Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pink Cadillac
Answer: Bruce Springsteen
"Pink Cadillac" (1984) was first recorded in 1982, then recorded again, this time with the E-Street Band during the production of Springsteen's "Born In The U.S.A." (1984) album, but wasn't included on the final list of tracks that made it on to the album.
It was taken into the charts by Natalie Cole, who covered the song in 1988, surprisingly, given that Springsteen had not allowed Bette Midler to release the track in 1983, saying in was gender inappropriate for a female to cover the track.
2. Four Door Aventador
Answer: Nicki Minaj
"Four Door Aventador" was a track from Nicki Manaj's 2014 album, "The Pinkprint", on which she manages to name check (Mercedes) Benz, Rolls Royce and McLaren cars, but not the Lamborghini Aventador.
The Aventador has also only ever been available in two door versions too, both the coupe and roadster models having scissor doors.
None of that bothers Miss Minaj though as she sings, "We in the funky four door, no floor".
3. From A Buick 6
Answer: Bob Dylan
A track from Dylan's 1965 album, "Highway 61 Revisited", "From A Buick 6" was mentioned by Steve Jobs in 2006 as his all time favourite song.
This is another song in which the car is not mentioned in the lyrics, merely in the title, but Dylan's delivery makes imagining the Buick being driven down a Mississippi Delta highway possible.
4. Little Red Corvette
Answer: Prince
From Prince's 1982 album, "1999" "Little Red Corvette" (1983) was a huge hit for him, hitting the top ten in UK, Australia, Canada and in USA on the Billboard Hot 100.
The track was covered (badly) by actress Rebecca De Mornay on the soundtrack to the 1985 movie, "The Slugger's Wife", a film about which I couldn't find a favourable review.
5. White Suburban
Answer: Skylar Grey
"White Suburban" (2013) was released as a single from Grey's album of the same year, "Don't Look Down".
While her first single from the album, "C'mon Let Me Ride" (2012) achieved respectable chart placings, this wasn't the case for the next two singles and when "White Suburban" was released as the fourth single, it disappeared without trace.
6. Purple Lamborghini
Answer: Skrillex and Rick Ross
When releasing a movie, the soundtrack is a great way of making extra cash. I'm guessing this was going through the minds of the team behind "Suicide Squad", a 2016 film from the DC Comics stable.
The first single, "Heathens" (2016) from Twenty One Pilots performed very well in charts, as did the second, "Sucker For Pain" (2016) by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons with Logic and Ty Dolla Sign featuring X Ambassadors.
Then came Skrillex and Rick Ross, with "Purple Lamborghini", which although it was nominated for a Grammy, couldn't crack the top 30 in UK, Australia or New Zealand, although it did make it to number 28 in Canada.
7. Cutlass
Answer: E-40 ft. B-Legit & Richie Rich
"Cutlass" is a track from E-40's 2012 album "The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 1"
E-40 loves his Cutlass, as he sings "Electric dash electric glass electric everything, Highly carburetted dual exhaust" and takes care of it too, telling us, "Fresh back from the car wash, Fresh back from a bathe, When the sun hits my paint it turns a different shade"
8. '92 Subaru
Answer: Fountains of Wayne
"'92 Subaru" is from the "Traffic and Weather" album, a 2007 release from Fountains Of Wayne.
The songs tells of the narrator buying the car from a pair of ladies in New Hampshire and improving it by adding new shock absorbers and anti lock brakes.
Not only do we know the make and model of the car from the song title, but the lyrics also reveal the colour with the line, "You better make way 'cause I'm coming through. In my late 92 baby-blue Subaru"
9. Trans Am
Answer: Neil Young and Crazy Horse
"Trans Am" is a track from Young's 1994 album, "Sleeps With Angels", which was the seventh album he recorded with Crazy Horse.
The track is a slow tempo song, which takes a look at America through the windows of an old Trans Am which eventually breaks down on Route 66, somewhere north of Barstow, California.
10. Mercedes Benz
Answer: Janis Joplin
"Mercedes Benz" (1970) was taken from the album of the same year, "Pearl", which was Joplin's second studio album, and released posthumously, three months after her death.
In the lyrics, Joplin asks the Lord to buy her a Mercedes Benz as "My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends". Interestingly, Joplin never did get to own a Mercedes Benz, but she the owner of a 1964 Porsche 356 C Cabriolet.
