Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Led Zeppelin, a song called "Beck's Bolero" was released as a B-side to the single "Hi Ho Silver Lining". "Beck's Bolero" was a rock song with Jeff Beck as lead guitarist. He then asked Jimmy Page to play an electric 12 string guitar on the song. Which other member of Led Zeppelin played on the song "Beck's Bolero"?

Answer: John Paul Jones

"Beck's Bolero" was an instrumental song (so if you guessed Plant you're wrong) composed of Page and Beck. Playing bass for the song was of course John Paul Jones (after John Entwistle pulled out), session man Nicky Hopkins on piano, and The Who's Keith Moon on drums. Jimmy Page once said that the lineup of "Beck's Bolero" (the bassist would be John Entwistle) would be his dream band. Well, that never happened as Entwistle and Moon were in The Who and Beck had other plans. Fortunately, Page found another dream band.

The dream band was Led Zeppelin.
2. Who was the engineer for Led Zeppelin's first album, "Led Zeppelin I"?

Answer: Glyn Johns

This is a popular album from Led Zeppelin, considering this was only their debut album! The songs off of the album include "Good Times Bad Times" (great guitar riffs from Jimmy), "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", (with the famous walking bass line) "Your Time Is Gonna Come", and "Black Mountain Side". "Communication Breakdown" starts playing and is known as the anthem for frustrated youth (Page says the guitar riff is hard to play because of the constant, quick downstroke with the pick).

The final songs on the LP are "I Can't Quit You Baby" and "How Many More Times".
3. What was the first single ever to be released by Led Zeppelin? (in the US)

Answer: Good Times Bad Times

Actually it was a combination. "Good Times Bad Times/Communication Breakdown" was the first single (in the US) released by Led Zeppelin. The band didn't like releasing singles because they thought people should listen to the whole album. But they caved in and put these two songs out because they were radio friendly in their length and structure.

It didn't do as well as expected, it only got to number 80 on the US Charts. "Trampled Underfoot" was released as a single in the US and hit number 38.

There were several pressings made of "Trampled Underfoot" to be released as a single in the UK, but they were shelved and were never released. "Celebration Day" was never released as a single. "Whole Lotta Love" however, was released in the US, and hit number four, the highest any single from Led Zeppelin got on the charts.

This song was also released in the UK in 1997 (18 years after it was written), and it hit number 21.
4. In America, "Hey Hey What Can I Do" was found on the B-Side of what song?

Answer: Immigrant Song

"Hey Hey What Can I Do" is a very rare song from Led Zeppelin to actually own. Now, the only way to get the song is to buy the Led Zeppelin Box Set. I was mad when I found this out because I really liked this song. I didn't want to spend money on the set when I have almost all of the albums. "Immigrant Song" is a short little tune that came out on "Led Zeppelin III" and was also released as a single in the US.

This song become a fan favorite and the band usually opened their live shows with the song, from 1970-72. "Immigrant Song" (the single) was mistakenly released in Japan with "Out On The Tiles" as the B-Side instead of "Hey Hey What Can I Do".

These singles are now collectables. "Tangerine" and "Since I've Been Loving You" are songs off "Led Zeppelin III".
5. In the song "Black Dog", the guitars are heavily layered. How many separate Jimmy Page guitar tracks were overdubbed?

Answer: Four

One of the best songs from "Led Zeppelin IV" and possibly ever from Led Zeppelin, "Black Dog" is a very unusual song, but it still fits well. John Paul Jones got the idea for the song from a Muddy Waters song called "Electric Mud". So he added a rolling bass part and a very complicated time signature. John Bonham ignored the time signature and just played a steady 4/4 beat (Jones thinks this is what made it work). Jones also didn't want a song people could dance to, and the clever time signature makes sure people can't groove to it (even though the lyrics "Gon' make you sweat, gon' make you groove" make no sense, but it may mean something else).

The song's name came from a nameless black dog that wandered around the studio where Zeppelin was recording "Led Zeppelin IV".

The song has nothing to do with the dog, though.
6. As we all well know, when "Stairway To Heaven" is played backwards, people claim it reveals a message supporting Satan. More people believed this theory after Jimmy Page bought a house in Scotland which was a well known Satanic church. Who lived and owned this building before Page bought it?

