Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Imagine a still summer's day; when nothing is moving'

Answer: The Day I Met Marie

The song was written by Hank Marvin, lead guitarist of Cliff's backing group, The Shadows. It reached number ten on the UK Singles Chart in 1967. The lyrics tell of a chance meeting with the 'Marie' of the title while the singer is half asleep. It may even be a dream.
2. 'You love me like a hurricane; then you start to freeze'

Answer: Please Don't Tease

This was a number one on the UK Singles Chart for Cliff in 1960, and was written by Bruce Welch, the rhythm guitarist for The Shadows, with Pete Chester. As you can tell from the snippet of lyrics, the singer is puzzled by the way his girlfriend blows hot and cold in their relationship.
3. 'Smoking, drifting, lazily drifting; my darling, I miss you so'

Answer: Visions

'Visions of you; in shades of blue' are the opening lines, which are followed by the ones I gave you as a clue. 'Visions' was written by Paul Ferris, who mainly composed music for British horror films. Cliff's single came out in 1966 and gave him a number seven hit on the UK Singles Chart.
4. 'Who could believe that I could be happy and contented'

Answer: Congratulations

Cliff sang 'Congratulations' as the UK's entry to the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest, in which he came second, losing by one point to the entry from Spain. This hardly mattered, as the song was a huge hit for him, reaching number one on the respective singles' charts of Ireland, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, the UK and, perhaps ironically, Spain itself.

Cliff had another try at winning the contest five years later, when 'Power to All our Friends' finished third.
5. 'They say it's gonna die, but honey please let's face it'

Answer: Move It

These are lyrics from Cliff's very first single, released in 1958, when The Shadows were still The Drifters, before changing their name to make sure they weren't confused with the American band of that name. Written by Ian Samwell, the song went to number two on the UK Singles Chart.
6. 'No more worries for me or you; for a week or two'

Answer: Summer Holiday

The song appeared in the film, also called 'Summer Holiday', which starred Cliff and The Shadows and came out in 1963. The song was written by two of The Shadows, Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett, the band's drummer. Cliff spent two weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart with this song in March, before being displaced by 'Foot Tapper', an instrumental from the film by The Shadows for a week. 'Summer Holiday' then had one further week at number one.
7. 'When I was sixteen I fell in love; with a girl as sweet as can be'

Answer: Bachelor Boy

'Bachelor Boy', with songwriting credits given to Cliff and Bruce Welch, was another song from the 'Summer Holiday' film. It was released as a double A side back in the days when records had two sides, with 'The Next Time' being the other song featured. The record was another number one hit on the UK Singles Chart for Cliff, in January 1963.
8. 'I met a girl and she told me she loved me; I said you love me then love means you must like what I like'

Answer: Wired for Sound

'Wired for Sound' was one of Cliff's later hits, from 1981, with the video issued to support the song showing him on roller skates, listening to that brand new invention, the Sony Walkman. Written by Alan Tarney and B. A. Robertson, no stranger to UK chart success himself, the song managed number four on the UK Singles Chart.
9. 'I'm gonna lock her up in a trunk so no big hunk; can steal her away from me'

Answer: Living Doll

'Living Doll' gave Cliff his first number one on the UK Singles Chart, with The Shadows being credited as The Drifters for the final time before their name change. Dating from 1959, the song was written by Lionel Bart, who also composed the musical 'Oliver!'.

A second visit to number one came in 1986 when Cliff re-recorded the song for the Comic Relief charity with the 'assistance' of the cast from the television series 'The Young Ones'.
10. 'Once in every lifetime; comes a love like this; I need you and you need me; oh my darling can't you see'

Answer: The Young Ones

Another song from a film starring Cliff, 'The Young Ones' was a major hit for him in 1962, spending six weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart. The film had the same name in the UK, but was released in the USA under the title 'It's Wonderful to be Young'.

The song, and its name, were used by Ben Elton, Rik Mayall and Lise Mayer for the comedy series starring Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan, which had two series on BBC2 in the early 1980s.
