E.M. Bartlett wrote "Victory in Jesus" as a way to tell his personal testimony. After graduating from college, he became a music teacher. In 1939, he wrote this song two years before his death.

In 1873, Horatio Spafford decided to take his wife and family on a trip to England. While he was delayed on business, he sent his family ahead. On November 22, 1873, the Ville du Havre sank killing his 4 daughters. Spafford's wife telegraphed her husband saying, "Saved Alone." Spafford rushed to meet his wife in England.

When they reached the point where his daughters had died, the boat captain brought him on deck. Spafford went back to his cabin and wrote the words to "It Is Well".
