Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1967, where was Roger Miller walking?

Answer: In the Sunshine

Roger's 1967 hit, "Walkin' In the Sunshine" made the top 40 in both US Billboard charts and the Australian pop charts.
Roger Miller was known as a comedy singer due to such songs as "Dang Me" and "You Can't Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd", but was also well-respected as a serious act with songs like this and "King of the Road".
2. Marc Cohn made a famous city even more famous when he went walking in it in 1991. Where was he walking?

Answer: Memphis

"Walking In Memphis" was Marc Cohn's biggest hit, released in 1991 and taken from his self-titled first album. Cohn, a self-confessed "a Jewish gospel-music-lover" stated the song was "100 percent autobiographical".
3. Which group had a huge instrumental hit with "Walk, Don't Run" in 1960?

Answer: The Ventures

The Ventures released "Walk, Don't Run" in 1960, and re-released the song in 1964, 1968 and 1977. They were still performing together well into the 2000s!
4. Who did The Left Banke tell to walk away in 1966?

Answer: Renee

The Left Banke had the original hit with "Walk Away, Renee" in 1966. The classic song was covered by The Temptations in 1967, Australian singer Rick Price in 1992, "Ally McBeal" singer Vonda Shepard in 1998, amongst a host of others.
5. Redgum's anti-Vietnam War song, "I Was Only 19", released in 1983, was actually properly titled what (to fit in with our "walking" theme)?

Answer: I Was Only 19 (A Walk In the Light Green)

The "light green" in the title referred to the topographical maps used in the military, where dark green denoted jungle areas, and light green was areas of sparse foliage. Lead singer of Redgum, John Schumann, was prompted to write the song after listening to the stories of the Vietnam War from friends of his.
6. Helen Shapiro must have really enjoyed this place, because she sang about walking back to there in 1961.

Answer: Happiness

"Walking Back To Happiness" was possibly Helen Shapiro's biggest hit. The teenaged Shapiro was so popular in the early 60s that her opening act on one British tour was none other than The Beatles!
7. Horst Jankowski had an unlikely hit in 1965, when he released an instrumental celebrating his walk where?

Answer: In the Black Forest

"A Walk In the Black Forest" was titled "Eine Schwarzwaldfahrt", but was translated and renamed for the British and US markets.
Horst Jankowski was a classically trained pianist who passed away in 1998 from lung cancer.
8. Michael Jackson sang about what type of walker in 1987?

Answer: Street

"Streetwalker" was recorded by Michael Jackson in 1987, but wasn't released until the re-issue of the "Bad" album in 2001.
"Bad" was the long-awaited follow-up album to the amazing "Thriller" album, released 5 years earlier.
9. Easy one - Where did Lou Reed walk in 1972?

Answer: On the Wild Side

He quite possibly did all of the options mentioned, but most famously, he would take a "Walk On the Wild Side". Taken from the "Transformer" album, it defined Lou Reed's solo career.
10. In 1986, The Bangles encouraged us all to walk like ....?

Answer: An Egyptian

"Walk Like An Egyptian" was a huge hit in 1986, even though I highly doubt that the ancient Egyptians (or even the modern ones, for that matter) ever did actually walk in such a manner.
The Bangles originally called themselves "The Bangs". Thankfully, they saw the light...
