Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the #10 song for the year 1969? "Ah, now I don't hardly know her, But I think I could love her, Crimson and clover. Ah when she comes walking over, Now I've been waitin' to show her, Crimson and clover, over and over."

Answer: Crimson and Clover

School boy Tommy James put together a group called the Shondelles when he was only 12 years old. The boys made a vanity recording of the song "Hanky Panky" while in high school, and shortly thereafter split up. Now this is where the story gets really interesting. A DJ from Pittsburgh somehow got hold of the record and started playing it, attracting the attention of a recording house who acquired the rights, and before long it was a number one hit.
Tommy James quickly formed a second band, calling this one Tommy James and the Shondelles. "Crimson and Clover" was their second number one hit.
2. What was the #2 song for the year 1969? ' "I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again But you're late, I wait around and then, I went to the door, I can't take any more, It's not you, you let me down again. Baby, baby, try to find, A little time and I'll make you mine.' I'll be home, I'll be beside the phone waiting for you. Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo."

Answer: Build Me Up Buttercup

Written by Tony Macaulay and Mike d'Abo, "Build Me Up Buttercup" was a number three hit for The Foundations. Their only number one hit was a song called "Baby, Now That I've Found You I Can't Let You Go", which has a lyric that I've always found disturbing because of the implicit possessiveness. "Build Me Up Buttercup" had a bit of a revival when it was used in the soundtrack of the movie "There's Something About Mary" which, ironically, makes light of the stalking of women.
3. What was the #8 hit for the year 1969? "Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner, But he knew it wouldn't last. Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona, For some California grass. Get back, get back, Get back to where you once belonged. Get back, get back, Get back to where you once belonged."

Answer: Get Back

Featuring Billy Preston on keyboards, "Get Back" was a number one hit for the Beatles in many different countries. It was recorded during the making of "Let It Be", a film that was supposed to be a documentary of the Beatles making an album, but turned out to be a the recorded history of the break-up of the band.
4. What was the #7 hit for the year 1969? "End of the spring and here she comes back, Hi Hi Hi Hi there. Them summer days, those summer days. That's when I had most of my fun back, High high high high there. Them summer days, those summer days. I "cloud nine" when I want to. Out of school, yeah. County fair in the country sun, And everything, it's true. Ooh yeah."

Answer: Hot Fun in the Summer Time

Sly and the Family Stone were something brand new on the music scene. They were a large group that was mixed both in gender and in race, and their music, for the most part, was an absolute joy to listen to. Some even credit the group with inventing the music we now know as funk.

This song followed their number one hit "Dance to the Music", and reached number two on the charts. Apparently this song was intended as a comment about the racial unrest that was prevalent that summer.
5. What was the #6 hit for the year 1969? "Dizzy, I'm so dizzy my head is spinning. Like a whirlpool it never ends, And it's you girl makin' it spin. You're making me dizzy."

Answer: Dizzy

"Dizzy" was the second number one hit for Tommy Roe, who is often referred to as the father of Bubblegum Music. "Dizzy" was written by Roe and Weller, and stayed at number one for four weeks. Roe's first number one hit was "Sheila".
6. What was the #5 hit for the year 1969? "Sometimes I'm right, then I can be wrong. My own beliefs are in my songs. A butcher, a banker, a drummer and then, Makes no difference what group I'm in. And so on, and so on, and scooby dooby, dooby."

Answer: Everyday People

"Everyday People", released earlier in the year than "Hot Fun in the Summertime", was a number one hit for Sly and the Family Stone. Both songs were written by Sylvester Stewart, which is Sly's real name.
7. What was the #4 song for the year 1969? "I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis. She tried to take me upstairs for a ride. She had to heave me right across her shoulder. 'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind."

Answer: Honky Tonk Women

Written by Jagger and Richards, "Honky Tonk Women" was first performed at a free concert played in Hyde Park in London. Although scheduled before the death of Brian Jones, it soon became a tribute to him, because it occurred shortly after his death.
Did you know that The Stones named themselves after a Muddy Waters song that was entitled "Rollin' Stone Blues"?
8. What was the #3 hit for the year 1969? "I can turn your gray sky blue. I could make it rain whenever I want it to. I can build a castle from a single grain of sand. I can make a ship sail on dry land. But my life is incomplete and I'm so blue, 'Cause I can't get next to you."

Answer: I Can't Get Next to You

The Temptations were formed by the merging of the groups The Primes, and Otis Williams and the Distants. They signed with Motown in 1961. This Whitfield/Strong song hit number one in both the Pop and the R&B charts. It is particularly pleasing to listen to because each line is sung by a different member of the group.
9. What was the #2 hit for the year 1969? "When the moon is in the Seventh House, And Jupiter aligns with Mars, Then peace will guide the planets, And love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the Age of ___________."

Answer: Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In

This song, from the musical stage show, "Hair", was the first and biggest number one hit for The Fifth Dimension, topping the charts for 6 weeks.
Both female members of the group were winners of The Miss Bronze Talent Show, and were coaxed into joining by member LaMonte McLemore, who had a job photographing contestants for the pageant.
10. What was the number one song for 1969? "Sugar, ah honey, honey, You are my candy girl, And you've got me wanting you. Honey, ah sugar, sugar, You are my candy girl, And you've got me wanting you."

Answer: Sugar, Sugar

Yes, I am embarassed to say that this song by The Archies reigned supreme in 1969. Don Kirshner (creator of the Monkees) made up this bubblegum group, based on the comic books and television cartoon of the same name. Written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, with vocals by Ron Dante, Andy Kim and Toni Wine, "Sugar, Sugar" was number one in the UK for over 2 months!
