Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "These Boots Are Made For Walking"

Answer: Nancy Sinatra

"These boots are made for walking
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you."

Released in February 1966, this was a Number One hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the UK singles charts. The song was covered by numerous other artists and was also on the soundtrack of a wide variety of movies and TV shows.
2. "I Walk The Line"

Answer: Johnny Cash

"I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line."

Written by Cash, in 1956 it became his first chart topper - reaching Number One on the Billboard hot country charts. It was Number 17 on the Hot 100 pop charts. Cash claimed to have written the song in just 20 minutes.
3. "Walk On By"

Answer: Dionne Warwick

"If you see me walking down the street
And I start to cry each time we meet
Walk on by, walk on by."

With lyrics by Hal David and music by Burt Bacharach, the song reached Number Six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Years later, Bacharach described Warwick as "our artist and our flagship". The Bacharach/David writing team and the voice of Warwick generated 15 top-40 singles between 1962 and 1968.
4. "Walk Like An Egyptian"

Answer: The Bangles

"All the school kids so sick of books,
They like the punk and the metal band.
When the buzzer rings,
They're walking like an Egyptian."

The song topped the charts in eleven countries and was the top selling single on the Billboard yearly charts for 1987.
5. "Walk Of Life"

Answer: Dire Straits

"Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say
Here comes Johnny singing I Gotta Woman
Down in the tunnels trying to make it pay
He got the action, he got the motion
Yeah the boy can play
Dedication devotion
Turning all the night time into the day

He do the song about the sweet loving woman
He do the song about the knife
He do the walk, he do the walk of life"

Initially released as a B-side, it was promoted to A-side for a new single that reached Number Two in the UK and Billboard Hot 100 Number Seven in the USA in 1986.
6. "Walk Tall"

Answer: Val Doonican

"Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye
That's what my mama told me when I was about knee high
She said son, be a proud man and hold your head up high
Walk tall, walk straight and look the world right in the eye"

Written by Don Wayne, the song reached Number Three in the UK for the Irish singer Val Doonican in 1964. This was Doonican's breakthrough to the big time after years of touring and gigging in his native Ireland. He was to go on to become one of the UK's most popular entertainers. His relaxed style produced undemanding listening and he hosted a long series of popular TV shows.
7. "Walking Back To Happiness"

Answer: Helen Shapiro

"Walking back to happiness
Said goodbye to loneliness
I never knew I'd miss you
Now I know what I must do
Walking back to happiness I shared with you."

This was a UK Number One for Helen Shapiro in 1961 and sold over a million copies. It just about reached the Billboard Hot 100 (at Number 100.) Despite the American cold-shoulder, it reached the top ten in eleven countries. Shapiro, by background a jazz singer, had a successful career in pop music between 1961 and 1967. She had one other UK Number One, "You Don't Know", also in 1961.
8. "Walking On Sunshine"

Answer: Katrina & The Waves

"I used to think maybe you loved me, now, baby, I'm sure
And I just can't wait till the day when you knock on my door
Now every time I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down
'Cause I just can't wait till you write me you're coming around

Now I'm walking on sunshine, whoa
I'm walking on sunshine, whoa
I'm walking on sunshine, whoa
And don't it feel good..."

Released in 1985, the song reached Number Nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number Eight in the UK.
As a band Katrina And The Waves traced their roots to England but it was in Canada that they began to find recognition. Their single ""Love Shine a Light" won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997.
9. "Walk On The Wild Side"

Answer: Lou Reed

Got you all at it haven't I: "Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.."

"Holly came from Miami F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side,
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side."

Now considered a rock standard, the lyrics were somewhat risqué for the time and touched on a number of taboo subjects. This was a top 30 hit for Reed in both the USA and UK in 1972 (although it peaked at just 100 in Australia.) It was to be Reed's best performance in the singles charts, although a cover of his "A Perfect Day" sung by a cornucopia of stars was a UK Number One charity single in 1997.
10. "You'll Never Walk Alone"

Answer: Gerry & The Pacemakers

"Walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone..."

This was a Number One UK hit for the Liverpool outfit in 1963. It also topped the Australian charts.
Written for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel" (1945), the song was covered by a wide range of singers. Among them were Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Frankie Vaughan and Judy Garland. It also became the 'theme song' for Liverpool Football Club, as well as for several other European sides.
