Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was not a member of Cold Chisel?

Answer: Michael Hutchence

Michael Hutchence was lead singer of another great Australian band, INXS.
2. What is the only song on the 'Chisel' album written by Phil Small?

Answer: 'My Baby'

Legend has it that Phil Small became so self-concious after the hit 'My Baby' that he never wrote another song after the song was released.
3. What was the first single released by Cold Chisel?

Answer: 'Khe Sahn'

Yes, the classic song 'Khe Sahn' was the first song released, and is still one of the most played songs on radio, despite the song is now 23 years old. Due to the content of the song (it's about the return of a Vietnam Vet. to Australia) it was banned from being played on radio.
4. Why is the song 'Bow River' an exaggeration?

Answer: It's only a small creek

Bow River is only a tiny creek, a small outpost between Kununurra and Hall's Creek. Ian Moss, the songwriter, who grew up in Alice Springs, wrote it as a dedication to the hardworking men of outback Australia.
5. A visit to which gaol inspired Don Walker to write the song 'Four Walls'?

Answer: Bathurst Correctional

Cold Chisel played anywhere, and played in many gaols in their time. The song is particularly inspired by the Bathurst gaol riots of 1978.
6. How many nights did Cold Chisel play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on their 'Last Stand' tour?

Answer: 5

Although now the record has been broken, Cold Chisel set the first benchmark during their 'Last Stand' tour. The first show was played in October but Barnes then suffered a throat infection, causing the band to play the final four nights in December.
7. Name the song - 'Kids are driving Saturday afternoon just pass me by....'

Answer: 'Flame Trees'

'Flame Trees', written by Don Walker, is written in tribute in Walker's home town of Grafton, the 'Jacaranda City', hence the title of the song.
8. 'Star Hotel' is written about an actual hotel in Newcastle that was closed, mostly due to economic problems. In which year was the hotel closed?

Answer: 1979

The hotel was closed on Wednesday, September 19, 1979. The closure took place amid massive riots as youths and police fought it out in the streets surrounding the hotel. The hotel has since reopened (something I only found out when travelling to Newcastle a few years back.)
9. Name the song - 'Take a whole lot of loneliness, wrap it up in some tenderness..'

Answer: 'Forever Now'

Written by Steve Prestwich and appeared on the album 'Circus Animals'.
10. Written by Jimmy Barnes, who is 'Rising Sun' dedicated to?

Answer: His wife

The flip-side song to 'Cheap Wine', it is a simple song by Barnes in dedication to Jane, who was to become his wife. The song appeared on the band's album 'East', the first album in which all five band members contributed material.
