Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Misfits sang about young people who were not from Earth. Where were these otherworldly teenagers from?

Answer: Mars

"Teenagers from Mars" first appeared on the album "Static Age," recorded in 1978. However, fans only heard it via another album, "Legacy of Brutality," until a reissue of "Static" in 1997.
2. In the Pixies' song "Dancing the Manta Ray," what is "chasing you"?

Answer: Saucers

The song was an alternate take on the subject of another one, the cleverly titled "Manta Ray." "Dancing" appeared as an extra track on a single, and later, on the album "The Complete B-Sides."
3. On David Bowie's classic album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars," how many songs have the word "Star" in the title? (This is not counting any b-sides, reissues or such, just the original album.)

Answer: 4

There are four such tracks. These are "Ziggy Stardust," "Starman," "Star" and "Lady Stardust."
4. The Human League recorded some early material under different names. What was one of them?

Answer: The Future

The synthpop group went through a number of name changes before they settled on the one by which most listeners came to know them. Among other monikers were The Future and The Men. Tracks from the group's salad days were reissued on the album "The Golden Hour of The Future."
5. What "electro" musician, known for his gloomy tales of a world dominated by robotics, released the song "Space Rock" in 2006?

Answer: Anthony Rother

Rother's bass-laden yet melodic music has earned heavy play by DJs in genres from house to hip-hop and alternative.
6. Vocalist Anne Clark stepped onto the alternative scene in the 1980s. She has often written about visions of a "dystopia" or nightmarish world, the opposite of a "utopia." What song, which appears on Clark's album "Word Processing," is a harrowing story of self-destruction?

Answer: Our Darkness

Clark released her first album, "Pressure Points," in 1985. She has continued to write and record, and her music remains staples of radio and club DJs' shows.

"Situation" is by Yaz, "Waiting for the Night" by Depeche Mode and "Bring on the Night" by the Police.
7. The soundtrack to which film included, in one musical piece, the noise of a spaceship opening fire?

Answer: Star Trek (I)

The album included "Klingon Battle," featuring the sounds from a duel between the enemy aliens and the Starship Enterprise. In 1999, the soundtrack was reissued in a special CD edition, which contained 11 extra tracks, including interviews with the cast of the film.
8. What artist released an album entitled "Replicas," based loosely on the plotline of "Blade Runner"?

Answer: Gary Numan

In the plotlines of the songs, humans shared space with robots, while dominant machines patrolled the outside world. Numan later had to explain that this vision of the future was not the only one he thought possible, nor was it what he wanted to happen.
9. The German group Kraftwerk were highly influential in early electronic music. They were among the first to play non-acoustic instruments, and their songs directly addressed the rise of technology. In one song, the group imagined themselves as literal components of a machine-based society. What was the title?

Answer: We are the Robots

The lyrics state, in part, "We are anti-mechanic." Why? You would think robots would love the people who fix them up. Go figure.
10. What classic science fiction movie's soundtrack included a musical piece entitled "1990s Theme," even though the film was released in 1982?

Answer: Tron

The 20th anniversary DVD edition, released 2002, contained extensive footage on the making of the film. "Tron" starred Jeff Bridges as hacker Kevin Flynn, trapped as a living program in a computerized world.
