Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This rock performer had a tune titled "Bed of Nails" which was released on this "Trash" album from 1989. Can you guess who the artist is?

Answer: Alice Cooper

The "Trash" album was one of Alice Cooper's albums which received less critical acclaim, but still has some credible rock and roll music on it. Kane Roberts did a nice job taking on the lead guitar duties on this album, particularly on the album's more popular single "Poison".

The song was written by Cooper, Desmond Child and Diane Warren. A very interesting cover version of the song was recorded by death metal outfit Children of Bodom.
2. This fitting song title can be found on Johnny Cash's 1979 release "Tall Man". Can you name it?

Answer: Hammers and Nails

"Hammers and Nails" was released on Johnny Cash's 1979 album, "Tall Man". This was Cash's 61st album release. The album featured several of Cash's rarer singles or songs that were never released. "Hammers and Nails" was originally recorded in 1964 and featured The Statler Brothers accompanying Johnny Cash.
3. The soundtrack from the 1999 movie "Hi-Lo Country" featured a song which was performed by a rather unlikely pairing. Can you identify this strange duo?

Answer: Beck and Willie Nelson

The song appeared on the soundtrack, but was apparently cut out of the movie. The song was originally written and recorded by Jerry Irby in the 1940s, but it has been covered many times over the years. Two of my favorite renditions were from Ernest Tubb and Floyd Tillman.
Beck and Willie Nelson may seem like an odd pairing, but they have performed together over the years, most notably during the promotion for Farm Aid. They have appeared on "The Tonight Show" performing the Jimmie Rodgers' tune, "Peach Pickin' Time in Georgia" in 1997.
4. Kid Sister released a song titled "Pro Nails" on her debut album. Although the song gained a little success, it was the remixed version that most people remember. Which artist performed with Kid Sister on the remix of "Pro Nails"?

Answer: Kanye West

After Kanye West was introduced to Kid Sister from an acquaintance, he decided to include a remix of her song "Pro Nails" on his mix-tape titled "Can't Tell Me Nothing".
Kid Sister is a Chicago, Illinois based hip-hop artist who was born Melisa Young in 1980.
5. This progressive rock band released a song titled "Wedding Nails" on their 2002 album "In Absentia". Can you name the band?

Answer: Porcupine Tree

Steven Wilson, the brains and guitar player of Porcupine Tree, co-wrote the song "Wedding Nails" with Richard Barbieri for inclusion on their album "In Absentia". The song is a bit of a departure from the band's usual sound; "Wedding Nails" seems to have more of a gothic metal feel, more similar to Dream Theater or Fates Warning. Generally, progressive rock music is overlooked in the United States, but this album created a bit of a buzz and even ranked in at number 35 on the US Top Heatseekers chart.
6. "Nails in the Road" is a song recorded by The Pretenders in 1999. It is from their seventh studio album. Can you identify that record?

Answer: Viva el Amor!

I'm not going to say that the song "Nails in the Road" is the highlight of the album, but is a pretty solid Pretenders song, all in all. My favorite selection from the album is the song "Legalise Me" which featured Jeff Beck on lead guitar. The album cover for "Viva el Amor!" was taken by Chrissie Hynde's friend, Linda McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney.
7. This guitar playing madman recorded the song "Hard as Nails" on his 1980 release "Scream Dream". Do you remember who it was?

Answer: Ted Nugent

While most people remember the classics from "Scream Dream" like the title track and "Wango Tango", I sort of like the R&B influenced "Hard as Nails" and "Terminus Eldorado" a little better. Ted Nugent is a well known musician, hunter, activist and card carrying Republican who is equally known for his sharp tongue and opinions than his blistering guitar solos.

His career started way back in the 1960s and he has lived up to his reputation as a guitar hero ever since.
8. Can you complete the title of this Panic! At the Disco song? "Nails for Breakfast, ..."

Answer: Tacks for Snacks

Panic! At the Disco were formed in Las Vegas while their members were still in high school. Spencer Smith and Ryan Ross were covering punk and alternative songs when they decided they wanted to make their own music. After recruiting a few friends, they formed a full band and they yet to look back.

The song "Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks" is just an example of the band's creative song titles. The song is found on their album titled "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" from 2005.
9. This alternative band was formed in Minneapolis by guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould in 1979. One of their songs, "Bed of Nails" was released on the album "Warehouse: Songs and Stories". Can you name this often overlooked alternative band?

Answer: Husker Du

Bob Mould was the brains behind Husker Du, a band that has been in the shadows of other acts such as R.E.M., Pixies and The Replacements for years. Although Husker Du recorded several great albums, "Warehouse: Songs and Stories" was probably their greatest critical success, yet the least favorite of their fans.

Many true Husker Du fans consider the album to be overproduced with too many layers of dubbed guitars and vocals. Me, I think it's a fine album and several of the songs, including "Standing in the Rain", "She Floated Away" and even "Bed of Nails" are among my favorites.
10. Atreyu is a metal band from California who has a song which fits nicely in this quiz. The song is from the album "Congregation of the Damned" which was released in 2009. Can you name the song which fits the theme of this quiz?

Answer: Coffin Nails

Atreyu took a brief departure from the metalcore roots for this album and decided to produce something a little more melodic and less angry. For some fans, this was a nice deviation from the typical Atreyu recordings, but for many, the mellower sound was frowned upon.

The album wasn't considered a huge success compared to some of their previous albums, but there were a few high points. For instance, the song "Ravenous" was included in the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" video game. After the release of this album, the band took a bit of a hiatus and started dabbling in solo or side projects.
