With only three members, Soundgarden formed themselves in late 1984. They would not release any material until 1987 however.

"A Sound Garden", a wind-channeling pipe sculpture, was constructed in 1983 near the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle.

In 1984, Soundgarden was comprised of Chris Cornell, the lead-singer and drummer at the time, Hiro Yamamoto, the bassist, and Kim Thayil, the lead-guitarist. Soon after in 1985, they hired Scott Sundquist to allow Cornell to focus on vocals. Finally, in 1986, Sundquist left Soundgarden and Matt Cameron entered to fill in as drummer.
