Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in 1956. Do you remember which country was the host of that year's contest?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland was awarded the honour to host the first Eurovision Song Contest ever. Since 1957, the EBU - European Broadcasting Union - uses the system that has the winner of an edition organising the next edition.
2. Cliff Richard, the famous British singer, competed in the contest twice. Once he came second, another time he came third. Which song gave him the bronze medal?

Answer: Power To All Our Friends

Cliff Richard first entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968. However, he failed to win the contest in his home country, with the song 'Congratulations'. In 1973, he came back for a second attempt. 'Power To All Our Friends', which he performed together with The Shadows, came third. Both songs grew out to become evergreens.
3. In 2003, Belgium finished second with the song 'Sanomi'. The Belgians, competing since 1956, ended up second one time before. What year was that?

Answer: 1978

In 1978, Belgium finished second with 'L'Amour Ça Fait Chanter La Vie', sung by Jean Vallée. He was awarded 125 points for his chanson. Israel won the contest with 'A Ba Nee Bee', which received 157 points. The 1978 contest was also broadcast throughout the Middle East, but halfway during the voting, when Israel clearly headed for the victory, all Arabic television stations ceased the broadcast, leaving millions of Arabs in ignorance as to who actually won the contest.
4. A line from a Dutch entry: 'en de trilling ging tot heel diep in mijn hart'. What song is this line from?

Answer: Rechtop In De Wind (1987)

'Rechtop In De Wind' received 83 points and a 5th position. In that same year, Italy finished third with the evergreen 'Gente Di Mare'. The absolute winner was Johnny Logan, with 'Hold Me Now'. It was the second time he won the contest.
5. Johnny Logan won the contest twice. Lys Assia and Gigliola Cinquetti came close to two victories as well, though both ladies had to settle for 1 gold and 1 silver medal. Which song did Lys Assia come second with?

Answer: Giorgio

Swiss Lys Assia won the first contest in 1956 with the French chanson 'Refrain'. In 1958 she came second with the Italian song Giorgio. Italian Gigliola Cinquetti won the contest in 1964, with the world famous 'Non Ho l'Eta'. Ten years later, she came second with the evergreen 'Si'. Both songs were sung in Italian.
'Cielo E Terra' was the Swiss entry of 1960, sung by Anita Traversi. She came 8th.
6. Which of these world famous singers won the Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Céline Dion

In 1988, Canadian Céline Dion represented Switzerland with 'Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi'. With a difference of just 1 point she won the contest with a total amount of 137 points. This victory created the base for Céline's successful career in the francophone countries of Europe. The rest of Europe re-discovered the Canadian nightingale in 1993, when she released 'The Power Of Love'.
7. Israel's Ofra Haza finished second with her powerful song 'Hi'. The lyrics were politically flavoured, with lines such as 'Alive, yes, I am alive. I learned this song from my grandfather, he taught my father it, who taught it to me. Alive, the people of Israel are still alive'. What was remarkable about this song?

Answer: It was sung in Germany.

After Germany won the 1982 contest, some people had their doubts whether or not Israel would compete in 1983. Israel did, and with only 6 points between them and the winner they nearly walked away with the victory. Together with the German song, 'Hi' received the biggest applause from the German audience. That's the healing power of music...

In 1983, countries were not yet allowed to sing in a language other than their own. The murder of Israeli Olympic athletes took place during the Olympics of 1972, 11 years before Ofra Haza took part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Ofra Haza and her backing group did not sing off-key.
