Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Chaka Khan's name at birth?

Answer: Yvette Marie Stevens

Born March 23rd 1953, in the Illinois suburb of Great Lakes. Her sister is singer Taka Boom.
2. What does the name Chaka mean?

Answer: Woman of fire

Given to her by a Yoruba priest in the late 60s, her full name is; Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi. The surname Khan came after her first marriage.
3. Chaka was born to sing and formed her first group at a young age. What was it called?

Answer: The Crystalettes

She was only 11 years old at the time. Otherwise, she probably would have thought of a better name. The Primettes was the original name of the Supremes.
4. Chaka left school in 1969 and for a short time joined a group called Lyfe. She left that group to replace the lead singer in the soul band The Babysitters. Who did she replace?

Answer: Baby Huey

James Ramey (a.k.a. Baby Huey) was lead singer of The Babysitters and a popular draw in the Chicago area. He signed with Curtis Mayfields' Curtom label, but they didn't want the rest of the band. He recorded one album, 'The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend', but sadly, he passed away before it was released.
5. By 1973 Chaka had joined Rufus. Two of its members had belonged to this Chicago based rock band.

Answer: American Breed

Kevin Murphy (key boards) and André Fischer (drums) had both been members of American Breed (1968's "Bend me, Shape me") at one time or another.
6. Rufus had eight platinum albums during their career. Which of these did NOT go platinum?

Answer: Rufus

Their very first one didn't quite make it, but almost everything else Chaka sang on did. There were a total of 12 albums, (not including their greatest hits, which also went platinum). The albums that Chaka did not sing on, ("Numbers" (1979), "Party 'til You're Broke" (1981) and "Seal in Red" (1983) did not sell the required amount of copies to earn this honor.
7. Which Rufus album included the classic hit, 'Sweet Thing' ?

Answer: Rufus featuring Chaka Khan

Released in 1975, it was their fourth LP. This song is now one of Chaka's signature tunes.
8. By 1979 Chaka was more than ready to try some soloing. Her first album, "Chaka", included the hit 'I'm Every Woman' (later covered by Whitney Houston). Who wrote this classic gem?

Answer: Ashford and Simpson

Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson once wrote for Motown and have had several hits of their own over the years. Cissy Houston was lead singer of The Sweet Inspirations who did awesome background work for Aretha Franklin and many others (she is also Whitney's mother). Both Laura Nyro and Carly Simon are talented singer/songwriters.
9. What is the title of Chaka's second solo LP?

Answer: Naughty

Produced by Arif Mardin, this has some wonderful songs on it, two of them written by Ashford and Simpson.
10. One of my favorite songs on Chaka's second album is 'Papillon (aka Hot Butterfly)' But Chaka was not the first individual or group to record this song. Who was?

Answer: Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie

Gregg Diamond wrote this song and recorded it in the late 70s with Luther Vandross singing lead. Interestingly, Luther sings back-up on Chaka's version along with Whitney and Cissy Houston. If you listen closely towards the fade-out, you can recognize his distinctive voice.
11. Although she had a couple of solo efforts under her belt, Chaka was still contracted to do one more album with Rufus. What was it called?

Answer: Stompin' at the Savoy

This was a double album affair, most of it recorded live in New York in 1982. It included their last number one hit, 'Ain't Nobody'.
12. 'I Feel For You', was one of Chaka's biggest hits, but not one of her favorites, (mine either for that matter, but I digress,). Who wrote this little ditty?

Answer: Prince

Prince recorded this in 1979 on his self-titled second album (one of his best, in my opinion). Chaka has been quoted as saying she did not care for the added-on rap (Ch-Ch-Ch-Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan,) It does sound a bit dated and just a little cheesy if you ask me. Still, it was a huge hit.
13. Chaka's third solo album, 'What Cha' Gonna Do for Me', again produced by Arif Mardin, features a cover version (with added lyrics by Chaka and Arif) of a classic jazz standard. It even includes a famous sax solo by this man.

Answer: Charlie Parker

'And the Melody Still Lingers On (Night in Tunisia)', is the tune. Arif and Chaka turn it into a tribute to jazz greats of the 40s. She mentions Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Lester Young in the lyrics. Dizzy Gillespie is also featured: he wrote the song in 1942.
14. Chaka dipped into the jazz pool once again when she teamed up for a duet with this well-known jazz guitarist on his 1981 LP 'In Your Eyes'.

Answer: George Benson

Another Arif Mardin production (he must have been really busy!) The song is called, 'Love Will Come Again'. Beautiful guitar work by George, and great haunting vocals by Chaka.
15. Winner of many Grammy awards during her stellar career, she won this one in 1990 for a duet she shares with which well-known singer?

Answer: Ray Charles

The song was 'I'll Be Good to You', a big hit for The Brothers Johnson in 1976. Produced by Quincy Jones (both times) it went to number one on the R&B charts (both times).
