Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The year was 1967 and a friend of mine was bragging about this new band's debut album and this great song called "Back Door Man", at which point I had to say "I'll let you finish, but" Howlin Wolf recorded that song first in 1961. What band was my friend bragging about?

Answer: The Doors

Willie Dixon wrote the song for Howlin Wolf and it was the B-Side of "Wang Dang Doodle" which was also written by Dixon and performed by Howlin. Ted Nugent among others have remade "Wang Dang Doodle". The song fit in well with the Doors provocative style of music.
2. The year was 1980 and my sister had just seen a movie where she said the main characters Jake and Elwood sing a great new song called "Sweet Home Chicago", which prompted me to say "I'll let you finish, but" Robert Johnson first recorded the song in 1937. What band, whose name is also the title of the movie, was my sister talking about?

Answer: The Blues Brothers

Robert Johnson is credited with writing this song, which borrows its melody and lyrics structure from some previous blues songs. It has become a popular song in the Windy City. The Blues Brothers originated on the T.V. show "Saturday Night Live" and their popularity led to a very successful movie that takes place in Chicago and "Sweet Home Chicago" is on the movie soundtrack, sung by them.
3. In 1968 an ex-roommate was having a rough period in his life and liked to lament about the connection he saw to this trio's song "Born Under a Bad Sign" and his own life. Finally I had to say "I'll let you finish, but" Albert King did this song first in 1967 and my roommate proceeded to find a stronger kinship with King's version. What trio was my ex-roommate listening to over and over again?

Answer: Cream

The cover of the Albert King record "Born Under a Bad Sign" has such superstitiously bad luck items, as dice showing snake eyes, a black cat, Friday the 13th, a skull and crossbones that looks like it belongs on a bottle of poison and an ace of spades.

The song was written by Booker T. Jones and William Bell. "Born Under a Bad Sign" was included on Cream's 1968 double album "Wheels of Fire".
4. In 1971 my co-worker was really into live music and one of her favorite songs was "Statesboro Blues", which she claimed this band did a great live version of Taj Mahal's song, so I chimed in "I'll let you finish, but" it goes back even further, to 1928 and Blind Willie McTell. What bands live version of the song from their album "At the Fillmore East" was popular with my co-worker?

Answer: The Allman Brothers

Statesboro is an area in Georgia, and while Blind Willie didn't grow up there, he grew up in Thompson, Georgia, he thought of Statesboro as his true home. Taj Mahal modernized the song for his 1968 debut album, which is what The Allman Brothers used to base their more popular version of the song off of.
5. In 2003 a pen pal of mine was visiting from Britain and telling me about a great song by this guitar legend that was released as part of a box set more than 20 years after his death called "The Things That I Used to Do", before he got too far into his explanation I had to say "I'll let you finish, but" Guitar Slim from back in 1954 is the man to credit with this song. Which left handed guitar legend was he talking about?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Guitar Slim, also known as Eddie Jones, had Ray Charles for a piano player, an arranger and producer for the song. This song was a huge hit for the Specialty Records label as not only southern U.S. stations picked up the song, but northern stations as well, which was rare at the time.

This song can be found on Disc 2 of the box set "Astro Man" that was released in 2003 and contained some rare songs by Hendrix.
6. In 1964 a kid I knew from school was fascinated with a new band and their single "Baby Please Don't Go" and how different it was from his parents' music, after a bit of listening I said "I'll let you finish, but" Big Joe Williams is the one to thank for this song, which was first recorded by him in 1935. What band, whose B-Side to that single was a little ditty called "Gloria", had fascinated my schoolmate?

Answer: Them

Baby Please Don't Go" has been a popular song to remake ever since Big Joe Williams released it. It was remade twice the year after it was originally released, by Tampa Kid and by Sam Montgomery. "Them" released the song in 1964 and it was accompanied on the B-Side by a song written by lead singer Van Morrison, which became more popular for the band and him personally called "Gloria", and "Gloria" has been remade by a few artists as well.
7. In 1977 this British band caught my cousin's attention with a live version of "Mannish Boy" that he could only describe as deeply moving, even though I didn't want to burst his bubble I said "I'll let you finish, but" Muddy Waters originated the song in 1955. Which band that was extremely influenced by Blues music added the song to their "Love You Live" offering?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Mannish Boy" was recorded in Chicago and featured bluesman Junior Wells on harmonica. This was the only song of Muddy's to crack the U.K. Singles Charts, he had more luck with the U.S. charts, with this song reaching as high as #5 on the Billboard R&B chart.

The Rolling Stones have covered other Muddy Waters tunes through the years and they owe their name to the Waters song "Rollin Stone", which former member Brian Jones christened the band with when asked what the band's name was during an interview.
8. In 1968 my then girlfriend became enamored with this band's album "Cheap Thrills" and one song in particular "Ball and Chain", while not wanting to spoil a good mood, I couldn't help myself and had to say "I'll let you finish, but" the credit begins with Big Mama Thornton. What lead singer along with her band Big Brother and the Holding Company caught my then girlfriend's attention?

Answer: Janis Joplin

Big Mama Thornton not only performed and had a hit with "Ball and Chain", which was made into a bigger hit by Janis Joplin, she was the first to record "Hound Dog", which is linked forever with Elvis Pressley. Janis Joplin first did "Ball and Chain" live in 1967 and the groups entire performance at the Monterey Pops Festival that year spring boarded the release of their first album "Cheap Thrills" the next year.
9. In 1966 my brother was a bit perplexed as to what the right spelling of a new song he liked was, was it "See See Rider" or "CC Rider", while he was explaining his preference I said "I'll let you finish, but" the original name of the song is "See See Rider Blues" by Ma Rainey from 1924, though no matter how you spell it, the song remains the same. What band fronted by Eric Burdon caused my brother to be perplexed?

Answer: The Animals

Referring to easy riders, who were cheating lovers, Ma Raineys "See See Riders Blues" told the story of one of these easy riders. The song has been covered many times and by the time the Animals covered the song in 1966 the title was shortened to "See See Rider". The version by the Grateful Dead shortens it even more to "C.C. Rider".
10. In 1999 I was thrilled to see a new song on a favorite guitarist of mines reissued album "Couldn't Stand the Weather" called "Give Me Back My Wig", then I got some of my own medicine when my wife told me "I'll let you finish, but" "Hound Dog" Taylor did the song first in 1971. Who was this guitarist who often worked with Double Trouble?

Answer: Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Hound Dog" Taylor, born Theodore Roosevelt Taylor, did not find great success in music until late in his life, with his first album "Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers" being released in 1970 when he was 55. Though his popularity was short lived and he only recorded two more albums, one released posthumously in 1975, he knew success and was a big inspiration to a young George Thorogood.

The reissue of "Couldn't Stand the Weather" added "Give Me Back My Wig" as well as "Look at Little Sister", "Come on Part III" and "SRV Speaks" to the original release.
