Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the strings of the cello, in order, starting with the highest, and going down?

Answer: ADGC

The cello's strings are the same as the viola's. Violins have EADG, and basses have GDAE.
2. You know the bridge is in the proper place if it does what?

Answer: It stands, lined up, between the 'f' holes

The bridge should also be vertical, if you lay the cello on its back.
3. When you're sitting down and playing the cello, a good guide to see if it's at the right height is that the tuning peg for the C string is. . .?

Answer: Near your ear

If the tuning peg for the C string is at or right past your ear, you know that the end pin is pulled out to the correct height.
4. What does the endpin do?

Answer: It holds the cello in place and can be adjusted to adjust the height of the cello.

The endpin sticks out of the bottom of the cello to help keep it in place, and to make the cello come up higher on your body.
5. Which of these are useful in tuning smaller adjustments for the cello?

Answer: Fine tuners

Fine tuners make small adjustments, while tuning pegs (located on the scroll) make larger ones.
6. The following are parts of the cello. Only one answer lists the parts in order (from the top of the cello to the bottom). Pick that one.

Answer: Scroll, ribs, tail piece, endpin

The scroll is where the fine tuners are located, and where the strings come out. The ribs are the part of the cello that is curved in on the side; the tail piece is where the fine tuners are located and the strings stop; and the endpin was mentioned above.
7. Which could be the correct size of a cello?

Answer: Three-quarters size

The most common sizes are quarter, half, three quarters, and full size, although seven-eighths is also seen occasionally.
8. What is another name for a cello ('Cello' is actually short for this word)?

Answer: Violoncello

Most people simply refer to the instrument as a cello. In fact, I don't know anyone who calls it a violoncello anymore.
9. What kind of chair is best for a cello player to sit in?

Answer: A chair parallel to the ground, where, when you sit in it, your knees are at the same height as it.

You should never sit in a chair that slopes or is curved, because it ruins your posture.
10. How many major, two-octave scales can you play on the cello, without making a shift during the scale?

Answer: 3

Both three and four were excepted - C major, D major, and C-sharp or D-flat major. D-flat major is debatable because it begs for a half-step shift, but can possibly be played with a sort of double extension.
11. Which is the best cleaning method for your cello?

Answer: Wipe off with a VERY slightly damp cotton cloth once a week, and before performances.

Never use household cleaning products to clean your cello. If you wipe it off thoroughly, even with a dry cloth, it should stay very clean.
12. What is the correct plural of 'cello'?

Answer: celli

13. Where do the cello players normally sit in an orchestra?

Answer: When you're facing the stage, they should be on the edge of the stage, and to the right of the conductor.

I have also seen them placed behind the violas, which were placed at the front, to the conductor's left.
14. What is an extension for the cellist?

Answer: Widening the hand from its normal position in order to reach back or forward to be able to play extra notes.

My orchestra teacher compares this to palming a basketball. It can be painful, but it allows you to hit more notes.
15. What is the most important part of your body when you're playing the cello (if you want to make it sound pleasurable)?

Answer: Ear

Without your ear, you would be nowhere. You need it to stay in tune, and to improve your tone.
