Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what position are most B Flats played in when reading the bass clef?

Answer: First

This note can be played in fifth position, but it is most commonly played in first.
2. What is the alternate slide position to F (on the staff) played in the first position?

Answer: Sixth

Playing the F is sixth position is really useful when you have to go from F to C constantly, because they share the same position in the right octave.
3. Is the trombone a transposing instrument?

Answer: No

French Horns and trumpets are transposing instruments, trombones and tubas are not. The baritone horn is unusual - if it's written in the treble clef, it's transposing, and if it's written in the bass clef, it's not.
4. What is the B Flat below the staff called?

Answer: Pedal B Flat

It is called Pedal B Flat. It's usually only seen in bass trombone parts because it's harder to play with a tenor trombone! Don't try playing this note in the middle of a smile, it won't work!
5. What is the key that is on EVERY trombone?

Answer: Water Key

The water key, or commonly called the "spit valve". Its function is pretty obvious.
6. If your pitch is flat, which of the following would you NOT do to correct it?

Answer: Pull your tuning slide out

The first things you do with a pitch that is out of tune is change your embouchure and sit up properly to get a good air flow. After that you go to your tuning slide if it's still out of tune. If the pitch is flat, push in, if the pitch is sharp, pull out.

Another thing you could also do is adjust your slide position to make sure it is in the proper place, then try other things if it is still out of tune.
7. To take proper care of your trombone, how often SHOULD you disassemble it and soak the pieces in warm soapy water?

Answer: Once a month

Though many people do not do this, it is important to place the pieces of your trombone in warm water to help clean out the inside of the tubes.
8. If your trombone's tuning slide is very hard to move in order to tune, what should you put on it?

Answer: Tuning Slide Grease or Oil

You should always use things made especially for trombones in order to maintain them.
9. Which clef will you NOT see trombone music written in?

Answer: Percussion Clef

Depending on the type of trombone and what type of ensemble you're in, the music for trombone could be written in either the tenor, bass, or alto clefs.
10. What musical family is the trombone in?

Answer: Brass

Yeah, that one was fairly easy. No strings, you don't hit it, no reed and it was never made out of wood...yeah, it's brass. I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
