Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a greatest hits album, the track list of "Direct Hits" featured songs from other albums. How many previously released albums by The Killers were included on "Direct Hits"?

Answer: 4

The Killers debut album, "Hot Fuss", was released in 2004. Songs from their debut were included on their greatest hits album, as well as tracks from "Sam's Town" (2006), "Day and Age" (2008), and "Battle Born" (2012).

The band also released a different compilation album in 2007. The track list to "Sawdust" was made of B-sides, covers, remixes, and previously unreleased songs. "Live from the Royal Albert Hall" was a live album with songs that The Killers performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as some performances at festivals in the same year. It was released in 2009.
2. "Direct Hits" features The Killers' first ever single. Which title completes the lyric? "Open up my eager eyes, cause I'm..."

Answer: Mr Brightside

All of the choices were singles released in 2004, but "Mr Brightside" was the one that was written and recorded by The Killers. The lyrics tell the story of a man who believes his partner is cheating on him: "Now they're going to bed/ And my stomach is sick/ And it's all in my head".

It consists of a verse and a chorus, both of which are repeated once. One of the videos for the song (there were two) was reminiscent of the 2001 film, Moulin Rouge!, which followed a similar plot.
3. Which psychic-sounding song was a "Direct Hit" from 2006's "Sam's Town"?

Answer: Read My Mind

The lyrics to "Read My Mind" are like a series of vignettes. Each section of the song hints at a scene, some of which are more obscure than others. The listener has to put the fragments together to read the narrator's mind. The words seem to reflect the thoughts of someone desperate to leave their "two-star town".

The track ends with the beautiful line, "The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun/ when you read my mind."
4. Which of these first lines was the opening line to "When You Were Young"?

Answer: You sit there in your heartache

"You sit there in your heartache" is the first line of "When You Were Young", followed by "Waiting on some beautiful boy to/ To save your from your old ways." The track was a single on "Sam's Town" before it was included on The Killer's greatest hits album.

"Is this the real life?" is the opening line to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Ground Control to Major Tom" is from David Bowie's "Space Oddity". The Beatles' song "Yellow Submarine" begins with "In the town where I was born".
5. One of the tracks on "Direct Hits" was featured in an episode of "Fringe", and the trailer to the 2009 animated movie, "Planet 51". The film was about an astronaut who landed on an alien planet, so which song by The Killers did they pick?

Answer: Spaceman

"Planet 51" starred Dwayne Johnson and Jessica Biel. The Killers' "Spaceman" was included towards the end of one of the movie's trailers. The space-themed lyrics that can be heard in the trailer were "The star maker says, it ain't so bad/ The dream maker's going make you mad/ The spaceman says, everybody look down/ It's all in your mind." The single was originally on the 2008 album "Day and Age".

While the other three options are also songs by The Killers, none of them are on "Direct Hits". Even though "Bones" was released as a single from "Sam's Town", it was not included on their greatest hits album.
6. A couple of the tracks on "Direct Hits" were unique to the greatest hits album and had not been released before. Which ones were they?

Answer: "Shot at the Night" and "Just Another Girl"

"Shot at the Night" was the lead single from "Direct Hits" and "Just Another Girl" was the second one from the album. They were both released in 2013.

The music video for "Just Another Girl" was nostalgic about The Killer's history. It featured actor Dianna Agron dressed as The Killers singer Brandon Flowers in a variety of the band's music videos. At the start, she was wearing the feathered jacket that Flowers wore in the video for "Humans". Although the original "Humans" video was filmed on location in Goblin Valley State Park, in "Just Another Girl", the band were playing on a set covered in sand with a desert landscape being projected in the background. Agron walked off the set, put on a false moustache, and walked through the wedding scene in the video of "When You Were Young". She played out scenes in many of the band's popular videos and even walked past the photo shoot for the "Sam's Town" album cover.
7. Which of these lyrics were in the track "The Way It Was?"

Answer: Maybe a thief stole your heart/ Or maybe we just drifted apart/ I remember driving/ In my daddy's car to the airfield

"The Way It Was" was taken from the 2012 album "Battle Born". It wasn't a single after either album release, but in an NME interview in 2013, Brandon Flowers reflected that it "probably should've been a single" on "Battle Born". The band decided to include it on their greatest hits album because they all loved the song.

The other lyrics all have the song they came from in their lyrics: "Somebody Told Me", "Miss Atomic Bomb", and "Bones".
8. One of the singles featured on "Direct Hits" topped a Blinkbox survey as the weirdest song lyric of all time. Which Killers lyric caused confusion on the internet and at radio stations when the single was released?

Answer: Are we human? Or are we dancer?

Dancer, dancers, or denser? Debate raged over how the line ended. I remember listening to Kerrang! Radio in the UK the week that "Humans" was released; they asked listeners to phone in with their suggestions as to what the lyric actually was. The band confirmed that the word was indeed "dancer", despite the fact that it was ungrammatical. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Brandon Flowers claimed that "It's supposed to be a dance song, it goes with the chorus."

"I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob" is from The Beatles' song "I Am the Walrus" and came second in the survey.
9. In which "Direct Hits" song could you see "Cinderella in a party dress", a "slick chrome American prince", and "Castles in the sky"?

Answer: A Dustland Fairytale

"A Dustland Fairytale" was a single that was first released on "Day & Age". In a 2013 NME interview, Brandon Flowers stated that the song is a "personal narrative". The "Cinderella" in the song represents Flowers' mother and his father is the "slick chrome American prince". Flowers was born and raised in and around the Mojave Desert - the relationship between his parents was "A Dustland Fairytale".
10. Three of the songs on "Direct Hits" were one-word titles. "Human" and "Spaceman" were two of them. Which word was the other one-word title on the album?

Answer: Runaways

"Runaways" was another one-word title from "The Killers". It was originally released in 2012 as the lead single on the album "Battle Born". The 1984 song "Ghostbusters" was written by Ray Parker Jr for the movie of the same name. "Macarena" was a one-hit wonder of the 1990s, though it's still popular at discos and parties (it was played at our wedding reception 25 years after it was first released). Like "Runaways", "Radioactive" was released in 2012, but not by The Killers.

It was a single on Imagine Dragons' debut album.
