, and successful gospel singer, Cissy Houston.
2. Do you really want to hurt me

Answer: Culture Club

Was it really as long ago as 1982 when "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" burst into the world? From nowhere, Boy George and the boys were everywhere as this record went to number one in 23 countries and was only kept off the top spot in USA by Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean".

Not bad for a song that George later admitted he didn't want released as it was such a personal song for him, being written about his relationship with Culture Club drummer Jon Moss.
3. Who are you

Answer: The Who

Known to millions as the theme song to the TV show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", "Who Are You" was released in 1978, from the album of the same name and was written following a volatile meeting Pete Townshend had attended with business manager Allen Klein.
4. What becomes of the brokenhearted

Answer: Jimmy Ruffin

Released in 1966, this track for Jimmy Ruffin went top ten in UK and USA, and would be his biggest hit in both countries, although it took a re release in 1974 to achieve this in UK. According to Kevin Costner, this song was the original choice for the title song for "The Bodyguard" movie (1992), an honour that eventually went to "I Will Always Love You", while a cover of "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" was used in "Fried Green Tomatoes" (1991), sung by Paul Young.
5. Should I stay or should I go

Answer: The Clash

Released in 1982, from the "Combat Rock" album, "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" reached the top 20 in UK, eventually hitting number one there when it was re released in 1991, on the back of a TV commercial for Levi jeans. The Spanish vocals on the song are in fact sung in Ecuadorian Spanish as they were translated by the Ecuadorian mother of the sound engineer of the recording session.
6. Have you ever seen the rain

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Although this track performed OK in UK, breaking the top 40, it did better in USA, reaching number eight, but it was Canadians that took "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" to their hearts, sending it the the number one spot there. There have been many theories about the meaning of song since its 1971 release, including Kent State shootings, the Vietnam War or the stabbing of Meredith Hunter at Altamont, but songwriter John Fogerty revealed it was actually written about the imminent departure from the band of his brother Tom.
7. What's love got to do with it

Answer: Tina Turner

Since splitting with Ike Turner, Tina had found solo success hard to come by. She had a minor hit finally in 1983 with a cover of the Al Green song "Let's Stay Together" and then hit the big time again with this 1984 release, which went to number one in USA, Canada and Australia as well as top ten in many other countries.

When it hit the top in USA, she became the oldest solo female artist to have a number one single, at age 44. This record was broken in 1998, by 52 year old Cher singing "Believe".
8. (What's so funny 'bout) peace, love, and understanding

Answer: Elvis Costello

This track was written by Nick Lowe and originally recorded by his band Brinsley Schwarz in 1974, but it failed to even come close to troubling the charts. Fast forward four years to 1978 and Elvis Costello covered it on his "Armed Forces" album, and had minor success with it.

The big pay day for Lowe came in the form of royalty cheques, though, after it was covered by Curtis Stigers for the movie "The Bodyguard" (1992) and included on the multi million selling soundtrack album.
9. What's going on

Answer: Marvin Gaye

From the album of the same name, which also was missing a question mark, "What's Going On" marked a change in Gaye's music from the usual Motown sound to songs with a more personal feeling. "What's Going On" was inspired by his brother Frankie's stories of action he had seen in the Vietnam war as well as a police brutality incident witnessed by The Four Tops and Gaye's own feelings towards the death a year earlier of Tammi Terrell.

When the finished recording was presented to head of Motown, Berry Gordy, he allegedly told Gaye it was the worst thing he had ever heard in his life. Good thing Gaye didn't listen and pushed for the track to be released.
10. Do you know the way to San Jose

Answer: Dionne Warwick

Like so many of Warwick's hits this was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She released it in 1968 and it quickly went top ten in both USA and UK, even though Warwick later admitted she didn't want to record the song originally as she thought it was a really silly song.
