Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1960, Cliff Richard reached number 14 in the Billboard charts with an EP (Extended Play) featuring songs from which film?

Answer: Expresso Bongo

'Expresso Bongo' starred Laurence Harvey as a talent agent, and Cliff's character was called 'Bert Rudge', later renamed 'Bongo Herbert' neither of which sounds much like star material. The film was set in the sleazy clubs of Soho and released in 1959. 'Finders Keepers' was from 1966, 'The Young Ones' from 1961 and 'Summer Holiday' from 1959.
2. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote which of these Cliff Richard hits from the 1960s?

Answer: Blue Turns to Grey

This reached number 15 in 1966. 'Marianne' might have caught you out, as Marianne Faithfull was Mick's girlfriend around this time. 'On My Word' made number 12 in 1965, 'I'll Come Running' only reached number 26 and 'Marianne' peaked at number 12 in 1965. The Rolling Stones featured the song on their 1965 album 'December's Children (And Everybody's)'.
3. Cliff Richard had a number 11 hit in 1990 with 'From a Distance', but the song is mostly associated with which of the following divas?

Answer: Bette Midler

Bette took the song to number 6 in the UK charts and to number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was written in 1985 by Julie Gold, and recorded by Nanci Griffith in 1987. It won a Grammy in 1991 for Song of the Year.
4. Cliff Richard reached number 15 in 1980 with 'Suddenly', a duet with which female singer?

Answer: Olivia Newton-John

The other singers were all around at the time, but it was Olivia who sang with Cliff on this and they also had a (minor) hit together in 1995 with 'Had to Be', reaching number 22. Olivia also had hits with John Travolta and the Electric Light Orchestra.
5. This 1976 hit of Cliff's reached only number 15, although it feels like a much bigger hit. I don't want you to miss this one, so lay down and get the right answer.

Answer: Miss You Nights

I was surprised to find this was such a minor hit, as I'd have guessed this was at least top five. 'Lay down all thoughts of your surrender' are just some of the lyrics, and it is a typical 'wave your lighters in the air' stadium song. It was re-released in 1994 jointly with 'All I Have to Do is Dream', but still did not crack the top ten.
6. In 1981, Cliff Richard hit number 15 with 'A Little' - what?

Answer: In Love

'A Little Respect' was a number 4 Erasure hit in 1988 and 'A Little Bit More' reached number 2 for Dr Hook in 1992. 'A Little More Love' is our old friend Olivia Newton-John from 1978 when it reached number 4.
7. 'I hear your accusations, darling, and my reply is hard to find' are the opening lines of which of the following Cliff Richard hits?

Answer: She's So Beautiful

'She's So Beautiful' made number 17 in 1985. I hope you didn't choose 'Little Town', which is a version of the Christmas carol 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' although not quite to the tune I learned at Sunday school. 'Remember Me' is a number 35 Cliff hit from 1987 and 'Lean on You' reached number 17 in 1989.
8. In 1994, Cliff Richard had his second hit with Phil Everly. Which Everly Brothers hit did they cover?

Answer: All I Have to Do is Dream

This reached number 14 jointly with a version of 'Miss You Nights'. The other songs are all Everly Brothers hits from the 1960's. 'All I Have to Do is Dream' was a number one hit in 1958 for Phil and brother Don.
9. Cliff charted in 1989 with another duet. The song was 'Whenever God Shines His Light' and was sung with which Irish performer?

Answer: Van Morrison

Van wrote the song and it appeared on his album 'Avalon Sunset'. The duo reached number 20 with this. I have not found any evidence of Cliff collaborations with the other three singers - at least, not yet.
10. Cliff Richard had another double-sided hit in 2001, reaching number 12. 'What a Wonderful World' was one of the songs. The other was which of these, associated with a film?

Answer: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Judy Garland's showstopper from 'The Wizard of Oz', of course. 'Maria' is from 'West Side Story', 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is from 'Carousel' and was a huge hit for 'Gerry and the Pacemakers' and 'Sandy' is one of John Travolta's hits from 'Grease'.
