Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Jim Croce hit, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", Jim is described as a tough guy that everyone is afraid of. Who defeats Jim at the end of the song?

Answer: Slim

The lyrics, "You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.", are changed to "and you don't mess around with Slim." in the last chorus. Slim cuts up Jim for taking all his money in a pool game.
2. In the Elton John song "Bennie and the Jets", Elton sings of a fictional band and how they are seen by some of their fans. One of the fans describes Bennie as "really keen" and says that "She's got electric boots a mohair suit". Where did the fan get this information?

Answer: They read it in a magazine

The lyrics are as follows; "Oh Bennie she's really keen. She's got electric boots a mohair suit. You know I read it in a magazine. Bennie and the Jets." The song also deals with how musicians are marketed to kids as crazy and magical.
3. Another great fictional band are Willy and the Poor Boys from the Creedence Clearwater Revival song, "Down on the Corner". Four members of the band are mentioned in the song. They are - Rooster, Blinky, Poorboy, and Willy. What instrument is Rooster mentioned as playing in the song?

Answer: The washboard

A description of who plays what comes in the second verse. Here are the lyrics. "Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile. Blinky, thumps the gut bass and solos for a while. Poorboy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo. Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo." Willy is also mentioned as playing the harp in the first verse.
4. In the song "Pressed Rat and Warthog", Cream create almost fable-like characters reminiscent of Uncle Remus or The Brothers Grimm. They are described at one point in the song as follows; "Pressed Rat wore red jodhpurs, Warthog a striped tie." What are jodhpurs?

Answer: Pants primarily used for riding

Jodhpurs are basically riding pants used in horse riding which are close fitting from the knee to the ankle. The song is about Pressed Rat and Warthog's shop and how it was being closed down by the Bad Captain Madman. The song is basically an instrumental jam with drummer Ginger Baker reading this poetry over it.
5. In the classic song "Rocky Raccoon", Rocky goes off to look for his girl that ran off with another guy. What is the name of Rocky's rival?

Answer: Dan

The story states that Rocky went off to look for his girl who was taken by a guy that is mentioned as Dan, Danny and Daniel. He checks into a hotel, plans to shoot Dan, and Dan gets of the first round which hits Rocky and sends him off to the doctor.

This is a fun little song written by Paul McCartney. Paul seems to love playing with names as he uses all the forms of Dan as stated above, and describes Rocky's girl as "Her name was McGill and she called herself Lil But everyone knew her as Nancy."
6. The album "Tommy" by The Who was released in 1969 and is about a deaf, mute and blind boy who eventually breaks free of his handicap. In what year does the start of the story take place? Hint: It is the name of the third song on the album.

Answer: 1921

Even though the music is upbeat,"Tommy" is full of very dark imagery. The third song on the album, "1921", tells of how Tommy, after witnessing his mother's lover kill his father, becomes deaf, mute, and blind.
7. Bob Marley's song, "I Shot the Sheriff", tells of a man who says he shot a sheriff in self defence but did not shoot the deputy. What is the name of the sheriff who was shot?

Answer: John Brown

Sheriff John Brown is mentioned twice in the song. One of the times the sheriff is mentioned goes as follows; "All of a sudden I saw sheriff John Brown Aiming to shoot me down, So I shot - I shot - I shot him down and I say: If I am guilty I will pay."
8. Foreigner's "Jukebox Hero" is an unnamed young boy who becomes inspired to be a rock star. He can't get a ticket to a concert and puts his ear to the wall to listen. He then goes the very next day to the store to buy what?

Answer: A beat up six string in a secondhand store

The song tells the story of a young man's rise to fame as a rock hero. The verse mentioned above is as follows; "He heard one guitar, just blew him away He saw stars in his eyes, and the very next day. Bought a beat up six string in a secondhand store. Didn't know how to play it, but he knew for sure".
9. The Black Sabbath song "Iron Man" is about a time traveler who becomes enraged with humanity and seeks his revenge. According to the song, how did this person turn to steel?

Answer: In the great magnetic field

This song really has nothing to do with the Marvel Comic character. He is basically an evil character who spreads dread throughout humanity. The Lyrics about how he became Iron Man are as follows; "He was turned to steel, in the great magnetic field.

When he travelled time, for the future of mankind." Another interesting note is even though he is called Iron Man the song states he is made of steel and has lead boots.
10. In the Elton John tune "Levon", The title character is a cartoon balloon salesman. Who is Jesus in the song?

Answer: Levon's child

The quote in question from the song is as follows; "Levon wears his war wound like a crown. He calls his child Jesus. 'Cause he likes the name. And he sends him to the finest school in town." It is a song about Levon and his son and what kind of people they are. Levon feels as he has to keep working selling balloons as its a family tradition and he just wants to escape as does his son, Jesus.
