Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the age of just 14, Badu was already on the radio freestyling regularly. Which of these musical artists beat-boxed alongside her?

Answer: Roy Hargrove

Badu landed the freestyling gig at one of her area's local radio stations, then known as KNON. Badu and Hargrove were briefly part of the same rap group while they both attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in downtown Dallas, Texas. Hargrove ended up establishing a name for himself as a successful trumpeter. Hargrove has worked with many successful musicians, and he was also the leader of the band The RH Factor. Hargrove won his first Grammy with his own band Crisol for their 1998 album, "Habana," which won the award for Best Latin Jazz Performance.
2. Erykah Badu's career perhaps first showed promise after opening for which of these neo-soul pioneers in Badu's own hometown?

Answer: D'Angelo

Badu performed for D'Angelo in 1994 in Dallas, Texas. After the show, an impressed Kedar Massenburg of Kedar Entertainment signed Badu and soon after Badu and D'Angelo together performed a rendition of "Precious Love," a duet originally performed by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Massenburg has since gained notoriety for both discovering the talented Badu and coining the term "neo-soul," which he used to describe Badu's music among the work of other musicians. One of the results of her business with Massenburg was the breakup of Erykah Free, which was a rap group that Badu participated in with her cousin Free.
3. OutKast's hit single "Ms. Jackson" was inspired by André 3000's relationship with Erykah Badu.

Answer: True

"Ms. Jackson" is the second single from OutKast's fourth studio album, "Stanktonia." "Stanktonia" also featured Badu in the song "Humble Mumble." According to André in one of his interviews, he based the song title on Badu's mother, who is given the title of "Ms. Jackson." "Ms. Jackson" provides a fictionalized portrayal of Badu and André's relationship that ended in 2000, and the track stands as an apology to Badu's mother for hurting her daughter.

A child named Seven Sirius was born between the two artists in 1997. On one occasion, when asked about where the name came from, Badu simply explained that it "is a divine number which cannot be divided."
4. According to articles interviewing Erykah Badu, which of her songs was about the death of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed Guinean immigrant who was shot and killed by four NYPD officers?

Answer: A.D. 2000

On February 4, 1999, four undercover cops in the Bronx killed Diallo after shooting him 19 times. All four of the cops were later acquitted, and because Diallo didn't have any sort of weapon on him, many citizens were outraged. The case brought out issues involving racial profiling and the use of excessive violence by police.

Other musical acts who have made supposed references to the incident include singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, reggae artist Ziggy Marley, and heavy metal band Trivium.
5. Erykah Badu has won a number of Grammys throughout her career. Which of these songs did not win Badu one of these illustrious awards but instead lost to a number off Lauryn Hill's breakthrough album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill?"

Answer: Tyrone

"You Got Me," a song by The Roots featuring Badu singing the chorus, was on the hip-hop group's album "Things Fall Apart," and it won a Grammy in 2000 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Badu also won a Grammy for both "On & On" in 1998 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)" in 2003 for Best R&B Song. "Tyrone" was nominated for a Grammy in 1999 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance but lost to "Doo Wop (That Thing)" by Lauryn Hill on her first solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."
6. Badu's single "The Healer" starts with a mesmerizing hook, one that may at first not even sound like real words. Which of these words for "God" is not included in the chant?

Answer: Christ

The hook starts with "Alhamdulillah Allah Jehovah / Yahweh Dios Ma'at Jah / Rastafari fyah dance / Sex, music, hip-hop / It's bigger than religion / Hip-hop." Dios is a Spanish term for God, Allah is an Arabic term for God, and Jehovah is a Hebrew term for God.

The song "The Healer" was produced by Madlib, and it is featured on Badu's fourth studio album, "New Amerykah Part One: (4th World War)," which was released in 2008. The song essentially emphasizes the power and influence of hip-hop music.

When asked about the song, Badu was quoted saying that to her, "hip-hop is felt in all religions. It has a healing power." Badu added that she had "recently been to Palestine, Jerusalem, Africa and a bunch of other places, and everyone is listening to hip-hop."
7. One of the music videos for a song off Erykah Badu's album "New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh" was not only controversial due to a display of public nudity, but also because it was perceived as disrespectful to which of these historical figures?

Answer: John F. Kennedy

In the video for her hit single "Window Seat", Badu is seen naked in front of minors, and the artist did all of this without the necessary permission from city officials. Badu's music video actually sparked such a controversy that police ended up issuing the artist a class C misdemeanor citation for disorderly conduct in 2010.

The uncut music video depicted a stripping Badu walking down sidewalk in Dallas, Texas and ended with a gunshot sound, to which Badu responds by falling down in the same area that U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Badu argues, however, that this video was not meant to be disrespectful. According to her, people were completely misinterpreting it. Badu claims that it was instead a music video speaking out against "groupthink," an idea in the field of social psychology.
8. Erykah Badu's "Telephone" references the allegedly true hallucinations of which musical artist?

Answer: J Dilla

Badu talked about this in several different interviews. According to J Dilla's mother, Dilla would hallucinate often, and in one instance her son told her that ODB of the Wu-Tang Clan, who had already passed away at the time, was talking to him. According to Dilla, ODB told him which bus to get on once he crosses over to the afterlife. "Telephone" was written as a tribute to Dilla after Badu heard of his passing. "Telephone" starts with the following lines: "Telephone / It's Ol' Dirty / He wants to give you directions home / Says it won't be too long." The track was featured on "New Amerykah Part One: (4th World War)."
9. On February, 28, 2012, one of Badu's upcoming international concerts, one that was supposed to be held the following night, was canceled after a controversial photo of Badu was published in a local newspaper. The photo was deemed offensive to which of these groups of people?

Answer: Muslims

Badu sparked an uproar in Malaysia after a photo surfaced in a newspaper called "The Star" of Badu baring the word "Allah" in Arabic on her body in the form of two temporary tattoos. This was seen as offensive and inappropriate, and many members of the Muslim community felt slighted by the casual use of Allah in something related to entertainment.

In a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur on the day of the concert, Badu was quoted saying, "Art is often misunderstood in the realm of religion. Art can't be censored by anyone."
10. According to the lyrics in Erykah Badu's song "Green Eyes," why are Badu's eyes green?

Answer: Because she "eats a lot of vegetables"

Throughout the first part of "Green Eyes," Badu repeats "My eyes are green / Cause I eat a lot of vegetables / It don't have nothing to do with your new friend." The track is from Badu's second studio album, "Mama's Gun," which was released in 2000. Similar to OutKast's "Ms. Jackson," Badu drew inspiration from her relationship with OutKast's André Benjamin when writing the song. "Green Eyes" is essentially a three-part song about handling a breakup.
