"Top of the Pops" was originally only commissioned for 6 episodes, but it was so popular that it ran on a weekly basis for over 42 years. The final show was broadcast on 30th July 2006. The first show was hosted by the Disc Jockey Jimmy Saville, and the first act to appear was The Rolling Stones singing "I Wanna Be Your Man".

Prior to September 1967, the British Broadcasting Corporation only had three regular radio stations. These were: the Light programme, the Home Service and the Third Programme. There was no one station specifically dedicated to current popular music at this time. Following the demise of the pirate radio stations, and at the British Government's request, the British Broadcasting Corporation revamped all their radio stations and included a new station which would play the popular music of the day. Thus Radio 1 was born.

Prior to the Hot 100 chart being launched in 1958, Billboard had published initially three charts tracking the ranking of the most popular singles. These were Best Sellers In Stores, the Most Played By Jockeys and thirdly, Most Played By Jukeboxes. A fourth category was added in during 1955 which was named The Top 100.

These separate charts were replaced on 4th August 1958 by one main chart covering all genres, known as the Hot 100. The Best Sellers In Store continued to be published until 13th October, 1958.
5. 1985 saw the first live pop music performance in communist China given by a western group. Which group achieved this accolade?

Answer: Wham!

The group "Wham!" was George Michael and Andrew Ridgley with band and backing singers Pepsi and Shirley. In April 1985 they performed in the "People's Gymnasium" in Beijing to an audience of 15,000 as well as members of the Chinese Government, press and TV crews from around the world. It had taken the group's manager,
Simon-Napier-Bell, 18 months to obtain the permission required for the event to take place.

The first induction dinner was held in New York at the Walfdorf Astoria hotel in January 1986 and the inductees were all male. The following year, 1987, saw Aretha Franklin inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame as the first Female act.

Since 1956, The Eurovision Song Contest has been broadcast each year without fail. In 1956 only seven countries were represented which were: Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, France and Germany. In 2010, it's 55th year, thirty-nine countries participated. The venue for this show was Norway and Germany won the contest.

Rolling Stone magazine was named after the Muddy Waters song of the same name. The magazine was founded by Jann Wenner in 1967, and was located in San Francisco. The magazine was originally published wholly in black and white.