Answer: Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley also stated in his books that he made his followers learn to read and speak backwards. I, for one, think all this Satan stuff is stupid. Led Zeppelin are not Satan worshipers and did not make a message supporting Satan (on purpose anyway, all of this is my opinion). Plant didn't write these lyrics so they could support Satan. I think the song is about a woman who makes tons of money finding out the hard way that her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven. Anyway, "Stairway To Heaven" is an eight minute long song (8:03 to be exact) and was never released as a single. Radio stations however, didn't mind playing the lengthy tune because many people requested it (in fact, it is one of the most-played songs in the US) and wouldn't tune out because of the length. John Paul Jones didn't want a bass in the song because it sounded like a folk song.

Instead he played keyboards, strings, flutes, and the wooden recorders you hear toward the beginning of the song. Oh by the way, a great guitar solo from Page.
7. Which of the following songs mentions three places in one stanza of its lyrics?

Answer: The Song Remains The Same

"California sunlight, sweet Calcutta rain
Honolulu starbright--the song remains the same"

"The Song Remains The Same" is a great song off the "Houses Of The Holy" album. This song was going to be an instrumental before Plant put in his lyrics. I believe the band, instrumental-wise, did a fantastic job on this song. From Page's beautiful guitar work and nice little solo during the introduction of the song to Jones' great bass work to Bonham's thunderous drumming. The song's title is also the name of the Led Zeppelin movie "The Song Remains The Same" released in 1976. The movie is footage from three Madison Square Garden concerts tied in with the band acting out their "fantasies" (the band was not happy with the results). "Going To California" and "The Rover" mention one real-life place and "Royal Orleans" mentions three places, but not all in one stanza. (Sorry if I confused you with the stanzas)
8. On what song does Robert Plant want to "take you to the movies"?

Answer: Houses Of The Holy

"Let me take you to the movies
Can I take you to the show"

A nice tune off of "Physical Graffiti", "Houses Of The Holy" is also the working title of Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album. This song had many confusing lyrics that include Satan's daughter, white doves, gardens, and an angel on your shoulder. "Houses Of The Holy" was origanally going to be on the album with the same name, but Zeppelin held it off until "Physical Graffiti" (probably so they wouldn't have one of their albums named after a song on that album, this again my opinion). "Physical Graffiti" is a double album that features hits like "Trampled Underfoot", "The Waton Song", "Custard Pie", and the ultimate Led Zeppelin song "Kashmir". Once this album was released, all of the other Zeppelin albums along with "Physical Graffiti" entered the charts and they were the first band to ever have six albums on the charts at once. Nothing totally surprising for a band as good as Zeppelin.
9. "All My Love" was dedicated to Robert Plant's son, Karac, who died of a Respiritory Infection.

Answer: True

"All My Love" is a brilliant and immortal song of how Plant still keeps living after that sad day and still loves his son dearly. Let's keep away from the sadness, shall we?
"All My Love" came off of the final studio album, (before "Coda" came out) "In Through The Out Door". Some other hits coming off the album are "Hot Dog", "Carouselambra", and "Fool In The Rain". "Fool In The Rain" was released as a single (very uncommon for Zeppelin) and charted at number 21 in the US.
10. How many years was Led Zeppelin in flight? (The band, not the Airship)

Answer: Twelve

The band broke up after 12 years of creating wonderful music. Not because they were too old to rock out loud, but a sudden thing happened. On the tragic day of September 25, 1980, John Bonham was found dead in Jimmy Page's house, dying from choking on his own vomit. That day, the music world would never know a better drummer as the music world lost a man of many talents. Led Zeppelin changed the ways of rock and music in general forever. From Page's awesome guitar solos and riffs to Jones's bass grooves to Bonham's incredible and supperior drumming (he was truly a hammering god) to the unmistakable voice of Robert Plant. To "Good Times Bad Times" to "Stairway To Heaven" to the ballad of one's loss on "All My Love", truly Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest bands in the history of rock. Probably the best ever.
