Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From 1978 to 1999, Van Halen has had how many lead singers?

Answer: 4

From 1978 to 1985, David Lee Roth was the lead singer. From 1985 to 1995, Sammy Hager was the lead singer. In 1996, Eddie Van Halen invited singer Mitch Malloy to join the band. He was officially the lead singer of Van Halen during 1996, though no songs have ever surfaced with him singing.

The band did, however, record demos with Mitch Malloy, which Malloy purportedly still has copies of. Then David Lee Roth appeared with Van Halen in the 1996 MTV Awards and Malloy resigned from the band. Ultimately, the band chose Gary Cherone as their fourth lead singer. Cherone departed from the band in 1999.
2. The band recorded a song entitled "That's Why I Love You", an unreleased track that was slotted to appear on a certain album. However, the band pulled the song, replacing the track with a longer song at the last minute. Name the album.

Answer: Van Halen III

Though the debate which frontman is better can never be definitively settled, there are some hard sales facts that prove both singers proved quite popular. Between Sammy or Dave (no one ever mentions Cherone, can't imagine why), Sammy took the boys all the way to number one in the album charts in 1986 with "5150", a sentimental favorite for myself.
3. Can you name the album which featured a cover by The Kinks and a song written by Milton Alger and Jack Yellen?

Answer: Diver Down

"Diver Down" includes the second Kinks cover the band recorded (the first being "You Really Got Me" from their debut). Milton Ager and Jack Yellon wrote "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)", the eleventh track on "Diver Down".
4. "Voodoo Queen" is an unreleased early version of which song?

Answer: Mean Streets

"Voodoo Queen" has the same music as "Mean Streets" but completely different lyrics. "Mean Streets" is the opening song to the 1981 album "Fair Warning". "Voodoo Queen" is circulating among collector circles.
5. 1984 is Van Halen's last studio album before Sammy Hager joined the band. This album is notable having reached diamond status, which denotes the album has sold more than ten million copies. What other original (non greatest-hits) album also has diamond status?

Answer: Van Halen

Appropriately enough, Diamond Dave gave Van Halen two diamond discs, a very hard feat to pull off in the music business.
6. Ted Templeton, Van Halen's producer for seven studio albums, makes a vocal contribution to which album?

Answer: Fair Warning

Ted's the one who says "Come on, Dave, give me a break", to which Roth responds "One break, coming up!" in the song "Unchained".
7. "Crossing Over" is a B-side, and appears as the last song on some international versions of which album?

Answer: Balance

Hagar wrote the song "Crossing Over" about death. It is the only non-LP B-side the band has released during the 1980s and 1990s.
8. Nicolette Larson supplied (uncredited) female vocals to a Roth era song. Ms. Larson is the only woman who has supplied female backing vocals to a Van Halen recording. Name the song.

Answer: Could This Be Magic

At the time, Larson was recording a solo album in the same studio. Ted Templeton brought her in for the sessions. She contributed the only female vocals ever to grace an officially released Van Halen song.
9. A studio bootleg version of an early unreleased song, "Woman in Love", leaked to the public in 1999. What album contains a nearly identically titled song?

Answer: Van Halen II

"Van Halen II" has a song about lesbians called "Women in Love". "Woman in Love" predates "Women in Love", and bears no similarity other than the title to the officially released song.
10. Which Van Halen recording features Eddie "playing" the strings of a grand piano by hitting the strings with knives, forks, D-cell batteries, ping pong balls and other various objects?

Answer: Strung Out

Eddie originally recorded this "song" in 1983, twelve years before it was officially released.
