Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Idnetify the Steinman song:

Answer: Both of these songs were written by Steinman

"Left In The Dark" was originally to be released on the sequel to "Bat Out Of Hell". However, Meat was unable to record the album and Steinman recorded the album "Bad For Good" himself, including this song. The song was later recorded by Barbara Streisand, and was eventually recorded by Meat, himself.

It was one of only two Steinman songs on Meat Loaf's "Welcome To The Neighborhood" album.
2. Did Jim Steinman write the Meat Loaf song "For Crying Out Loud"?

Answer: Yes

This song appeared on the "Bat Out Of Hell" album. Although Jim wrote the song, Meat has his own take on what the song is about. According to an on-line chat session he took part in, Meat says that to him the woman in the song is not leaving, she is dead. I do not know if this was what Steinman had in mind, but listening to the song from that perspective is a chilling experience indeed.
3. Which Meat Loaf song was written by Steinman?

Answer: Out Of The Frying Pan (And Into the Fire)

If you said both, you're close. Both songs were written by Steinman. However, "Making Love" was originally an Air Supply song, and was never recorded by Meat Loaf.
4. Which, of the following Jim Steinman songs, does Meat Loaf NOT perform lead vocals on, even though they appear on his album?

Answer: Both

"Back Into Hell" is an instrumental track. "Wasted Youth" is the intro track to "Everything Louder Than Everything Else", and is listed and performed live as a seperate song. Jim Steinman actually does the lead vocals himself on "Wasted Youth".

PLEASE DON'T SEND A CORRECTION IF: You are absolutely certain the song which repeats the phrase "A wasted youth is better by far than a wise and productive old age", is actually performed by Meat Loaf. You are right. However, the title of that song is the aforementioned "Everything Louder Than Everything Else", which follows the "Wasted Youth" track.
5. Did Jim Steinman actually say "Meat Loaf sings like me"?

Answer: Yes

Many people thought Jim was trying to sing like Meat when he recorded the intended sequel to "Bat Out Of Hell", "Bad For Good". However, he was pointing out that, even though Meat has a far superior voice, Steinman demonstrates how he wants Meat to perform.

In that sense he lays the foundation, so to speak, that Meat builds on. So, Steinman contends, on the songs that Jim writes, Meat actually sings like him.
6. How many Jim Steinman songs appear on the Meat Loaf album "Couldn't Have Said It Better"?

Answer: none

Great album. Some nice imitation of the Steinman irony on some of the tracks. No Steinman songs on this one though.
7. Steinman is known for writing songs that are extremely long.

Answer: True

"Paradise by The Dashboard Light" runs over 8 minutes (Edited down from well over 20); "Making Love" was well over 4 minutes after an extensive edit by Air Supply; "I'd Do Anything For Love" was so long they had to edit out some of the best lyrics to get a radio version; Don't listen to "Objects In The Rearview Mirror" unless you have aroung 11 1/2 minutes to spare.

Steinman songs are also known throughout the industry for their (sometimes dark) irony. Witness the lyric: "I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you; Don't be sad, 'cause two out of three ain't bad."

Many labels also refused to consider the "Bat" demo because of Steinman's consistent refusal to follow what is called the ABC format of rock 'n' roll: Verse, Bridge, Chorus. A Steinman song may have multiple choruses and the format can be, at times, indecipherable. "Paradise" is a classic example of this.
8. When Meat first auditioned for Steinman he sang "I'd Love To Be As Heavy As Jesus". According to Meat Loaf, what was Steinman's first response to this?

Answer: I think you're as heavy as two Jesuses, as a matter of fact

Meat Loaf references this on the "VH1 Storytellers" live album that resulted from his appearance on the show.
9. Complete this absolutely classic Steinman lyric: "On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to..."

Answer: The wolf with the red roses?

Any true Meat fan probably found that one a little too easy. It had to be included though. Rolling Stone Magazine once called the intro to "Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" "...the coolest 30 seconds in the history of rock 'n' roll." (Even though the intro lasts much longer than 30 seconds).
10. Which of these lyrics was written by Steinman?

Answer: All of them

For you non-Meat Heads, all of these lyrics are from the timeless classic "Paradise By The Dashboard Light".
11. Of Meat Loaf's first nine studio albums (from "Stoney and Meat Loaf" to "Couldn't Have Said It Better"), how many contain NO Steinman songs?

Answer: Four of them, almost half!

They are:
"Stoney And Meat Loaf"
"Midnight At The Lost And Found"
"Blind Before I Stop"
"Couldn't Have Said It Better"

Albums WITH Steinman songs:
"Bat Out Of Hell"
"Dead Ringer"
"Bad Attitude"
"Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell"
"Welcome To The Neighborhood"
12. Which song is this lyric from? "I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday"

Answer: Both

This lyric made an appearance on both "Bat" albums. On "Paradise" in 1977, and again in 1993 on "Wasted Youth".
13. Which of these Is NOT a Steinman song?

Answer: I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)

"I'd Lie For You" is a nice immitation of the Steinman/Meat Loaf irony. However, Steinman didn't write this one.
14. Which is the correct lyric from "More Than You Deserve"?

Answer: All of them

Poor guy. In each verse the situation gets progressively worse.
15. In the video for "More Than You Deserve", the waitress serves what to the patrons?

Answer: Pie

A very funny, very obvious, over-the-top, Steinmanesque metaphor. (I do not know how much Steinman had to do with the actual production of this video, but the video is definitely worthy of the song.)
