Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, let's start form the beginning. Counting Crows first hit single, the one that launched them into the spotlight, was entitled?

Answer: Mr. Jones

Lead singer and songwriter, Adam Duritz, named the song after his best friend Marty Jones. He and Marty were at a bar drinking, looking at "all of the beautiful women", and wishing that they were famous, so that all of these women would want them, and the inspiration for the song was born.
2. What was the title of Counting Crows' first album?

Answer: August and Everything After

"August and Everything After" was the name of a song that Adam had written, but never recorded. He was born in August, and it is symbolic of his birth and his life. Some of the lyrics of this song can be seen on the album cover.
3. Which of these is NOT a lyric from the Counting Crows' first hit single?

Answer: "My eyes could never ever keep their cool."

This is from a Red Hot Chili Peppers song. "Mr. Jones" was the most frequently played radio song of 1993, so you probably still have these lyrics stuck in your head, even if you don't want them there.
4. This early demo song got frequent airplay after Counting Crows acheived mainstream success, despite the fact that the song wasn't on their debut album?

Answer: Einstein on the Beach

Their record label decided not to put it on "August and Everything After", because they felt that it was too upbeat, and didn't fit the tone of the rest of the album. Instead, they released it on an album entitled, "DGC Rarities".
5. In which city did the members of Counting Crows meet and begin performing?

Answer: San Francisco

Adam lived in Berkeley, California when he met San Francisco record producer and guitarist David Bryson. They began collaborating, and later added the rest of the band members.
6. In 1996, Counting Crows released their second album, and scored another smash hit with this haunting tune, the video for which featured Courtney Cox?

Answer: A Long December

Adam and Courtney were a couple at the time, though the relationship didn't last. If you listen to Adam's lyrics, you'll see that that is par for the course.
7. Counting Crows released their third album in 1999, which I believe is their masterpiece. Unfortunately for them, I don't represent the masses, and it was the least commercially successful of their albums. It did spawn one hit song, though. What was it?

Answer: Hanginaround

The bosses at their record label also felt that another song, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby", was a surefire hit if Adam would agree to edit it down to radio length (the song is 8 minutes long). Adam refused.
8. Counting Crows again scored a hit in 2002 with a remake of the Joni Mitchell classic, "Big Yellow Taxi". Which pop singer sang background vocals on this song?

Answer: Vanessa Carlton

The song has a long history of being recorded by very diverse artists from Bob Dylan to Janet Jackson to Amy Grant.
9. Have Counting Crows ever released a "Greatest Hits" album?

Answer: Yes

In December 2003, the band released their greatest hits album, entitled "Films About Ghosts".
10. Where does the name Counting Crows come from?

Answer: an old English divination rhyme

The rhyme suggests that, "life is as pointless as counting crows".
