Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What British rock band followed up their rock opera "Tommy" with the 1971 album "Who's Next"?

Answer: The Who

Intended to be composed as another rock opera, "Who's Next?" became a collection of songs on The Who's fifth album and nevertheless went multi-platinum upon its release in 1973. Like "Tommy" before it, many of the "Who's Next?" tracks became iconic 1970s rock songs including "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" (both of which became the theme songs of "CSI: NY" and "CSI: Miami" respectively) as well as "Behind Blue Eyes".

The disc peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 while "Won't Get Fooled Again" was the highest-charting single; it reached number fifteen on the Hot 100. Two years later, the band followed this one up with a new rock opera, "Quadrophenia".
2. In 1976, the "Hotel California" album began "on a dark desert highway" for which band?

Answer: Eagles

A band comprised of Don Henley, Don Felder, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner, and Joe Walsh, Eagles were famous with their previous releases (which included the songs "Take It to the Limit", "Witchy Woman", and "Desperado", but none of these became as famous as "Hotel California", a song which appeared in the top fifty of "Rolling Stone's" '500 Greatest Songs Of All Time'.

The album sold millions going multi-platinum in the U.S. The disc won the Record of the Year Grammy in 1978 and the album and titular song both went to number one on their respective Billboard charts.

Their next two studio albums, "The Long Run" and "The Long Road Out of Eden" both reached number one on the Billboard 200 as well despite the fact that they were released nearly thirty years apart.
3. "Synchronicity", released in 1983, wasn't only this group's fifth album, it was their last. What band was known for this disc?

Answer: The Police

"Synchronicity" followed yearly releases of albums beginning with "Outlandos d'Amour" in 1978, "Reggatta de Blanc" in 1979, "Zenyattą Mondatta" in 1980, and "Ghost in the Machine" in 1981. Two years later, "Synchronicity" marked the final outing by The Police, a band consisting of Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland. Sting would go on to have a successful solo career though some of the most memorable songs to his and the band's name came from this disc including "Every Breath You Take" and "Synchronicity II".

It was their highest-selling album before their break-up and won three Grammys (two of which were for "Every Breath You Take", which appeared at number one on the Hot 100 in the U.S.).
4. One of the best-selling 1980s rock albums was "The Joshua Tree", the fifth album from what Irish rock band?

Answer: U2

"The Joshua Tree" was a smash hit for U2 selling millions upon millions of copies upon its release in 1987. Featuring the songs "Where the Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "With or Without You", and "Bullet the Blue Sky", the album reached number one in nine countries, achieved multi-platinum status in several others, and received diamond certification from the RIAA. "The Joshua Tree", which won two Grammy Awards in 1988, was followed up by the more intimate stylings of "Rattle and Hum".
5. "Nimrod", featuring the song "Good Riddance", was the fifth album of which band released in 1997?

Answer: Green Day

Showing up in stores in 1997, many punk rock enthusiasts believed "Nimrod" to be another stepping stone on Green Day's path to stardom. After the diamond-selling "Dookie" and the heavier "Insomniac", "Nimrod" brought Green Day to the attention of more pop-centric listeners with "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" which, although a fairly simple song, appeared on four Billboard charts and became a hit with teens. Green Day followed this disc up with the less-popular "Warning" and the mega-hits "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown". "Nimrod" reached number two on the Billboard 200 but peaked at the top of three other Billboard album charts.
6. You'd probably be feeling "Hella Good" as well if you released your fifth album. Whose fifth release, "Rock Steady" (2001), featured this song?

Answer: No Doubt

Receiving Grammy Awards for two of its tracks, "Rock Steady" received great acclaim from listeners. Its sales made it a double platinum release in the United States and it reached number nine on the Billboard 200. Although not as huge a seller as their 1995 disc, "Tragic Kingdom", it showcased major singles for the band including "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", "Underneath It All", and "Running".

After the album's release, lead vocalist Gwen Stefani would go on to release a couple of solo discs.
7. Whose 2003 eponymous fifth album featured the songs "Feeling This" and "I Miss You"?

Answer: Blink-182

Formed in 1992, Blink-182 became a popular band with 1990s teens and college-aged listeners at the turn of the century. With hits like "What's My Age Again?" and "All the Small Things", many of their most famous songs appeared in the soundtracks for movies aimed at the university experience. "Blink-182", their fifth album, was extremely popular with critics for its scaled-back approach.

Many of its singles were much lighter fare than on their previous discs; "Miss You" and "Down" in particular were down-tempo.

The disc went platinum and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. The band went on hiatus until 2011, eight years later, when they released the sixth album in their discography, "Neighbourhoods".
8. In 2005, what duo's Grammy award-winning "Get Behind Me Satan" featured "The Denial Twist" and "Blue Orchid" on its tracklist?

Answer: The White Stripes

"Get Behind Me Satan" followed the White Stripes' self-titled debut, "De Stijl", "White Blood Cells", and "Elephant" and became one of their highest-charting albums. It was followed in 2007 by a sixth and final album, "Icky Thump", before Meg and Jack White dissolved the band.

"Get Behind Me Satan" reached number three on the Billboard 200 ("Icky Thump" was the only one to beat it at number two) and went platinum in the U.S. The single "The Denial Twist" is one of the many in the band's repertoire to be accompanied by a Michel Gondry music video; this one in particular featured late night talk show host Conan O'Brien.
9. "The Resistance", released in 2009, was the fifth album of what three-piece Teignmouth-based band?

Answer: Muse

Muse released "The Resistance", the follow-up to their popular "Absolution" and "Black Holes and Revelations" discs, in 2009 to much fanfare. Containing concert area favourites such as "Uprising", "Resistance", and "Undisclosed Desires", the trio (consisting of Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard) used big rock bands like Queen to influence their new style making the transition from space rock of their earlier days to progressive rock. "The Resistance" reached number three on the Billboard 200 but it went to number one in thirteen different countries.
10. In October 2011, which UK alternative rock group released their fifth album, a concept piece called "Mylo Xyloto"?

Answer: Coldplay

A follow-up to their multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning fourth album, "Viva La Vida (or Death and All His Friends)", "Mylo Xyloto" combined the down-to-earth acoustics of their preceding release with the techno/urban-inspired instruments of "X&Y". Debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, "Mylo Xyloto" spawned the hit singles "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and "Paradise" shortly after its release in late 2011.

Coldplay's previous studio albums were "Parachutes", "A Rush of Blood to the Head", "X&Y", and "Viva La Vida (or Death and All His Friends)", all of which were either Grammy nominees or winners.
