Question 5 of 10
5. Bob recorded the title cut to the poorly received film "Band of the Hand". For my money, "Band of the Hand" is one of his better songs from the 1980s and would have greatly strengthened the Dylan album that came out the same year as the movie and song "Band of the Hand". What's the album? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Some of Dylan's line notes are quite humourous. What album has the note that "This album could have been produced by Don DeVito"? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Over the years, "The Bootleg Series" has had some stunning revelations. One such revelation is the opening line to the closing song of "Love and Theft", "Sugar Baby", was taken from an early version of an entirely different song that appeared on one of Dylan's earlier albums. What is the name of the record? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Dylan over the years is famous for leaving great songs unreleased. One such song, in my book anyway, is the outtake "To Fall In Love With You", recorded in 1987 for the "Hearts of Fire" outtake. The song sounds more like a sketch than a finished track, much like "I'm Not There", but there's something mystical about it. Anyway, Dylan also recorded an alternate version of the song "Had a Dream About You Baby" for the soundtrack. Dylan released that song, albeit using a different take, on one of his studio albums. What is the album? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Bob has released two versions of the great song "I'll Keep It With Mine", a mid 1960s classic that was never released during that decade. The first version is a finished studio recording, the second a studio rehearsal take in which one of the producers actually speaks on the recording about twenty seconds in. What Dylan released featured the finished studio version? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. During what album session was the outtake "I'm Not There" recorded? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What album featured the song "When Did You Leave Heaven"?

Answer: Down in the Groove

The song was written by Walter Bullock and Richard Whiting. Bob released the "Down in the Groove" album in 1988, and it was assembled from a hodgepodge of different recording sessions. The album, like its predecessor "Knocked Out Loaded", was critically damned.
2. A lot of Bob's song have religious connotations, including this simple one, "Father of Night", that almost functions as a prayer. What is the name of the album?

Answer: New Morning

"New Morning" is often considered a comeback album, coming out a few months after the trainwreck that is "Self-Portrait". However, if you go by recording sessions, "New Morning" was already completed and ready for release when "Self-Portrait" came out in 1970.
3. Dylan originally recorded the song called "Clean Cut Kid" for a prior album. The song didn't make the final cut, and appeared on what later album?

Answer: Empire Burlesque

Dylan recorded the song for the 1983 release "Infidels". However the song went unreleased (like so many other songs from that album) The song appeared in 1985 on Dylan's next album, "Empire Burlesque".
4. One of Bob's singles sported the B-Side "Let It Be Me". What's the album the single was drawn from?

Answer: Shot of Love

Bob professionally recorded and released "Let It Be Me" twice. The first time was on "Self-Portrait" in 1970. Then, in 1981, he recorded the song a second time for "Shot of Love". Other than the single release, with the A-Side of "Heart of Mine", the song had never been released on any Dylan album or compilation.
5. Bob recorded the title cut to the poorly received film "Band of the Hand". For my money, "Band of the Hand" is one of his better songs from the 1980s and would have greatly strengthened the Dylan album that came out the same year as the movie and song "Band of the Hand". What's the album?

Answer: Knocked Out Loaded

"Band of the Hand" is a protest song in line with "Clean Cut Kid" and "Neighborhood Bully". Sonically it sound similar to "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Alter". The song, like the songs from the "Hearts of Fire" soundtrack ("Night After Night", the soundtrack version of "Had a Dream About You Baby", and the John Hiatt cover "The Usual") are not on any mainstream Dylan release.
6. Some of Dylan's line notes are quite humourous. What album has the note that "This album could have been produced by Don DeVito"?

Answer: Street-Legal

The 1978 mix of "Street-Legal" is notoriously bad among fans. In 1999, DeVito actually remastered and remixed the entire album.
7. Over the years, "The Bootleg Series" has had some stunning revelations. One such revelation is the opening line to the closing song of "Love and Theft", "Sugar Baby", was taken from an early version of an entirely different song that appeared on one of Dylan's earlier albums. What is the name of the record?

Answer: Time Out of Mind

The line is "My back to the sun because the light is too intense". Originally the line appeared in Dylan's riveting original version of the "Time Out of Mind" song "Can't Wait". Daniel Lanois of U2 fame and producer to "Time Out of Mind" originally wanted this recording on the album, but Dylan vetoed him and went with a different take.

Answer: Down in the Groove

Dylan recorded several takes of "Had a Dream About You Baby". He also recorded the songs "Old Five and Dimer", John Hiatt's "The Usual", and "Ride This Train". Dylan also recorded "A Couple More Years", which is about a minute and a half long. That recording appears in the movie but not on the soundtrack.

Answer: Biograph

Dylan wrote "Ill Keep It With Mine" in June of 1964. The song was first officially heard via a cover version from Nico's album "Chelsea Girls". The song has been covered by numerous artists, including the Fairport Convention, Spooky Tooth lead singer Mike Harrison, and even Courtney Love. It has long been one of my personal favorites, and pretty much a lost 1960s classic.
10. During what album session was the outtake "I'm Not There" recorded?

Answer: Not recorded during any album sessions

Although "The Basement Tapes" are rather famous, they were never intended for commercial release and do not constitute "album sessions". A collection of basement recordings were released in 1975. "I'm Not There" would not be released officially until 2007.
