David Draiman, Disturbed's lead singer, is of Jewish ancestry, although he does not practice the religion. He has said in interviews that he is deeply disturbed by displays of anti-Semitism. He has said he takes issue with musicians who collect Nazi memorabilia.

During the hiatus, band members worked on side projects. This included David Draiman's industrial metal band Device with Geno Lenardo, the former guitarist for the band Filter. They released one self-titled album before Draiman got back with Disturbed.

The lead single for the album is called "The Vengeful One".
